Firstly, Saints Row 2 is packing a lot of elements that should have been included in the first place, namely aircraft. Fixed wing aircraft and helicopters are in, as are motorbikes, jet-skis, speedboats and more, and most of them will have performance upgrades available. The addition of aircraft in particular is handy given that the Stilwater location in SR2 will apparently be 45% larger than that of the first game.
If what little we have seen so far can be believed, you’ll also be able to fly right through a building!
I'm not expecting it to be better than the GTA series but it certainly sounds like it has a lot of potential to be fun. Also the whole game will be playable co-op. Just hope the story is better written than the first one.

Am I the only one that thinks "flying right through a building" sounds like a clipping glitch?
Reminds me of the airliners in GTA3 that you could drive/walk right through.

I think maybe GTA has pushed the game on and it's all looking a little dated.

I'm glad it's getting released fairly far away from GTA4 (sadly for them, the wrong side of it).
I think if this was released in May or June it would be absorbed by GTA sales. As it is, with an August release, I'll be more likely to pick it up.

as much as i liked saints row it was always a stand in for GTA.saying that though saints row was a hell of a lot better than the other GTA rip offs :) and it will be released round about the time people (possibly th emajority) of gta 4 buyers will be finsihed with there release.it would be foolish for saints to go up against GTA.

Saints Row was by far the best of the GTA clones. But I didn't feel compelled to keep playing it, or rather, it was a good game to just mess about in (especially with the 'ragdoll' physics) rather than do the story missions. While reviewers are locked away in hotels playing GTA IV I like the way it was briefly mentioned in last night's 1Up Yours staff podcast - Saints Row 2 is on suicide watch.

Multiplayer sounds awesome on this from what I've read.
You can co-op with your mates to help them, even if it isn't a mission you've unlocked, and when you reach it yourself you don't have to play it again. Sounds pretty smart.
I wonder if Rockstar will have some of the DLC for GTA 4 ready to launch around Saints Row 2's launch date? :suspect:

Funny trailer but since the first Saints Row was a big steaming turd it'll take more than that trailer to persuade me otherwise for the new game. I do hope it turns out good though.

I really enjoyed the first one apart from the invisible cars and unplayable online side.
I'll definitely be purchasing this. Think this will turn out to be a lot of fun after the watered down GTA:IV (like the trailer hints)

Ah I just really disliked it. I kept reading about how much better the gunplay was in Saints Row and admittedly compared to the older GTA games that's true but I was still never keen on it, plus I hated the whole gameworld. It was bland and the fact you had to do crappy side things to open up main missions was REALLY annoying.
The sequel is admittedly looking a lot better so I'll give it a go.

GTA4 has renewed my interest in 'open world' games...that trailer is great and certainly makes me want to have a look at SR2 :D
This does look excellent, my only problem with the first game was the hip hop/gangsta rap themed setting which would be my last choice for a game based around organised crime. That and being rang constantly to defend my turf and the game seemed to freeze up/bug out more than any other 360 title.
That said the dialogue from Saints Row was well written, often self deprecating and generally head and shoulders above similiar games its just that GTA sets the bar so high when it comes to storyline, characters and dialogue. Picking up the hookers in the limo then driving them around whilst they service people was always funny.
The first game did alot right in my opinion so I expect this will be just as good. I hope they put a "mute all" option in the multiplayer for obvious reasons, first game seemed to induce everyone over Live into pretending they were Doughboy.;)
This is 1 of only about 4 games I have bothered to complete. Really liked it apart from the as mentioned invisible cars and no other game has crashed on me more than this but it tought me to save regularly.

They seem to be spending alot of money on advertising. Let us hope the game turns out good too. It is nice to see it is coming out on PC too. Although I do wish they would make Freespace 3 still.

Joining a friend seems straightforward enough, and progressing through missions is just as compelling, perhaps even more so. But it's through completing the various activities like Demolition Derby, Rampage, or the new Fight Club activity that co-op is coming to life. The two players can be on either side of the city, but when one tries to start an activity, the other gets automatically invited to take part. They don't have to, but at least players are given the chance to decide for themselves either way.

Scored 8.5 on this week's Playr & looked very good. Visuals are not a patch on GTA4 & it doesn't look like it offers much new in the gameplay department, but it sure did look like great fun to play. :thumbs:

The bugs that plagued the 1st game are present in the 2nd one, i.e. being trapped in objects, cars disappearing, audio dropping out so that only some sounds can be heard.
Though the game is fun.
I had the odd sound glitch in GTA IV and one collision glitch I can recall - they get everywhere in sprawling games like these I think...

That's possibly because the version all the naughty pirates are playing, comes from reviewer code rather than the finished game.
I hope they all get banned as it will be very easy for MS to do in this case.

It wouldn't surprise me though if it was like that in the final gold disk. I mean the game comes out next week so it really wouldn't surprise me if the naughty version was more or less the same. It just seems like they were pushed for time to get the game out no matter what.

Interestingly, a preview got pulled down yesterday. All that remains seems to be the opening sentences. It appears it was changed from review to preview, then pulled altogether!

I've heard nothing but praise from the people who've already played it, including those I watched play it on a streamed website. Graphics aren't up to GTA4 standards but the fun factor and customisation seem to be making up for it.
I've tried going back to GTA4 after completion to mess around but there's just not enough mess around things to do :(
I'm hoping this will do at least until the DC comes out for GTA4. The first one wasnt brilliant, but if this is even a slight improvement, it'll be good for a giggle. (3% of GTA left to go :( )

9/10 on Eurogamer. I was expecting closer to a 6 or 7. By the sounds of it it's more like the earlier GTA games than GTA4, which is a good thing for me. Can't wait for it now! :D

I've got an obscene amount of store credit with Blockbuster, so I put my pre-order in on Saturday for this.
Still not entirely convinced because I'm not a huge fan of GTA-style games, but my mate bullied me into it.
Saved me money though cos I've cancelled my Fable 2 pre-order to give me time to play this properly.
On average this is scoring 8-9/10 from most reviewers. Good! :)

Sorry, didn't realise you were specifically after a store.Even if you order tomorrow morning, you should still get it on Friday...I've done that a few times.
High street supermarkets seem the best bet lately. Every week one of them usually does the latest weekly release for less than £30. I guess you could check on here Friday morning and any supermarket/store deal would be posted in the bargain forum.

I rarely deviate from them if I want something by the release date as they are always consistent. They may be a couple of quid more on occasion, but when you get the vouchers that appear occasionally and the points accumulation it generally pans out.

Just checked the instruction manual & if you register the game, you get a unlock code for a UFO!
Also included a seperate sheet with codes to unlock a 2-seater Gyrocopter & a mini-motorbike. I assume that's the "pre-order" freebie.
Looking forward to creating a Kiera Knightley character, with as little clothing as possible & obviously bigger boobies. :D

Someone posted this about playing co-op on another board and it really makes me look forward to that feature:
Co-op campaign is a much bigger feature in this game than I was expecting. It's quite a different experience than Co-op campaign in games like Halo 3 or Rainbow Six, or other linear games.
Back in the days of GTA 3 and GTA Vice City, a group of my friends and I discovered the game together. We loved taking turns and reveling in the sheer uniqueness of our experiences as we got into police chases, or just did a particular mission in a unique way as things went horribly wrong. There was much laughter and it was a good time for everyone.
So far, it looks like Saints Row 2 has brought that same atmosphere and amplified it by allowing Co-op. Now we're experiencing things together again, even though we're living in different parts of the country. And we're experiencing unique things that wouldn't be possible in just singleplayer. We're laughing and having a great old time again together in a big open sandbox, whether we're trying to do different activities, missions, or just screwing around.
My only really big complaint: we can only experience this two players at a time. The next GTA/Saints Row really needs to allow this Co-op campaign idea with more people.

Hmmm seems pretty freeze prone, managed about 2 mins of co-op with TonyG before his Xbox went tits up.
:lol: Not a good sign of co-op stability, was it?
Had to reboot & it hadn't saved my created character, so had to go through all that again. Did the first two missions in single-player & worked fine thankfully.
Initial impressions? ... After the glorious visuals of GTA4 this is a huge leap backwards both in looks & feel. Car handling & combat is basic, no real progress in those departments from the first one.
Do I care? ... Not at all. I love Sandbox games, particulary GTA inspired ones & based on the overwhelming amount of things on the map & looking through the stat & unlockable pages, this has plenty to offer. Fingers-crossed that co-op works though, will give it another bash shortly.

the car controls in the 1st game were basic but worked well (I thought they were better than GTA4 tbh). Shame they can't do graphics as good as GTA4 with the destruction and varied gameplay of saints row

Frame-rate on this is fine so far, but there's been a lot of minor/medium tearing. Not enough to be distracting, but definitely noticeable. There's an option to turn sync on though if it gets too annoying.
My main grumble is the camera while driving, is far too close to the vehicle & looking at the controls, I don't see any option to change it. :|

Definitely going to be up for some co-op tomorrow night and over the weekend of anyone's interested. Really looking forward to picking this up, it's the first big game that's been released since I've had my 360 so a great opportunity to get on Live which I haven't actually used yet!

It was acceptable at the time as a rushed-out, early GTA clone, but after GTA IV such shonky free-roaming engines aren't really acceptable. I can't get past Mercenaries 2's visual crapness, for example, especially since Pandemic got such great performance out of the previous generation and other engines out there (Dice's, for example) show you can have that kind of destructability and still look great.
I'm off to toot my own horn because I thought the first game was boring as sin, too, so the mantra of "it's crap but fun" doesn't apply to me, unless this has had some kind of cosmic makeover.
You can change the driving controls in the options.

Mercenaries 2's visual crapness is the least of its problems
Did a few co-op missions with Matt KB, we did the one where you recruit your gang initially and the bloke said "What type of gang do you want" but the customisation screen only flashed up for a split second for both of us. Please tell me there's a way to still do that after the fact.

besides the horrible graphics there's quite a lot wrong with it, camera, controls, physics, tearing etc etc
it's still a blast, a lot more death & destruction than GTA4 & the various mini games are pretty good, I can see the co-op being a laugh, tbh it is a bit ****** :D
only picked it up after cancelling COD5 & FC2, once Dead Space & LBP arrive next week this wont get a look in ;)

Yes, within the 2nd crib you earn (the one underground where you killed all the hobos) there's an icon that allows you to change the style of Gang clothing, gang vehicles & best of all, your Gang "signal" of which there's plenty to choose from, lots of them being funny.
I've racked up about 3hrs on this now & it continues to get better. Nothing special with the missions so far but the variety of other sub-missions is impressive & fun to play. The Zombie game in particular was cool.
I'm also getting to grips with the vehicle handling which is basic & arcadey & the camera is waaay too close, but getting used to it now. Combat is basic too, with no cover options, but using other people as shields is a nice new feature.
The level of customisation is immense. From the beginning character-creation, to your clothing, pimping out your cribs & the vehicle add-ons, there is a vast amount to get through.
Definitely living up to the suprisingly high ratings so far. :thumbs:

That's sort of fair enough, though, isnt it? And in GTA4 you did have to actually save game to lose the wanted level, as I got quite a shock the first time I headed back to my little safe house only for the police to burst in on me.

This game is a lot more fun for me than GTA4. Probably because your health can regenerate and there are checkpoints scattered throughout each mission so you don't have to worry about doing the whole lot again if you get busted or die! :doh:

ditto, doesn't have the polish but it's got some very good missions, & the variety of side missions makes up for a lot of the faults still hate the driving but can live with that, think Eurogamer were VERY generous with their score.

Its a excellent game, they have fixed most of the problems (makes a change for developers to actually listen to criticism of a past game) Its over the top action but its fun (GTA4 missions (were dull a times and side missions were deathly dull)
:lol: at using a chainsaw on someone who had dropped litter on one of the Fuzz side missions. Also the septic avenger on zombie killing game are great fun.
Had a good, long 3+ hour co-op session there with Harsin which only froze the once (during a cut-scene!) .... co-op missions get good later on where you each have different objectives, although it was unclear at first what to do. Lots of unlockables & still only scratched the surface of the zillion different activities. Helicopter handling is decent & getting used to the vehicle handling too.
Great Fun! :)
Had a couple of hours at this now and it's definitley fun. I'm not sure the movement control system feels quite as 'right' as it does in GTA IV though, I love the physics used for driving though, makes it a blast!
Only a couple of hours in and really still getting used to the controls but if anyone fancies some co-op then please add me.

The only GTA like game I've played is GTAIV. So the roughness of the game and its engine in parts (strange AI, simpler graphics engine, strange traffic patterns) make me miss the slickness of GTAIV (and its music).
That being said, I have to give SR2 credit. It doesn't waste time to throw you into the thick of the action. I'm still wrestling with the controls but I've been through a lot in 1 hour of play.
The AI does seem a bit inconsistent at times (sometimes I kill someone and nobody reacts and others all hell breaks loose) and the septic activity wasn't a ton of fun. But I'm looking forward to discovering the other activities. It certainly has potential. and the char customisation is mind boggingly good.

The choppers can be a bit odd. A few times I've managed to get myself stuck upside down on top of buildings. I couldn't do much other than wiggle about a bit and hope it exploded.

Sorted out the Gamestation cock up - call them and ask if you can swap at the store. When you go to the store, they'll call them, get an authorisation code and do the swap, so I'll be playing later. :)
Limited is more than a little cack, mind - the USB key has a comedy 28MB of content but at least it's a 1Gb device.
13 hrs played since getting it yesterday waaaa I can't stop (and only 15% in, too many things keep distracting me!)
At first I thought the graphics were terrible compared to gta and driving a car I felt that sinking feeling that I'd bought a stinker. Few hours later and you just don't notice anymore because there's just so many fun things to do.
Been to the plastic surgeon twice already, customised loads of cars and bikes and unlocked some quite fab upgrades from the many activities available eg twice as much sprint energy and some lovely pistols
Had some great battles, having an AI chum around whenever you want is great and when the enemy gangs get really **** off it can get quite nasty.
Best lol moment so far was throwing a pedestrian through a passing car windscreen and the car driving off with corpse in front seat :clap:
Oh, I also turned vsync on and it sorts out all the tearing with little to no noticable framerate loss as far as I could tell.
Anyone done the car surfing yet? Found that by accident. You can also handstand on on the vehicle too. :lol:

Nice deal from Game today - picked this up with trade-ins and got the Collectors Edition for the same price as the standard edition. The Game guy said they were just trying to get rid of them ASAP so nice little bonus :)
This is just so much fun to play, I took a hostage earlier whilst jacking a car and had just got into a police chase when Kharma Chameleon comes on the radio, absolutley awesome.
I picked this up on the way home tonight and had a quick shot - it's good fun indeed. Love the customisation you can do to the character - I'm running amok as a fat hispanic lady in a fetching boob tube.
Visually seems to echo the lurid neon of GTA:Vice City and has the same degree of mad songs on the radio - first song I heard was Down Under by Men at Work! And you can still hear it play once you get out the car till you move away. :notworthy
If GTA:IV is The Godfather, this is Snatch! :D

I think I need to give the game a bit longer, but at the moment, I'm just finding it a slog to get going. Not very impressed so far.

thought they were the same as chop shop (go to area & wait for car to show) not all have locations but those that do take some searching, but on some occasions I've randomly spotted a reticule to show a target, can't quite figure out how & when the target appears :thinking:

for the hitman missions, some you have to something eg spray a tag or kill pimps. it gives a clue in the list of hits

Has anyone done the plane race where you need to take off using a road as a runway then fly through some markers? I only seem to be able take off 1 in 5 times without hitting oncoming traffic then having to faf about till the timer runs out or try to blow the plane up so I can start again. :|

some do just appear in certain areas at certain times eg
after completing one of the ronin missions I was in the cemetery and Justin from the prison hitman list was just there because I was there at a certain time, he was not selected on my list
I killed the cop that's on the hitman list when he just appeared at random during a police shootout.
Game just continues to get better & better, both in single-player & co-op. Completed all the Ronin missions which were good fun apart from the annoying final boss fight which I eventually did but not really sure how I did it.
Anyone worked out how to do a proper base-jump? ... I've leapt off several tall buildings, opened my chute & landed fine, but it doesn't register on the stats page.
Demolition derbies were fun but too easy, as was the Fight Club events, which annoyingly didn't unlock the achievement when I completed it. :|
Also pleased to find the female Borat swimsuit for my ridiculously sexy main character, which shows off her crackin' arse to great effect. :)

I have found that of the two 'adrenaline-boosting' areas, one is usually quite dead but the other a lot busier with traffic. Definitely a degree of fortune involved in getting those combos going, too easy to land miles away or be swiped sideways.

I don't have the game but one possibility is that you might need to meet the requirements of Base jumping i.e. B.A.S.E jumping - Building, Antenna (or tower), Span (bridge), Earth (a cliff for example).

True, the graphics engine is a little backwards (think original XBOX) and there's the odd glitch, but played this for a few hours yesterday in co-op and had a ball. Just goes to show that game play wins every time - sure it could be a 10/10'er if they'd improved the graphics and some of the dynamics, but I play a game for the enjoyment and entertainment personally.
Loved the demolition derby mini game.

It was from doing level 6 of Snatch. Not the one in Chinatown, but the other one. I forget what the location is called.
25 hrs played and only 24% complete! This is gaming crack for anyone who likes to just mess around :)
Highlight last night were seeing 8 scantily dressed ho's from one of my gang neighbourhoods randomly chasing a nude fat bloke around Benny Hill style, then beating the crap out of him.
After buying a new set of expensive guns I went on a 5 star cop rampage and the carnage lasted for about 30 mins including commandeering a swat armoured car complete with minigun on roof. Running out of ammo I went down in a hail of bullets charging a barricade armed with only my ninja sword :D

It was from doing level 6 of Snatch. Not the one in Chinatown, but the other one. I forget what the location is called.
Thanks - have done a few levels already, but will concentrate on finishing it.

I found it quite easy if you use something like the police five-o and not the crappy pimp-mobile they supply you
I've been good and resisted buying this but this thread isn't making it easy. I didn't get that far with the original Saints Row even though I usually love sandbox games and GTA in particular. The graphics don't even look as good as the first Saints Row. The gameplay is what counts of course so is it really that good?

I would say the graphics are better than the 1st game, also the lighting is much better. I would say as gameplay goes its better than GTA4

I was shocked not to see your name appear online playing this over the weekend. The amount of fun gameplay this has to offer is vast. I racked up around 13hrs on this over the weekend & have only completed 39% & i'm not even close to be tired of it, actually eager to play it more. Only Dead Space, later this week has a chance of dragging me away. Fable 2 & Far Cry 2 will sit gathering dust until I complete this. I'm convinced this will easily find a place in my 2008 Top Ten. :thumbs:
If you enjoy messing around and causing mayhem as much as doing proper game missions, then yes. It's not as slick as GTA:IV but the background graphics aren't as bad as the stills show them and there is fun and madness around every corner - the map is littered with stuff to do.

Have had one crash tho, which meant I lost the work I did creating a stunningly hot harajuku girl.
I'll probably get this even though I've already repurchased San Andreas (XBOX Originals).
the unlimited ammo for SMG's is a very good, the one you unlock GAL 43? + unlimited is quite useful :thumbs:
I really disliked the first Saints Row but am really enjoying this one. For me I like the way it's even more tongue in cheek than the first game so you really can't take the gangsta theme too seriously at all.
There's nothing more fun than having your co-op partner driving down the road at high speed whilst you are on the roof doing handstands :D
It's just packed full of minigames and fun things to do, my favourites so far being FUZZ, Trail Blazers and Septic Avenger. The Helicopter Assault one is fun too but rock hard.

So much fun this game - my guy is a clone of Kimbo Slice except he won't be losing any MMA fight in 7 seconds. He's proper 'bad ass' :D
