David Lean is best remembered for the big SCOPE epics, but just how many people have seen his early b/w works? Lawrence of Arabia is one of my most treasured films, but looking at the director's complete body of work, he's certainly produced some wonderful stuff.

I re-watched Oliver Twist, I'm gobsmacked how authentic the film looks - you really feel that Lean actually went back in time to film the Dickens' stories. The attention to detail is mesmerising as is the stunning photography, the blacks are so deep.

Alec Guinness as Fagin is definitive, it's so damn eerie and perfect. I can't get over how fantastic Alec is in this role. The kid who plays Oliver is perfection, the demeanour of the kid is how I imagined it.

Great Expectations deserves equal praise, both are much alike.

Thoughts?

Let's not forget one of my all time favourites - "Hobson's Choice" fantastic film that so deserves any dvd release, never mind just a Criterion release.
