Looking to replace a broken USB drive I found these (http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=142556)- they seem very cheap indeed.

Has anyone ever bought these to comment on the quality? They're about two/three times cheaper as most other USB sticks I've found elsewhere.

First thing i notice is that the keyring loop is on the cap and not on the body.
After losing my first USB key due to this, i'll never buy one that is that way around again! I can cope with losing the cap...
On the other hand, a bargain if you don't care!

Ouch, hadn't noticed how much their postage is.

Still, I'm going to buy two so £23.96 for those - just under £12 each for 4Gb sounds pretty good.

Also vader, I don't generally use straps with these things. They will mainly be used to store Divxs and for watching on my 360. ta

I assume the write speed etc are up to scratch?

Slightly cheaper at Play (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=2&url=http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3335634/Play-com-4GB-USB-Flash-Drive/Product.html)

Not sure about the quality, as I only use it to watch avi files through a DVD player, but it seems to work fine and dandy for that. There's an 8 gig one there too, for slightly more.

Although this one (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=2&url=http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3348406/SanDisk-4GB-Cruzer-Micro-USB-Flash-Drive-Ready-Boost-Enabled/Product.html) is £12.99 it's Sandisk branded, Readyboost enabled and seems better value for money. I've had one for just over a week and it's great. Even better, there's no cap to lose as the USB connector is retractable....

Both the 4 and 8 gig versions from Play work very, very well. Never had a problem with either of the ones I own.

Oh thanks - saw that the other day but I discounted it on the grounds that it was designed by Stevie Wonder :)

I'll eventually be buying a PS3 so a more understated simple black design would look better plugged in - maybe I'm just a design snob at heart.

Now I'm spoilt for choice! Not sure how the read/write speeds compare but this one is rubberised, shock proof and water resistant. I was set on having two to swap over so the write speed didn't really mater but now ....:?:

Oh the perils of living in a capitalist society. Too much choice.

Heh I called Play.com to check what speed the 8Gb reads & writes at and after a lengthy hold the nice lady told me it was 480 Mb a second!

Does that sound a tad high to anyone else?

Roberto

No sounds about right for USB 2.0. (I think)

EDIT - No it's 480 Mbps so she's got the wrong end of the stick, this works out to about 60 MB/sec, which is still great in my opinion, will get one come pay day

For anyone who runs Vista.

The Cruzer Micro doesn't support U3 features in Vista, and SanDisk haven't released any drivers to address the issue yet. Thought it was worth knowing if you were going for this on the basis of U3.

Sounds like she is just stating it is USB 2.0 rather than the actual speed. I haven't come across a USB 2.0 drive that works at the full 480Mbps.

has anyone come across a stick with a read-only slider on it ? used to see them a while back, but not spotted one for ages now (unless it's an unlisted feature ?)

I have had virus problems on friends' PC's, and really need the RO option.

does it work on Vista though? My current 1gb Sandisk Titanium is pre-Vista and isn't even recognised.

I was going to buy the 8gb Cruzer micro at £24.99 but noticed it didnt say readyboost enabled whereas the 4gb did so went for that; £2 off voucher as well so £10.99 delivered.
Excellent - as long as works on my laptop!

It works to a degree. You can't securely unplug the drive (with u3 stuff installed), but if you uninstall the u3 stuff via an application on sandisk's website then it works fine - just no point buying it for u3 functionality.

got it and suprisingly even the U3 functions work out of the box on Vista.
It is an EXTREMELY cheap/flimsy feeling device though.
Worlds away from the Titanium and even less robust that freeby usb drives I have:oh-hum:

how does the 'ready boost' work? do you have to set it? and can you have any files on the drive?

riz1
09-03-2008, 19:52
when you plug the device in Vista asks if you want to use it to speed up the system and then you assign the portion of the volume for readyboost and the rest will be available for normal file-carriage.
