View Full Version : Beatles covers, and good compilations?
After seeing Across the Universe this week I'm interested in listening to more Beatles stuff but I'm not actually that keen on their own sound. Are there any good compilations out there of Beatles covers?
I think The Grey Album (if you can find it, mixed by Danger Mouse) is pretty good (it's a mash-up of The White Album by The Beatles and The Black Album by Jay-Z.)
the I am sam soundtrack is pretty good too

Fiona Apple's "Across The Universe" is well worth checking out although I don't think it's on any compilations.

Motown meets the Beatles (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001A7Q/thedvdforums-21)
Nice one (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007SMD3M/thedvdforums-21)
But I don't get the not liking the Beatles own sound thing.

This got me into the Beatles when I was a kid. Loved the whole thing but found the sound of the snippet of 'Nowhere Man' intriguing and wanted to hear more.
And in addition to the aforementioned 'I Am Sam' OST, George Martin: In My Life (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000006H7G/thedvdforums-21) is quite interesting. The standout track being Goldie Hawn's 'Hard Days Night' but I also like Connery's vocal of the title track as I love the lyrics of the original for personal reasons.
I like this cover of Eleanor Rigby but you can't beat the original.

Jimi Hendrix does a good cover of Day Tripper on his BBC sessions cd. Don't know of any whole albums though.
Don't get the no liking the Beatles sound. They are my all time favourite band!
Well actually, an ex used to flip out when I put their music on....that was scary!
Cheers for that rozzer. It was great!!
Instant Karma 2002, A Tribute To John Lennon (http://www.discogs.com/release/579428) is worth a listen. Bit difficult to get hold of though.
Has a nice version of "In My Life" by Roddy Frame.
I REALLY don't understand this don't like the original sound thing.
There is not a Beatle's cover that is a patch on the originals.
If you liked Across The Universe, then surely the soundtrack album would be the starting point??????
After that George Martin's In my Life is the ONLY compilation album I would even consider (the Jeff Beck cover of A Day In The Life is actually in Across The Universe).
As for The Beatles, do yourself a favour and get the blue album. Then the Red album. Or maybe Love, which is stunning.
Thanks for all the tips. Have got the ATU soundtrack and playing it to death. Also listened to a lot of Beatles this weekend. As for the sound? Just a taste thing really, I just like to production and arrangement of the covers more.
Steve Earle's version of I'm Looking Through You is probably my fave Beatles cover at the moment.

Husker Du's Ticket To Ride. Awesome.
Edit: Just remembered that when I saw Tenacious D (of all people) a few years ago, they did a brilliant version of the medley from Abbey Road - You Never Give Me Your Money through to The End. It was really lovely.
The Ray Charles versions of Yesterday & Eleanor Rigby dick on the originals in my book.
