This was a bit of a surprise. Available in a number of formats ranging from free (9 tracks only) to $300  from http://http://ghosts.nin.com/ (http://ghosts.nin.com/).

Not downloaded it yet I'm trying to decide which version I'd like best.

He kept this under his belt didn't he?

The online store is creaking along, even at 6am.

Sure is slow... haven't managed to get the paid version, so will have to settle for the free Ghosts I until tonight.

It looks like he's also put the free version out officially (and legally) as a torrent, so you'll be able to grab it that way.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm very tempted by the $75 edition tbh. Why do more bands not embrace the internet like he does and use it to get their stuff out there quickly and immediately?

Hmm, $49.99 shipping for that version, I think I'll go with the standard download option for the time being. Although I can't seem to complete a purchase just now, server must be getting hammered.

I'm going for the $5 version and seriously thinking about the $300 set (get those liths framed), though I expect they've all gone now.

Trent has really got his marketing head on good & proper hasn't he.

the site must be hit so hard at the moment, I'm not getting any confirmation emails through for downloading ($10 CD set) .

Apparently there is an error in the code which will be rectified when the programmers plane lands (and I assume they can do something about it).

Thinking about the $75 set now :)

Just got the freebie version, listening now. So far I think it's very very good indeed so I'll be searching for the credit card for the $75 version later.

Well done Trent!

I've just calculated the customs charges for both sets and it looks like for the ltd edition you will pay an extra £46 and for the $75 set and extra £21 on top of the postage etc . That is assuming it attracts a Royal mail clearance fee.

for an extra $35 per item surcharge I'd expect it upgraded to international courier :)

i ordered the $5 dollar version but it only downloaded 64kb!
the main page of sites does say that they are aware of problems and that the download links should be usable again later

am looking forward to this
although it is musically a differnt direction one thing for sure trent knows how to write a good tune!

Pulled the 9 track version down from a torrent, as the main ghosts site is running slowly.
I'll wait a while and buy the full version when the load drops on the main site.

Hmmm. I've listened to Ghosts I and it's... okay. It's very samey and there's only so many times (already, on extant NIN albums) I can hear that Rhodes piano tinkling whilst some random bit of static is warped in the background and a drum machine goes thump.

You could just listen to the Quake soundtrack instead.

Finally managed to get the delux edition, did baulk at the postage, but my other half is giong to buy it for my birthday, so not bothered now. Now if only I can get the FLAC download to work I'd be happy as a (hey) pig piggy pig pig pig in ****.

Also, damn you Trent. I'd decided there was no way I'd buy into the BlueRay format... until this come along. Ah well.

Me too. Managed to pay for it all ok and after i select what format i want i get the 'This is a one time download only link' which i click and get 32kb a sec, if i'm lucky, only for it to stop after a minute.

Can't get it back up an running now.

This could get frustrating.

To the peeps that have all four (if any), is there a change in tone between albums, or are they all sort of the same as I? I've read a few comments that IV has some of the beefier tracks.

Yeah, and considering they've got my money now, I'm highly tempted to get the hooky version of the full thing which is floating around.

A lesson for Trent in how not to do this kind of release for the future methinks. :(

So i make that just under £12 all in to ship to the UK.

How would this be described? Interested in hearing this, but if it is all industrial gubbins, I'll give it a miss.

I love the music on the track called closer? (i think, the one where he wants to like an animal)

Cheers Bobby. I think I'll just go with the $5 version then. I suspect that the small profit their end will be about the same anyway.

I got the $5 download version. I'm liking it so far, certainly moreso than Year Zero. This sounds more like Nine Inch Nails. Parts of it are reminding me of the tracks from the wonderful Still album that got a limited relesae.

I like the way each song has an image to go with it that appears as the album art in my player.
I love Trent's release methods of late, although I did have problems downloading.

Jimmyboy

Before I sample this can anyone say if there's anything remotely progressive about it?

I've been bored by pretty much everything since The Fragile because of Trent's refusal to accept that it isn't 1994 any more and the kids who dressed like Brandon Lee in The Crow all shaved their hair off 10 years ago. It's kind of odd how stagmented the NIN sound has become considering it was so pioneering in it days.

Why not according to the FAQ it says "Ghosts I-IV is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license".

I wonder how much it will be when released over here on CD?

Because I'd really like the FLAC version (which is the one I've paid for) rather than the MP3 one, and it seems you can only get the alternative formats from nin, the Amazon one is MP3 only.

And if you've seen the file that accompanies the free torrent he asks people not to nick it.. pwetty please.

But considering the complete cock-up over the server situation, yea, I guess he won't mind where people get it so long as they stick some money in the bucket if they like it (and it's only a couple of quid so not the end of the world, really).

The PDF booklet is really rather nice though...

It may be a discussion for another thread but was the Nine Inch Nails really that pioneering? It took Industrial music in to the mainstream but wasn't really anything particularly groundbreaking.

I don't know... Trent Reznor has the wonderful ability to write melodic pop songs, and then disguise them as something heavier. If you strip away the noise and distortion then you have music that could easily be played on commercial radio and make the pop charts. I'm not sure if many other industrial metal artists take that route.

Anyway, '13 Ghosts II' is currently my favourite track, it's gorgeous.

I agree with that and I do love NIN but he just took a sound that was well established and polished it up a bit. Nothing wrong with that at all, I'm just not sure whther it was that pioneering.

The tunes i don't mind but his lyrics do have a very bad tendency to sound like a spoilt brat who can't get what he wants rather than a tortured soul that he aspires too.

At times yes, but seeing him perform Hurt live was just :notworthy

I managed to pull the 5$ version down in just over an hour using a download manager. The last 10mb or so took forever though.

Not had a listen yet, but now tempted to go for the 75$ version. Just because... ;)

My previously broken download flew down this morning and so far I'm enjoying it. Its got some really lovely stuff and for £2.50 or so, its a great package with each track having its own artwork, a PDF booklet and a collection of wallpapers.

Am tempted by the $75 version. I wonder if the Blu Ray would be region free???

Wonder if really expensive megasets are gonna take off on a wider scale? Not sure there are any current artists who could get me to part with that kinda money and it'd be a shame if the only way you could get vinyl was as part of this kinda setup.

ascender
04-03-2008, 15:56
I suppose it depends on how much effort they put in to them. If there's a really nice set of stuff, they'll always find a section of their fanbase who will pay good money for them. And the thing is with Trent that he does put nice packages together. I mean look at the way even the $5 download for this new music has a nice set of extras with it.

But then I'm sure we've all bought limited edition stuff from bands before which has been disappointing, I know I have. So maybe the changing market where artists can sell directly to their fans much easier than ever before will be a good thing in more ways than one.

I honestly don't know if I'll bother with this at all.

I didn't buy Year Zero. I have a few versions of With Teeth (DualDisc etc.) but I think it's terrible.

I feel NIN have done nothing of worth since The Fragile.

Mind, 5 bucks for a download...

If you liked The Fragile you'll probably like this. It feels a lot less adolescent, in a way, then With Teeth and Year Zero. Maybe that's not the right word.

Like you say, for $5 it's well worth a go.

Hmmm, talk about going from one extreme to another ... Year Zero was tuneless noise & this is tuneful dullness.

I'll stick with the Year Zero remix album, as it was happily in the middle.

davidjameslevy

I can't remember which one it is, but I have the one with Ghosts I-IV. Anyway, I think its gorgeous. I really hope more artists do things like this, as I am happy to not have the physical media, and would be far more likely to support a band I had a passing interest in by buying something for $5 than I ever would buying a £10 CD.

And the mega sets are amazing - I just wish there was some way to stop the profiteering like we're seeing on ebay.

Probably not fair to comment as I've only heard Ghosts I but there's not much in the way of any tunes. Yes there's some nice sounds but I was left wanting more, most of the songs I've heard sound like song intros that don't really go anywhere. Saying that when I heard it was instrumental I didn't really expect any more than a soundtrack.
