I have bought a Toshiba EP-35 HD DVD player, so far after 1 month, I am very happy with the way this player has worked, I have updated it's firmware to the latest version. I do have one problem with this player, I play a lot of standard DVD's on it, as it upscales them , and it does, in general bring a new lease of life to your existing DVD's, but I thought standard DVD layer changes was a thing of the past, I have owned cheep DVD players that have not had this problem, so was surprised to see it back. So far I have watched about 25 standard DVDs on this unit and it has only played two, with out the layer change being noticeable.
I don't know if this is common to HD DVD players when playing standard DVDs, or has anybody else experienced this problem with this player ?

It's not HD DVD related. Cheap DVD player often have DVD ROM drives in them which has a internal buffer. Most other players have their own which do not have a buffer.

Thought I'd bump this as I've just watched a HD DVD on my EP30 and the layer change was horrible (paused for a second, then stuttered with no sound when the disc resumed). Is it disc dependent? Or do the Toshiba HD DVD players struggle with them. Standard DVD layer changes are about as good as theywere on my old Denon player.

Apparently there are no layer changes on HD DVD/Blu-Ray, so my (and likely your) disc problem must have been caused by dust. I believe they're more sensitive to specks of dust than regular DVD's.

Disc freezes and stutters seem more common with the EP30 and 35 models. The earlier generation machines don't seem to have these issues. Maybe its something they can fix with more firmware updates.
