Why are more and more albums being released in poxy cardboard sleeves that start to rip when you get the CD out and force you to handle the playing side of the disc? Recent albums I've bought that are guilty include Arcade Fire's Neon Bible (and Funeral before that), Springsteen's Magic, Radiohead's In Rainbows and today I found that Sheryl Crow's Detours to be the latest. Thankfully in this day and age I rarely touch my albums more than once after I've ripped them to my PC, but it still does my bloody head in.
I think it's all about Eco-friendly. I know what you mean though - I went to buy Sheryl Crows new one yesterday to find it in the shop in that it was cardboard. Decided not to buy it hoping that they'll release a proper jewel case soon. This current "fad" of all the Eco-stuff these days is really starting to annoy me :(
Surely Radiohead's album opens out like a flower and there's just a slipcase inside that's not the sort to rip?

The Radiohead one won't rip, but still annoying that it's not in a proper jewel case. Actually, you've prompted me to look at the package again and I've only just noticed that it comes with front and back cover stickers for a jewel case. Does mean that's it's less Eco-friendly and more about money saving in this instance?

I prefer them to fragile jewel cases.
If cardboard was good enough for LPs it's good enough for CDs.

I think it's just so you have the choice.
It's the cardboard sleeves that *really* tightly hold the disc in that peeve me - you have to sort of bend them slightly to relinquish their grip enough to loosen the disc...
Tsk.
The Japanese do the best cardboard sleeves:

Apart from the sleeve being bigger, the CD comes in a polybag or, in the best ones, a woven cotton inner
Yeah, I'm in the middle of replacing all my Queen CDs with the Jap Mini LP remasters and they look fantastic. Shame you need a microscope to read the lyrics though...

Does anyone else have the Foo Fighters 'In Your Honor' Dualdisc version. It's really nicely packaged, but consists of a cardboard slipcase, surrounding a 4-section digipack, which then has separate tight-fitting cardboard sleeves tucked under a flap at each end, inside which you can find the discs.
It's like a little Krypton Factor challenge everytime you want to hear the album.

Best album packaging ever was "Quality But Hers" by Dustball

Tis ace packaging!!

Definitely. Drop a jewel case once on a hard surface and its all over. Awful things, more cardboard/digipacks the better.

If cardboard was good enough for LPs it's good enough for CDs.I'd probably agree if most of the sleeves weren't so tight fighting. I must admit, jewel cases are annoying too nowadays, the teeth on the part that holds the disc in place break too easily, and quite a few have that annoying ridge thing on the inside of the front to stop the booklet coming out which make you bend it to get to it.

I always appreciated the Pink Floyd remasters where they only held the CD booklet at the back end to make removal easy.
