Just a few questions

Excuse my ignorance but will Criterion Region 0 discs play on a region 2 dvd player ?

Are the Criterion editions all they are cracked up to be?

Does anybody know if the Bicycle thieves is on dvd?

Thanks for any replies

check out the Movie Review forum, Brooke has an excellent Criterion thread there, which should answer most of your questions. Criterion Ro will play on R2 players, just make sure your TV can handle NTSC, or your player is able to convert NTSC to PaL :)

and yep, in most cases Criterion are cracked up... but don't expect feature packed discs all the time, in many cases just getting the film with a decent print and original soundtrack onto a disc is enough for most people. And it's got to the stage where companies like New Line, are producing discs that are just as good as Criterions. Criterion are well known for not putting your usual studio-produced promo fluff on the disc. Most features are exlusively made by them, or at least well picked. They very rarely include dud features.

Many older Criterion releases are without subtitles, and many are non-anamphoric.. so remember this :)

Yup, Bicycle Thieves AKA "The Bicycle Thief" is definitely out in the US (although I believe the DVD is R0) because I own the disk. No frills but a perfectly competent DVD. You should be able to pick it up for around $20. I'm not sure if there are any R2 or R4 versions out, but I'm sure someone will know the definitive answer.

Edit: Michael Brooke's review of the disk can be found here
