I was just wondering what the story with these are. I found my first one via this forum with an album called "A Night at the Hip-Hopera" and I have just come across another Radiohead one which is absolutely stonking.

The thing about these albums is they sound so damned professional. How are they made? They certainly seem to be using the original masters, but I assume these are not exactly with the artists permission so how exactly are they done? I have only heard two but they are both stonking.

Nope, that's just a reggae version of OK Computer. There's a sort of "bootleg"/mash-up/hip-hop take on In Rainbows. Not sure what it's called (tho I remember it being reviewed in Observer Music Monthly). You can apparently get it for free if you bought In Rainbows...

I did. :p

I'm not sure how the people you download this bootleg from know if you bought In Rainbows, though...

This particular one I am talking about is called Me and This Army. It is mainly Kid A / Amnesiac / HTTT tracks with samples from all over the place even going back as far as The bends. It is really really good. One of the tracks seem to have the involvement of De La Soul I think.

DJ Panzah Zandahz's "Me and This Army" is a collection of 16 Radiohead tracks remixed with snippets of artists such as MF Doom, Jurassic 5, De La Soul, and more. It's as if the white label gods planted sensors inside my brain; they heard my innermost mashup prayers, and answered them here. It's delicious. Now all it needs is some remixed Stanley Donwood cover art...
Link to info, tracklisting, and torrent. (Thanks, Sevaan)

I haven't heard it but that was a bit easy to find out ;)

The kings of the mash up are 2 many DJ's..

There is a long(ish) thread about mash-ups/bootlegs around here somewhere

My favourite one is Smells like Booty - Bootylicious mixed with Smells Like Teen Spirit. Either of the originals sound boring to me now compared to the mash-up.

No idea how they do it. Clever Pro Tools trickery I assume, unless there is an underground master track leaking circle

Usually just a keen ear for similar speed tracks and a pair of turntables..

I disagree that 2 many DJ's are the best. I think that GirlTalk, despite the iffy name, is far more 'listenable'. To my ears anyway.

You can do this sort of thing using Ableton Live. Also Audtion lets you extract/remove vocals from tracks which you can then mess about with.

From the description above it sound svery much like a RHead equivalent of Dean Gray Amrican Idiot mashup which I really enjoyed at the time. Will check this out when I get home

Acid by Sony is usually the tool of choice.

The "home" of them is GYBO. Google it ... and I hope I am allowed to mention it. They no longer explicitly link to any MP3s any more as I think they got a cease and desist. These are definitely not done with the permission of the artists involved so they are illegal - even if they are not (usually) old on.

Go Home Productions, Team 9, ccc and Soundhog are my personal favourites as far as "producers" go, and what they manage to do with the raw material available can be incredible.

For me the best I've heard are: The Kleptones www.kleptones.com

and the makers of the OPs Hip-Opera: Flying White Dots www.flyingwhitedots.com

The 24 hours two disc set by the Kleptones is awesome and Into The Great Unknown by the Flying White Dots is also highly recommended.

It contains, if you're interested, much more of the 'little fluffy clouds' interview with Ricky Lee Jones used so memorably by The Orb
