OK, maybe someone who has a copy of the R1 Toy Story: The Ultimate Toy Box could answer these questions for me about the first disc:

(a) does your copy have a slight glitch, where everything goes slightly pixellated for a couple of frames right at the beginning of chapter 3 (just before Woody sits up)? Considering the rest of the movie is so well compressed this just surprised me, as it's the single most noticable piece of shoddy compression in my collection.

(b) does your copy have slightly harsh dialogue when the actors are SHOUTING? The rest of the DD track sounds fine to my (admittedly sensitive) ear, including effects in the centre channel. It's just the dialogue which tends to have a slight distortion when it gets LOUD. As it's not the entire track which exhibits this problem, I believe this is not just isolated to my copy. However, worth finding out, eh?

Cheers!

Never noticed these problems on my R1 copy.

Maybe I shouldn't have called them problems 'per se', but areas I have always found slightly lacking compared to, say, Disc 2 of the set, which is both visually and aurally perfect IMHO. Now, maybe you didn't notice the glitch, but do you think you could check it out for me? It's only two frames, so you have to look carefully if viewing on a small monitor. It looks like a badly compressed JPEG picture file or something, with blockiness around everything. Also, you may not have noticed the sound depending on your setup, I guess. The reason I decided to post this was that I just shelled out for Mission's best centre speaker and some new cables, and the dialogue still sounds too harsh compared to all my other titles.

Haven't noticed it but will check it out for you.

One bit I always notice as seeming odd is when just before Woody plunges his head in Sid's bowl of cheerios, his movements (very fast) look broken up and not at all smooth like the rest of the film. It's rather like the effect you get on video with very fast motion - often seen in motorcycle racing where they place a camera right in the apex of a bend and the bikes race past very close. Anyone else seen this?

Yes. It is extremely noticeable on my PC screen. I assume this is what you are referring to:

There are a couple of other places it happens too, though I forget exactly where.

I noticed something similar at the end, when Buzz says "This isn't flying -- it's falling with style". (Hope that wasn't a spoiler!) Crackles a bit. I also remember it from my old VHS copy, so I assume it's part of the original recording.

Thanks Whiggles, you just answered my questions perfectly. You know, I've been kinda suspicious of this disc since I first got it over a year ago, and now I know that I'm not going crazy :D
