I have a multi region Sony player and have always bought R2 discs, on the odd occasion R1.
A work colleague says R4 discs are cheaper and have better picture quality, is he correct?

I have the definitive answer:

It depends!

R4 are PAL like R2 so, in theory, a better picture than R1.

They are most definately cheaper and sometimes earlier with releases than R2 (Final Fantasy for example). Look at http://www.ezydvd.com.au/ for examples.

R1 are better for uncensored violence and extras (normally)

Unless you are fanatical or watching on a very big screen the picture difference between NTSC (R1) & PAL (R2/4) is barely noticable.

There isn't a "best region" - only a "best for that particular disc region"

I hope this helps

Picture quality comes down to the individual discs for any region, occaisonally we get things earlier than in R1 land - like Buffy and Terminator (not sure about R2 though). But as far as price goes, absolutly, definitly R4 is cheaper than both R2 and R1 - even with shipping included. The poor aussie peso buys very little of the big guys dough (US/UK) that it means you guys clean up in the savings deptment. The only other option that may be similar in price (and this comes down to your region preference for any given disc) is the canadian editions (R1). check out some of their web sites for options.

www.absound.com is the best of them in service and price (even though the site isn't much to look at).

Ezydvd are my favourite region 4 supplier but I feel I should warn you that they are not always customs friendly, my last few boxsets all got caught. Were you aware of the £18.00 limit for importing dvds, so if you do not want to risk a customs charge try to stay around the £18.00 mark. It's sometimes nice to chance it because it's great when you get away with it so good luck.

Yep I have used both EzyDVD and now use ABSound for nearly all my R1's as they are so cheap. However if it ain't in stock then it takes ages, if it is in stock then you get it the week before the release date normally.

DVDCrave are quite good and if you use DHL for shipment you have track and trace + insurance for that little bit extra. Also on the DHL paperwork the full amount was not declared and sailed past customs :)
