Just noticed that play have the r2 goonies for £9.99 pre order http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=98932

and the r1 for £15.99
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R1&title=93123

The thing is not only the price, atm the r2 lists no extras but the film is 1 hour and 49 minutes long and the r1 is only 1 hours and 30 minutes long!

Any info would be great

The R1 for "Goonies" is 1 hr 54 minutes long (from the back of the box). Lovely transfer and a good commentary that suits the movie (noisy, raucous, often incoherent, but fun).
I'd guess the R2 version will be the same (we're talking Warners here, not Entertainment in Video) but worth checking before you buy.

The R1 if up for £14.99 at cdwow.com and it could be less if you sign up for safedoor and use the £5 voucher (spend must be £15 or more, so youmay need to get 2 DVds or 1 and a CD).

While R1 and R2 are 1.85:1 the R4 is 2.35:1 which appear to be the correct aspect ratio, acording to Rewind/DVDCompare.

Um, haven't measured but the R1 looks like 2.35:1 or very similar. Two nice black horizontal borders on a 16:9 screen (1.85:1 ratio disks tends to be shown as 1.77:1, at least on my telly).

Hmm... Just checked it out on Amazon.com and they list is as 2.35:1... It must be a mistake on the Rewind-comparison page.

R2 seems to be cheap everywhere, and no extras have been listed.

do u think its a bare bones?

The only problem with R1 is that it's a cardboard Warner's snapper case.....

Buyers should note: the R4 uses the R1 NTSC master (both are in 2.35:1, with 16x9 enhancement). However, the R4 comes in an Amaray.

According to Amazon.co.uk it aint out on R2 till September, also The goonies is currently cut in the UK by 16 seconds.

Any idea what exactly is cut?

Do these cuts apply to the previous UK video releases?

Kronik

yea those cuts apply to previous UK releases, so there is still time for the BBFC to pass it uncut on DVD...

I have no idea what the cuts were.... possibly to violence and Bad language... which had to be cut to get a PG.

so nothing has gone thru the BBFC yet ? so how can this DVD come out in March ?

plus when goonies was on Ch5 late last year, there were scenes i have never ever seen before like when one of the bad guys hits an officer on the head with some metal object, was that previously cut in UK ?

I had the R1 version and could have sworn there was a scene where Chunk looks in the Coke/ice box and sees nothing yet there's a body in there? Wasn't there though.....

Its already been rated once, it doesn't have to be rated again. So the distributer can still use the original cut version and keep the PG rating. Or if they want the cuts waived, they'll have to go to the BBFC for classification.

I used to think this too but I'm sure you might be thinking of a scene in Psycho III when some sheriff sticks his hand in a Coca Cola cooler to get some ice and a body is there although he doesn't see it - it makes poor old Norman Bates sweat a bit.

Hmmm.......that rings a bell.

I was just looking into this.

The BBFC have Goonies down as cut by 16 seconds in order to meet the classification of "unmeasured length". Whatever the hell that means. Dated 1985. :gag:

However, they have also classified the Cindi Lauper music video, the making of, and some deleted scenes. These are all dated mid-2001 as "DVD Additional Material".

So what's the delay??

From memory the UK video version is edited for drugs references.

The subtitles translating mouths spanish explanation of "which drugs to put in which of the drawns" and "never to go up the stairs as thats where Mr Walsh keeps his sexual tourture devices" are totally changed

I gave my nephews the German R2 DVD for Xmas and also watched a mate's UK VHS copy around the same time and noticed the drugs subtitles were totally different.

Ah well, boolax to it.

I just ordered it from CD-Wow's hong kong site for 11quid, Region1. Only 2 quid more expensive than the UK version and I can have it within the week, rather than WHO-KNOWS-WHEN.

Octopus? What?? THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!!! :gag:

:D

I tend to go for Region 2; I prefer a nice crisp PAL image.

Did a search on DVDPriceCheck and there is a PAL R4 showing. What's that all about? Have the reissued it as a PAL disc or is it some import? Would seem to be the best version, PAL and amaray:D

Sorry Mate, was referring to a deleted scene :) (on the R1) just before they board the Ship, near the end, you can understand why the dropped it :D looked awful.

They deleted the octopus scene, but they still left a reference to it when they were being interviewed by the press at the end of the movie. I always thought it was something they just made up but after seeing that deleted scene  . BTW the audio/video commentary is great

Most of the cut stuff is swearing that is said by the kids eg. where Chunk at the start of the film spills his drink all over him and says the word ah *****.

Xenole - The scene you mentioned does exist, althought i'm sure it's only shown and discussed in the deleted scenes/outtakes part of the DVD.
