No real difference in the machines except for the Region compatability on the Blu-ray drive for films. You don't even need a stepdown transformer - just a cheapo kettle lead to play a US machine.

If you feel that Region A films (USA) are for you then go for a US machine, otherwise, PAL as it will have an easier to deal with warranty should the worst happen.

Personally, I went for a US machine (80 gig) because it cost me less than the the UK 60 gig machine (£320 + Motorstorm delivered).

thanks ono,are there any issues with online gaming? region coding for films is no problem for me.

No, no issues with online gaming.

You can actually set up different accounts for each region (I have one for UK, USA and JPN) to access the various online stores which is useful.

Also, if you intend to use the PS3 for DVD playback it is locked to that region.

That is why i was thinking of a us ps3, i am getting rid of my 360 with hd dvd drive.i have just bought a tosh hd dvd player and need a region 1 player as i have a lot of us dvd's.
so seems like a good idea to get a us ps3, i was worried that i would have problems with online gaming, as this is not a problem, looks like i will be going us.
where did you source yours from ono?

Some games were region locked. I think RFOM was, but they sorted that out eventually. Tends to be down to the game and not your ps3 or your PSN ID.

Videogamesplus - but I think they have run out of the 80gig ones.

They should get them in pretty quickly, never seem to go for long without having them instock.

The servers used to be split online for Resistance (Motorstorm still is last time I looked) and that was patched so everyone could play together but the game was never region locked afaik. In fact that only thing that I can remember being region locked was the PSN demo of Uncharted which was a mistake and quickly rectified. Nothing I can turn up suggests any games were region locked at any point.

And another vote here for Videogames+ btw, know a few people who ordered through them and have yet to hear anything negative. Good luck. :)

I was talking about online play. The question from c4lln was about online play. You can check his post if you're unsure. Seems you took my post out of context.

Apologies, I always take the term "region locked" to mean the traditional region coding that we're used to, it wasn't clear because I would normally quote to reply to a specific post.

Still, it's all information that will help I'm sure. :)

It was the post after OP's so didn't feel the need to quote. Apology accepted, everyone makes mistakes.

More a misunderstanding in this particular case I think, I tend to read posts in isolation but relative to the first/original post if nothing is quoted. Old forum habit I'm afraid. ;)

Trying to find a comprehensive list of games that are region specific for the online component but not having much luck. :(

Of the games I own Motorstorm (EU version) lets us access the EU Universe and NZ/Australia Universe, obviously excluding the US. Unreal Tournament 3 would appear to be global, Resistance is global ofc, Warhawk is global, Tekken 5 DR Online seems to be EU specific (although I've not fully explored the online side of it as yet, I might be wrong, other regions may be selectable), FIFA 2008 is global. Will have another look at Tekken tonight and double check and then update this post, it might be worthwhile having a list of these exceptions for reference. COD4 is almost certainly global as well.

COD4 US version had a patch a few weeks ago that hasn't been rolled out to other regions. So if you have a US copy of COD4 and the patch then you're stuck with the Americans for now.

Also remember the PS3 will be region locked for regular DVD's as well.

I decided to get a UK machine as I did not want any hassle with returns etc. Also If you want more HDD space its pretty easy to swap another 2.5" drive or plug one into a USB port.
