OK so I saw the first Evil Dead on Friday night (but let's not get into the ordering of the book of the dead ;)), and I watched the second one (of which I have the Ltd Edition tin set) last night and I loved them both. But, I really need help on Army of Darkness
Looking at rewind I count 5 versions of it:
The universal version (which I am avoiding like the plague)
The original Theatrical Cut version
The Ltd Edition 2 Disc Director's cut version
The Director's Cut version
And the Bootleg DC version
Now, I was originally gonna try and get a copy of the 2 Disc Ltd Ed from Ebay, but heaven knows how expensive it could end up and how long it would take. So I'm looking at rewind tonight and I notice that the extras on the ltd ed are also the same as the seperate releases
So now I've decided to get the seperate versions.
Fine for the theatrical release, but (and here's where I finally reach the question) between the DC and the Bootleg DC, which is it?
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Ok, the limited edition Directors cut is the exact same DVD as the Bootleg Cut, they just released the Bootleg cut due to demand for the directors cut of the film.

I have both versions and I must say I never watch the Theatrical cut as it is butchered and a lot of Ashes character is lost save the money get something else .......
The bootleg although the quality is poor in the re-added scenes is the way to go
I assure you, you will watch the making of on the Theatrical cut once or twice and the trailer but the actual film is terrible 15 mins have been cut from it ....although if you are a completist you will want both ...
oh and for even more fun the bootleg cut has some minor cuts that are intact in the u.k vhs version of Army
The rights with the evil dead films are a mess
im still emailing all and sundry about within the woods in a futile attempt to get it added to the dvd
I've just checked Rewind -- Is there any Region 2 edition? :( cam't find one... (even without portuguese subtitles)...
cheers

Well, I'd argue that while the theatrical cut is missing a lot of great stuff, it's not THAT bad. Actually, after viewing it a couple of times, the DC kinda dragged for me, and repeated itself quite a bit. Anyway, the picture quality on the theatrical cut disc is superb, as is the 5.1 soundtrack. If you must have the DC (which you must, if only for the commentary), try to get the original single-disc release with the cool cover. But don't expect big things in the picture dept...some of the shots represent the worst quality I've seen on the format, but that's only due to the dodgy source material.
Hopefully this will be definitve, but my understanding is of the (three) versions available (just labelled differently) :
1st disc of original LE = Anchor Bay THX
2nd disc of original LE = Director's LE = Bootleg DC
Universal disc
It is quite literally that.
There are plenty of reviews of both versions of the Anchor Bay versions available that note the picture and sound 'deficiencies' on the DC, but it is well worth getting (if not for the deleted scenes, then the commentary alone ! :)).
edited - meant to say, I'm not aware of any R2 version, but there certainly isn't one in the UK (although if Anchor Bay follow what they did with Halloween, who knows ! ).

Ok
When Evil Ash has sheila in his possesion you actually see how her dress gets ripped up and it makes it all look a bit more sordid, the battle scene has a few extra shots and there are a few more little bits thrown in
I may make the definitive cut of Army just to see what it would be like
