View Full Version : BBFC certify Angel widescreen
Adam over at the R2 project forum has just pointed out this interesting link....

It would therefore appear that we ARE getting Angel in widescreen, as it should have been from the start.
All well and good, but I'll still be holding out for S1 from the US.

You'll be holding out for quite a while then.
That link is for a season 2 episode btw. If you're going to hold out for that particular episode to show up on DVD in R1, then be prepared for an even longer wait.
Season 2 of Angel will be in anamorphic widescreen when it's released in R2 in the spring.
All we need are DD 5.1 remixes for both Angel and Buffy just like The Simpsons received!
Solidus,
I'm well aware that Angel isn't likely to appear on US R1 for another 2 and a half years, but I'd rather wait in the hope of getting it in the proper format than immediately settle for Fox UK's first offering.

I too are going to wait for the R1 version of Angel, I have waited to get Buffy from R1 and now I have it.

2 and half years is that confirmed and what differences will there be betweeen region 1 and 2
Hi Lorne, ;)
No release dates or details for Angel R1 have been announced. However, the show has to be either cancelled or sold into syndication before DVDs can be released.
Syndication usually requires 100 episodes. Each season of Angel is 22, so the show needs to complete 5 seasons to reach this target. We're currently mid-way through season 3, so that's only 2 and a bit years to go.
There's absolutely no guarantee that the R1 version of the S1 DVD won't be any different to the R2. However, it seems pretty clear that the season exists in widescreen (as evidenced, would you believe, by widescreen clips included in the UK 4:3 full screen box-set.) Also, the S1 release of Buffy in the US contained bonus features not present on the UK version.
With Angel currently being BROADCAST in widescreen in the US, the hope is that within the 2 and a bit years Fox will prepare a new widescreen version (with Fox US chief Peter Staddon committing to support the format for all TV material where available).
2 and bit years may seem quite a way off, but at that point we'll only be reaching Buffy season five on US DVD, plus you'll still have new seasons of Angel to keep you entertained in the meantime, while seasons 2 onwards will be released in widescreen on DVD in the UK.
Personally, I'd rather wait the 2 and a bit years for one lone season, rather than face the possibility of having to spend another 70 pounds to get it in the preferred aspect ratio.

This looks a good a place as any.
From which series of Buffy did Angel spin off from??
I've only just got into Buffy from the R1 DVD and i'm slowly making my way through each series, should hopefully get S2 soon. So at what point does Angel come into it's own?, is it the end of Buffy S3??
I'm even confusing myself, hopefully you get the jist of what i'm asking.:)
Angel S1 was designed to link exactly with Buffy S4 - Joss Whedon's idea was that you watch the first ep of Buffy, then the first of Angel, and so on throughout the season. It was a great idea to get Angel established and, of course, it is now deserving of it's own credit as a standalone series.
There were some excellent cross-over storylines too....
Matt.
Excellent, thanks mjb, just the info i was after.
Looks like i'll have to save up and get Angel when Buffy S4 is out.

Indeed. There was a wickedly clever moment in the season openers of S4 Buffy & S1 Angel where...

Buffy has moved to her college dorm & returns home to collect something. She answers the phone but there`s no one there.
An hour later, you`re watching Angel. He`s feeling lost & lonely i n L.A. He calls Buffy, but when she picks up, he can`t speak.

Is the region 4 of Angel Season 2 in WS too ?
I can't see them going to the bother of producing two different sets of disks...

It's listed on the R4 sites as widescreen format.
As to two different sets of discs, Fox did this for the UK and European/Australasian editions of Buffy Season 3 so guess they could if they wanted to.

Hooray! Widescreen at last. Now, let's hope that they don't cut the "previously" re-caps at the beggining of episodes this time.
So does this crossover thing happen with Buffy S5 and Angel S2??

As far as my poor old brain can remember there is a lot less story crossover interaction.
Unless of course :
When Willow turns up in that last seconds of the last Angel story. She doesn't actually say anything but the bad news about Buffy is implied.
Don't know if anyone's seen the new DVD Times report about Australia R4 not getting Angel in widescreen, but here's even more enlightening news from R2-DVD.org....
"It appears I missed an important paragraph in last weeks "Angel" announcement:
Following the monstrous success of Angel Season 1 DVD, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment have responded to the overwhelming demand for this amazing 6 disc set to be in widescreen. The UK will be the only country offering this release in the widescreen format and with a mouth watering array of special features this is a boxset you can really delve into.
Garth over at Australian site Dark Horizons has confirmed with Fox in Australia that the R4 version will be Pan & Scan. Apparently the same goes for all other releases. So now you know.
"
So, it looks like all our campaigning wasn't in vain (take note all ye naysayers), but you've got to feel for the R4 crowd, many of whom also signed onto the petition.
Also, I can't see this "UK widescreen exclusive" going over to well with the Americans, with Angel currently being broadcast in 16x9 on US terrestrial TV.

Can I just say WOW! That’s amazing that UKR2 is getting this exclusively, but I hope it doesn’t mean for sure that R1 season 1 will also be pan & scan.
Yah-boo-sucks to all the people who said that it was pointless to protest and that full frame was preferable. Betcha feel pretty stupid now?
So is there kind of release date for the re-release fo Angle Season One WS? I am so glad I held off buying the 4:3 release now [pats one self on back]:)

Alan, unless I’m mistaken Desk’s post refers to season 2. Much as I’d like Fox to re-release season 1 in widescreen I can’t see it happening yet, if ever.
Re-reading the excerpt above though it is mis-leading taken out of context.
Oh poop:( Cheers Jonathon for the correction. I read the bit about season one and assummed they were re-releasing it in WS with new extras.
Here is the link about it at R2 Project:

Most of the crossovers are when Spike tells Buffy how he killed the 2 slayers. In Angel when they go on about Angels' past with Darla, Spike and Dru are in those scenes.
Ok.. so what to do??
I did have Buffy seasons 1 - 4 on order from Aus so they would be uncut, and I would sell my R2 seasons 1 - 3. If I am now going to have to get Angel Season 2 in the UK will it be cut??
If it is then I see no real reason to sell my current Buffy DVDs to replace with uncut ones when Angel will be cut anyway.
Does anyone know what the situation is on cuts to Angel Season 2?
Angel S1 R2 was totally uncut and was released with an 18 cert so expect the same with S2
Damn! Best cancel my R4 order soon then. Wanted the Amarays though :( But would much rather have widescreen.
I take it DVD.co.uk is the cheapest place to get this now (£59.99)?

Cool, thats good to know. Anyone know about Buffy Season 4??
Is Buffy Season 4 def in widescreen, R2 + R4? Has it been confirmed at all?
It was reported over at dvdtimes that the Buffy Season 4 R2 had been confirmed as WS. And yes, dvd.co.uk are the cheapest for Angel and Buffy for now at £59.99 delivered.
Buffy is usually a 15 certificate on R2 and there have been small cuts in past season boxsets but I can't see there being anything to cut from Season 4. Plus cuts are hardly noticable, well for me anyway.

Is Region 4 widescreen though? Ezydvd lists it as such, but didn't they have Angel as w/s up until recently too?
No listing on that Fox page mentioned earlier.
Cheers.
damn it, this is typical, looks like i'll be cancelling my R4 Angel from DVDCrave, now all my sets will look different, ARG!!
I wasn't bothered about the P&S season 1 as it's the only release availiable at the moment, but to release widescreen in one place and not in another seems point less and unfair. Can FOX never get it right?
I read somewhere on the net that angel S1 will probalbly almost certain NOT be shown in widescreen on a R1 dvd set. I didn't really understand the full details of the interview (done with a fox person by the BBC) and i can find it on the net now.
Well anyway she said something like the master copy only exsits as 4:3 and it would be unlikely for a too be changed into widescreen for a dvd.
