Tickets on sale 31 March 2008.
Accordingly to strictlyreading, rumoured bands are Metallica (practically confirmed), Green Day, The Editors, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, The Killers, Rage Against the Machine, NOFX, Slipknot, Los Campesinos! & The Subways (among others).
If two thirds of those are true, count me in.

Could have got some cheap vip Leeds tickets a few weeks ago. But it meant queuing up early on a Sunday morning in the pouring rain and the 99% likely line up of Metalica/Rage/Killers headlining meant that staying in bed was a better option and i'll let some one who'll actually enjoy themself's go.

The only thing confirmed are that the 3 mainstage headliners are American. The first 20 or so bands for Leeds are announced at a party in Leeds, then they go up on all the websites. Then the other 100 or so bands get announced in dribs and drabs.
I'm definitely going just because I always go but the missus wants to camp this year as she thinks we missed out by not doing this last year. Not sure how I feel about that.

I had a similar discussion with some friends before the V97 festival. They were insistent that camping was the best way to enjoy the festival whereas I opted to travel out each day. At the end of the weekend they looked awful, smelled bad and were utterly knackered. Give me the comfort of my own bed any day.
Nathan-Wind

I agree but she has never camped at a British festival before and heard lots of stories about good it was from people that did. At the risk of sounding like a total ****** these stories came from people in the guest area and she only wants to camp if we get guest tickets.
That's not proper camping at a festival. You get proper bogs and even showers I think.

Camping at a Reading/Leeds festival is brilliant....

I disagree...
Love camping, chilling out with your mates after the music has finished.
Meeting new people and drinking and talking crap for hours is great.
No alcho-pops though... just lots of crates of beer and jagermeister.
Couldn't fo reading/leeds.. Did Phoenix way back when and that was a similar beast. :gag: Shall only do Glasto nowadays as it's not as age specific..
Got my tickets on the pre-sale last year too, really hoping for RATM...please, please, please!!
The Prodigy would be nice too, they seem to be playing just about every other festival in the land.

I went camping at Leeds last year and had a great time. Didn't have any trouble at all and was able to just chill after the live music and chat with mates and our neighbours from other tents. The music tents can get a bit annoying if you actually want sleep though as they run until about 3 in the morning.
However on the last night, there was a lot of fires and explosions going round as people started burning their tents :| That was the only time I didn't feel entirely safe and we decided to stay up all night and catch the earliest bus out of there
Last year, Tangerine Fields had their own area with all pre-made tents and extra facilities which might be better for you? Still a camping experience but be warned, their area last year was about 30 mins walk from the main arena. Might be annoying coming back late at night.
Nathan-Wind
11-03-2008, 16:32
If we camp it will be in the guest area which last year was just off the main arena. You don't even have to go through security to get to and from the bands. Last year we knew quite a few of the bands that played so if they were camping they were in there. I still want to go home each night but she wants to camp with our mates.
Mr Majestik
11-03-2008, 16:45
The last few years i've been to Leeds i've pitched a tent in the guest area simply to use as a beer tent\cloak room\ meeting place. They don't check your bags, so i didn't have to waste my money on the beer in the arena.
Plus the toilets are 1000X nicer than the ones the masses have to use.

Feel sorry for the people who get the wrong campsite at Reading, as you have to get a boat across the river to it.

It happens all the time. If you're bored, you chant it and see how many people get it. It's quite impressive to watch it spread from your tent all the way over to the other areas

A word of warning to anyone buying tickets.
The standard weekend tickets will only allow you entrance to the site from Friday morning . If you want to get in there on Thursday you have to fork out an extra tenner for an early entry ticket which will allow you in to the campsitefrom 6pm on Thursday evening.

I've seen a leaked line-up now as has GregB and if correct it's the worst line-up i've ever seen. I'm now trying to get out of going. Luckily the missus doesn't want to go either though we have friends flying in for it. So they are the issue.

There seems to be some confusion over this and the official site does mention this but it seems to be an error. From the info on the official site "A number of Early Arrivals passes will soon be available to be purchased. These will allow your early admission to site at 1400 on Wednesday, instead of Thursday."

The Killers? Kinda got boring about, ooh, two years ago. Rage? Kinda got boring a fair few years before they quite rightly decided to split up ages ago. (I'd especially fear for them going on after QOTSA.) Metallica? Well, compared to the other two I suppose they almost feel like a worthy headliner in 2008. I do hope the new (inevitably not very good) album won't be out and terrorising the setlist in time for Reading, though.

pub? ;) It's a music festival or are you making excuses because there's some awful headlining acts?
I won't bother at all with the main stage on Sun (Leeds) but really chuffed that the Manics are on the second stage. I did hear a rumour that the Gutter Twins were headlining the third stage the same day but I really hope it isn't true as I'd hate to have to choose between them.
A little gutted Machine Head haven't been announced but overall plenty for me to enjoy over the weekend.
So whats the likelihood of them releasing more tickets? I really like the line up, and feel gutted at missing out.

they always do but i can't remember the exact timeframe. they always sell a few thousand on the first day as well i think
Last year they released another batch shortly after everything had sold out. Same price as the regular weekend tickets but the earliest you were allowed in was Friday morning. Though I don't know if they ever managed to enforce that rule and were actively turning away those who arrived early, but I have my doubts.

I doubt it'll change from last year which was:
You can go anywhere although the closer you leave it to the start of the festival, the less places you'll have. An early entry permit is the single best thing you'll buy for the festival. You'll be able to go almost anywhere on Wednesday and can also learn your way around before the crowds start coming in.
The areas are really a personal preference as to what you want. At Leeds, I prefer Blue mainly as it's easy to get to and from the main arena and there are toilets near which for me aren't really an issue if you're far enough away. They're not exactly on your doorstop. It's really something you should research on the official forums once you've worked out what you want (ie entertainment at night, or sleep?)
Tangerine Fields would no doubt be a lot less stress and have the added bonus of more toilets, showers etc. However you will find that they are about a half hour walk from the arena. Not the kind of thing I'd wanna be doing at 11pm at night if you've had a bit to drink during the day. But again it's personal preference whether you wanna slum it with the commoners ;)
Cheers for all that info. Just looking at a map of reading, there seems to be a river in the way of the tangerine field (and the white family field) -i imagine this could casue a problem in the dark! Or the light come to think of it.

Anything that's not level ground causes problems in the dark! Come to think of it, that's not even that safe with all the guy ropes from the tents literally everywhere. One of the best investments I made was a tiny pocket torch (got a cheap LED from Tescos last year which doubled as a keyring) so that you could carry it around all the time during the day without it causing any fuss :)

How difficult is it? I ask because I've not been to a festival of this size before - been to Download a few times and 2 UK Ozzfests but I think this is bigger than those?

It just depends on the crowd but the Carling weekend should be no harder to get down the front than Download. I've often found Leeds to be less crushed than Donington.
The introduction of the seconday barrier (do they have it at reading like leeds?) makes it quite strange, it often looks packed but work your way inside towards the middle and it's often quite roomy.

I think i've managed to get a ticket...but have a few questions if an experienced Readinger has time please:
1) Due to work I can't get there until quite late Friday (5pm-ish), how will this affect my camping? (Theres a possibility someone can take my tent and pitch that tomorrow, but not 100% atm)
2) Parking...don't have a parking ticket with the ticket so how easy is it to park?
3) I need to go into London on the Sunday for about 5 hours (12-5pm), thats no problem is it? Leaving the camp site, taking the car etc? (It was fine at Download when my mate had to do something similar).
Thanks
Bad news for Slipknot fans...
To Our Fans:
It is with huge regret and disappointment that we have been forced to cancel our imminent European festival appearances at Leeds, Reading, 2 Days a Week, Area 4, as well as exclusive performances for MTV Europe and Virgin TV. The other night, Joey Jordison broke his ankle and doctors have advised Joey to stay off his leg for 4-6 weeks to prevent further injury or permanent and more serious damage.
We know you will be hugely disappointed and so are we. Canceling shows is never an easy decision and we apologize to all our fans, friends and family for not being there to throw down with you. We will be back in Europe this November and can't wait to see you all then.
Stay (sic),
Slipknot
Oh ****in great :mad::mad::mad:
I'm guessing their December tour will sell out even faster now (Machine Head & Children of Bodom supporting), tickets on sale 27th Aug.
[edit]
well at least I can now watch Pendulum, I'm guessing the tent will be even more packed now.

Another update for those going to Leeds. It rained so much last night that it's flooded some of the roads round East Leeds and this morning it was traffic HELL.
So be prepared for a long wait in a traffic jam.

It looks correct compared to my Leeds times. So i'd guess it is.
Cheers bud - enjoy Leeds.
We got into leeds at 8.30 and didn't get into the car park until 1.30 and that was taking a shortcut. The general campsite isn't too bad but the fair village and Picadilli are just a swamp. Heading down there now to see if it's better this morning.

Did anyone else just hear Biffy Clyro on Radio 1, whoever thought that was a good idea obviously needs their head tested!
For those that didn't hear it, Jo Whiley was interviewing them on the 'Introducing' stage in front of a live audience and invited them to do a cover (as she usually does). They chose to do 'Killing In The Name' by Rage Against The Machine.
As soon as it came on I said to my colleague that they're never going to get away with this - sure enough when they got to the chorus the band sung "Whoo hooo, I won't do what you tell me" whereas the audience sang the proper "**** You, I won't do what you tell me" at full voice which came across as clear as anything on the radio :notworthy
Class that, heard they were coming on but had to go back to work. LOL

Leeds feedback for one dayers: The campsite is muddy but inside the arena it's ok.
Great day but getting to the arena was on fun due to the mud. M.S.I were not as good live as they are on record but still enjoyable. The Music and Pendulum were both superb. Tenacious D were great entertainment and Metallica as always were excellent

Why couldn't the BBC broadcast Rage Against The Machine last night? Edith Bowman said it was "out of their hands".
Not that I'm particularly bothered about seeing them, just confused me.
Same as T in the Park, apparently RATM won't let anyone film their performance and show it live. Either political, making a point or will have a DVD out soon for everyone to buy

How royally ****** off would you be to come back to your car, after a long weekend, and find it a burnt out shell.
Rage didn't disappoint and it was great to finaly get to see kthem live. Biffy were probably the best of the other bands i say. Started the day by seeing Henry Rollins who steamed through an hour long set. It's only the second time i've seen one his spoken word gigs and it was an amusing rant against his own country

agree with above, Biffy felt like a proper festival band amoung a lot of mediocrity. Rage were excellent.

Highlights on BBC interactive through the week.
I just read that Avenged Sevenfold have pulled out of Reading today due to "vocal strain" of the lead singer.
That was a new low for a Reading mainstage line-up yesterday. Editors looked bored, the members of Bloc Party who bothered to turn up looked bored and The Killers looked like it was the last place on Earth they wanted to be.

Just watching The Music's set on BBC3 interactive.
Tis awesome, very energetic performance
Another good day yesterday despite the downpour during the night making the journey to arena another wonderful experience. The Subways were ok but the sound on the main stage in certain places is abysmal and unless you're near the front I found it wasn't loud enough. I then stood outside the NME tent watching the Ting Tings waiting to go in to see Seasick Steve and they weren't that bad in fairness. Seasick Steve however was awesome and it was a pure joy to watch.
I then headed back to the main stage for The Raconteurs and was surprised how quiet the front section was, it was still enjoyable but a poor atmosphere. Then I witnessed Thrice ripping up the Lock Up stage which was great before making my way all the way back to the NME tent. I was surprised by the room at the back of the front section in the tent as I expected to either stand near the back or outside. BFMV were very good although I'm not really a fan but the crowd certainly enjoyed it.
If if it wasn't packed out for BFMV it was even worse for the Manics, There was loads of room inside the front part so I managed to get quite near the front. The only thing wrong with the Manics was the short set time. However it was still superb and crowd down the front really got into it making for a great atmosphere. I've no idea what it was like further back. It was also a decent setlist and nice to see "Of Walking Abortion" live.
As we left the arena there were a couple of huge fires in blue camp with some massive gas canister explosions going off. I've no idea if things got worse and I felt sorry for anyone camping in blue having to go back to their tent especially if their tents were near those fires. We had already decided to pack up Sunday morning so all we had to do was make our way back to the car and head straight home which proved to be a good idea as we left the site easily with no hold ups.

You'd think they'd have masses of security in camping to do something about the fires. What is up with people doing that anyway? I mean, even burning out cars

The main stage sound in Leeds was terrible, the worst i've seen it. I had a good time at the festival but the line-up proved to be as weak as it looked on paper. There weren't many musical highlights. I was very surprised how small the crowd was for the Manics. It was easily the smallest for the three Radio 1 tent headliners.
My guess is a lot of people who would have watched the Manics also liked The Killers as well. I know a few of our group went to see them as they had seen the Manics before. I enjoyed it though as it felt like a small gig down the front.

Leeds actually encourage fires, they had a big metal shed selling campire wood and firelighters and for the first few days this works well with loads of small campires. Our group had one on Saturday night and it can be nice when it gets colder late on. Sadly on Sunday the place goes mental and it's a shame they couldn't put that energy to better use when the bands are on :(.
I don't really like Leeds and only go for the bands, I just feel it isn't as friendly as Download, too many chavs maybe? In some ways Download seems more rowdy. I hardly saw a bottle thrown all weekend at Leeds yet the whole vibe is still nicer at Donington. We camped in Brown in a group of 5 tents and the 6 man one got robbed while we all slept, one lad lost £100 and another £180
Had a great weekend at Reading. The music (not the band) was great all the way through, saw lots of bands I didn't know before that I enjoyed, and some i'm not a big fan of that were really good. Pendulum were the highlight for me. Feet aching now and my god having a shower at home feels nice! Henry Rollins comedy was pretty funny too.
Why on earth did Mindless Self indulgence get moved up the bill? I know bands cancelled, but that doesnt explain why they should be moved up a few places? getting everyone to fart at the same time - does the singer kno how many potential fans they lost with all his stupid comments? Lots of boos around where I was standing anyway (and I thought their music wasnt bad)
Is a shame about the people who act like morons - walking around and throwing a half full cup of peer as far as they can in no particular direction, wrecking other people's tent's and so on. It's always nice to think that people into rock and indie music are more chilled out and intelligent/nicer than the average chav, but it's def not always the case.

Gutted - I read somewhere that Rage opted out of being filmed for TV. Or asked not to be broadcast.
Was really looking forward to watching them back.
I loved the whole weekend, saw a lot of bands i knew very little about, but was not disappointed by any of them. The Manics ruled, and I am glad I missed the Killers for them, after hearing how much the sound sucked and from what my mates said they didnt even really put their back into performing.
Gutted though cos i wanted one of the Biffy Clyro Tshirts from the Merch stall, the brown one with the beard and sunglasses but I was too late and they only had small left, which was just that bit too small for me. Can't seem to find it on line either...aboo

Good weekend in general at Leeds - shame about the mud underfoot but it only really rained twice apart from that which aint bad for a UK festival.
Metallica were once again just outstanding, Bloc Party were also fabulous, and RATM were excellent but i'm getting just a little bit bored of their shtick to be honest (we thought it was quite amusing that judging by the age of most people there a majority of fans will have been too young to have seen RATM before so would have used their **** for toothpaste just for a chance to hear them play).
Among the rest - really enjoyed Henry Rollins ("what's your life!!") and Michael Macintyre, Seasick Steve was as good as ever, The Ting Tings were a little underwhelming while The Fratellis were just bloody awful. Saw the Gallows on Sunday night which was extremely entertaining, especially when they decided to destroy their amps and hand them out to the audience.....
My first time at Leeds and while the festival itself didn't seem terribly well arranged (traffic queues, no stewards anywhere in sight - especially in the Brown Field, water running out all over the place, oh and yes the sound on the main stage did leave a lot to be desired) the bands certainly made it worthwhile.

I went to Reading and as a festival I thought it was pants, basically because of everything that Bish mentioned for Leeds. Download is a much friendlier place. Tenacious D & Metallica were amazing and made all the **** we went through to actually get there well worth it. All weekend we were saying "I'd love to hear '...And Justice For All'...but there's no way they're going to play it." We were wrong :D

Both Leeds and Reading have always sold camp fire wood. Always been amazed that campsite as never burn't down given the closeness of all the tents.

I never noticed the firewood shed back in 2005 so thought it was a new thing. Ironically you could blame those who decide to leave early to avoid the trouble as it is the space they leave that is used to build the big fires. There was one huge one in Blue as we left and I pity anyone nearby who wanted to retrieve their tent. Some of the explosions were huge and it would have been pretty hairy trying to get your stuff. There were a few videos on youtube but these have now been removed.
As much as I enjoyed the weekend so many things annoyed me, the flags were one and due to the low sound volume if you weren't near the front of the main stage all you could hear were people chatting. Also on the right of the main stage you had sound conflicts with fair rides and the dance / lock up tent. Overall I thought the general organisation was poor, in fact it seemed less organised than 2005.

I don't see a problem with campfires, you are camping after all but why do people get destructive?
I'm beyond the age to camp now and will only go to festivals and stay off site but Reading/Leeds just don't interest me due to the high chav element.

Then I wouldn't go anywhere near T in the Park.....:cuckoo: Didn't notice too mad an element there until the last night really, although we were camped in the Brown field because we didn't arrive until about 10pm on Thursday and couldn't be bothered walking any further. There was a definite sense of "holy **** this could really kick off" on the walk home Sunday night.
In retrospect the whole festival was pretty shoddily arranged - but as we kept saying we were there for the bands and not the festival (as opposed to Glastonbury, for example). Campfires in the right hands are absolutely fine - at Glasto you can have fires everywhere and i've never seen that kind of mental behaviour there. The firewood is free there, too.
I went, got drunk, had 4 decent night's sleep, had nothing stolen, didn't get too wet or muddy, got a little sunburnt, and saw some great bands. That's a result, in my book.
no stewards anywhere in sight - especially in the Brown Field
I was sat on top of that sodding tower next to the toilets for 12 hours a day ;)

Good work fella.
but Reading/Leeds just don't interest me due to the high chav element.
Whilst you're bound to get bad behaviour when there are so many young people in one area (and not just chavs by any means), I think Reading has a pretty good and friendly vibe most of the time. Spoke to lots of random strangers and have been going for quite a few years with a largish group of friends and have never had any problems.
I had a top weekend - saw pretty much all the bands I wanted to see, got nicely inebriated in the sunshine and had a great laugh. Personal highlights music wise were probably RATM, Seasick Steve, Vampire Weekend and The Killers (my missus is a massive fan so her enthusiasm rubbed off on me).
I think the main improvement I would like to the Reading site is for them to move the tents about a bit - the area where the R1 and Lock Up/Dance tents are is just too crowded. Move all the foodstalls more into the middle or something.

I also thought that the organisation was worse than ever this year. Although there were more 'glass collectors' walking round than before. They bloody confiscated our hot dogs container!
We set off at 5pm Thursday from Sheffield, and we got stuck in the mother of all traffic jams, finally got our tent up at 2am Friday morning. God knows who organised to point all the traffic into one direction but it worked a treat:thumbs::mad: Never remember it taking more than 2-3 hrs in previous years.
RAGE were awesome, really enjoyed that set. Morello was amazing! Really enjoyed Pendulum's set, so much energy and atmosphere from that tent.
Tempted to buy some tickets now via see for next year, ended up paying a premium via eBay for this years festival.

To be slighly fair to them. The main road to the site did flood after the mother of all rain storms. That combined with everyone getting their early Thurs caused total grid lock.
That said if you go up two more junctions on the Motorway you can be on site in about 5 minutes. ;)

Although there is no right turn onto the site from that direction, saying that there are plenty of places along the road you could turn round assuming someone lets you in of course.
