The first three seasons were filmed in 16mm and had grainy Dvd transfers.
The fourth was filmed in 35mm and had a great transfer,so why is 16mm so ropey and why do companies use it ?

16mm basically less than half the resolution of 35mm

16mm tends to suffer from a grainy affect because of this, especially with dark scenes. Buffy Season 1 and 2 is a good example of this, as they were also shot on 16mm then season 3 was 35mm.

New series have much smaller budgets than an established tv show. 16mm is a lot cheaper to use (cheaper film and cameras).

When it comes to broadcasting on tv most tv companies filter out small details this makes grain from 16mm less apparant but reduces the quality of the picture (softer, less detail).

With DVD the companies don't filter the picture because of the degrading affect it would have.

Cheers chris, i hope that sometime in the future they might have the technology to improve the transfer of 16mm prints, or just stop using it would be better!
