View Full Version : The DVD Forums Top 50 Games of 2007

Mr M0by
30-11-2007, 10:12
It comes around quickly, doesn't it?* Here we are already preparing now for our sixth Forums end of year poll. The usual rules apply, post your 10 favourite games of the year (or less) in order of preference, 10 points are awarded to your first choice down to 1 for your tenth.

You can vote for import titles released this year but you won't be able to vote for them in the next poll ie. Rock Band. Similarly if you placed Excite Truck in your list last year I won't count it if it appears again amongst your 2007 choices. Expansion packs won't be counted either, unless they've been released as stand-alone editions, so Civ: Beyond the Sword would be ok. Iirrc.

Honestly, other than that it's pretty much straight forward. You have until Wednesday Jan 16th to get your list in, so time to include your Xmas purchases/gifts.

Previous luminaries.

2006
Gears of War
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

2005
Resident Evil 4
Pro Evolution Soccer 5
Battlefield 2

2004

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Burnout Takedown

2003
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Project Gotham Racer 2

2002
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Halo: Combat Evolved

*Even more so when i realise i've started the thread about 7-10 days earlier than usual. Not to worry.

Is the Orange Box counted as 1 game?

Mr M0by
30-11-2007, 10:27
Yes. So there's a fair chance it might top the overall list me thinks.

mr starface
30-11-2007, 10:32
Hmm want to play my Assasins Creed and Mass Effect before I arrive at a definitive top 10. Wish Play Asia would hurry them along!

ShakeyJake
30-11-2007, 10:50
Another question... Do the Sam & Max episodes count as 1 game? I'd be inclined to say count each season as one full game.

ShakeyJake
30-11-2007, 13:03
I'll start off but subject to change. No doubt I've forgotten something. I still haven't got round to play Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect, and there's a few PS2/3 games that may have made the list if I'd played them :p

1 Crackdown
2 Orange Box
3 Super Mario Galaxy
4 Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
5 Call of Duty 4
6 Forza 2
7 Bioshock
8 Sam & Max: Season 1
9 Peggle
10 Pokemon Diamond\Pearl

MrSpeed
30-11-2007, 13:12
Do we need to put down what console/PC/handheld we played the games on?

Dunny
30-11-2007, 14:33
thats a good idea dude, just to see what formats of games are popular, although i think i know the answer.

I can't really vote for the Orange Box because I've not played Episode 1 and 2 yet, just Portal and Half-Life 2. But also because I've voted for Half-Life 2 when it was first released. So I've not played enough new content yet. I've still only played a few minutes of Blue Dragon and just never found the time to go back to it.

Ged, is it worth using a dedicated survey sites to get results?

You may have to take nominations though and then get people to vote.

Hmm, not played many different games this year. This is the best I can do unless I play something else between now and christmas :)

All played on the PC

1. The Witcher
2. Bioshock
3. Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East (an expansion pack, but standalone as well)
4. Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (if as claimed in the 1st post standalone as well - not sure myself)

That's it. I have played other games, honest :) , but they were all expansion packs, or from last year, so don't count

01-12-2007, 17:07
Very tricky, despite a large number of high profile releases in 2007 not many of them have been particularly good.

1) The Orange Box
2) Final Fantasy XII
3) Mass Effect
4) Guitar Hero II
5) Final Fantasy VI Advance

I'd probably add Rock Band if it was actually out here and I'd played it.

MarcusUK
01-12-2007, 17:46
Will prolly need an edit before the closing date. But for now:

1. Call Of Duty 4 (360)

4. God of War 2 (PS2)
5. Crackdown (360)
6. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (Wii)
7. Tomb Raider Anniversary (PS2)

Played lots of games this year but many of them have been from 2006, here's how I'd rank the ones I have played though (subject to change):

1) Call of Duty 4
2) The Orange Box
3) BioShock,
4) Mass Effect
5) Crackdown
6) The Darkness
7) Tomb Raider Anniversary
8) Lost Planet

Damn so many lists include Crackdown, I saw this going for £6 and figured it'd be crap!

Brand new? Either way it's an absolute bargain at that price!

[edit: Just realised that Lost Planet came out this year, although I kinda lost interest long before I got anywhere near the end.]

Have I appeared to miss anything of note of that list?

Boom Boom Rocket (XBLA) and Puzzle Series Vol.5: Slitherlinks (DS), if you're making a list to have choices then I'll be possibly wanting those two :)

Mr M0by
02-12-2007, 10:27
1. Guitar Hero 2 (was released on the 360 in 2007.. does it still count??)

Yeah that's fine as you hadn't voted for it on a previous format. Nor had Da Outsider.

2. WoW Burning Crusade (PC)

Unfortunately I won't be including it as (afaik) it requires the original WoW to run it.

4. Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (if as claimed in the 1st post standalone as well - not sure myself)

I was sure it was and though there is no reference on the box that says the original is required, that i can see, likewise it doesn't say "original game not required". It seems to be the former anyway, so i won't be including it.

Boom Boom Rocket (XBLA) and Puzzle Series Vol.5: Slitherlinks (DS), if you're making a list to have choices then I'll be possibly wanting those two :)

These are others i've added this morning:

Armoured Core 4
Beats PSPN
Wartech: Senko No Ronde
Contra 4
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
Trials of Topoq PSN
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (PSP)
Eledees
Kororinpa
Picross DS
Children of Mana
TrackMania United
Mario Party 8
Endless Ocean
Smarty Pants
SSX Blur
Championship Manager 08
Boom Boom Rocket XBLA
Puzzle Series Vol 5: Slitherlinks
More Brain Training
Heroes of Might & Magic V: Tribes of the East

I think that's a pretty conclusive list overall but I might have missed something. I'll post a test link shortly.

3. The Orange Box
4. Mass Effect
5. Bioshock
6. Flatout: Ultimate Carnage

Special mention to those that just missed out:

Glad to see Skate, Flatout Ultimate Carnage, Crackdown and Assassin's Creed on peoples' lists. Only the top 10 count but quite a few games that really deserve recognition were just outside my top 10. Even though I posted a list of 30 games I thoroughly enjoyed almost all of the top 20 and liked all the games from 21 to 30 as well.

Very difficult decisons to be made for top 10 this year. I obviously based my choices on the single player aspect of the game and many of my favourite games had a strong story element and were good across the board. Other things like the choice between GRAW2 and Call of Duty 4 was mostly down to liking the more tactical aspects of GRAW2 and the hardest difficulty not being a complete pain.

A good year for games I think.

Doesn't that say more about the surprising brilliance of crackdown than anything about Halo 3?

TonyG
03-12-2007, 16:40
Yeah, that was kinda my point. As soon as the Halo Beta was stuck onto Crackdown it was assumed it was a ploy to sell a bad game & as it turns out, it was far more enjoyable & entertaining to play than H3.

1. Bioshock 360 - Big surprise for me, but this game oozes class from its pores. Clear winner.

2. COD4 - Short but enjoyable

 Er... no.

My game of the year each time has never ever even made our Top 10: Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Katamari Damacy, Guitar Hero.... :(

btw i think i must be the only one to include final fantasy tactics for psp on my list its a top game !

 and not even you have actually voted for it! Or anything so far.
I might be getting it post Boxing Day or Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. Definitely not both. Decisions, decisions.

Woo someone has mentioned Stranglehold, I really enjoyed this, got my elite on a friday, official mag with Stranglehold demo on a saturday and the game the monday after! It's great fun, I'll go back to it to get more achievements one day but right now other games are getting in the way

i got crackdown for the beta and (like you and superstar say) i was surprised at how good it is, especially in co-op, but i still think halo 3 is far superior :)

* also can i vote for guitar hero 2 again on the 360 if i've already voted for it previously on ps2? it has new songs - if that helps my case at all?

Halo 3 sure has superior longitivity but for those first dozen or so hours playing Crackdown, very little comes close for pure gaming joy & entertainment this year.

Huh? ... Judging from early results, the only ones I expect to see in the top 10 are COD4, The Orange Box & Bioshock, all of which are more than deserving to be there. Halo3 also might get enough sympathy votes to crawl in.

The Orange Box is a superb games package but if you've voted for Half-Life 2 in a previous year (I did) then I think judging the package on the new content you haven't played before is the way to go. I haven't played enough of the games to make an informed decision so haven't included the Orange Box in my list at all.

The same goes for games where I haven't played enough of them, such as Blue Dragon and Valkyrie: Profile 2. It didn't seem right including the Sega Mega Drive Collection as a new game either although I had never played games like Comix Zone before.

As for good year for games, yes I think it has been. It isn't all FPS either: a year with PGR4, Forza 2, DiRT and Flatout: Ultimate Carnage is a good year for driving games as well. New game series/franchises such as Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Crackdown, Skate and Uncharted. Even the old PS2 saved a few awesome games for the console to go out on a high: Okami, Gof of War II, Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

1) Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core (PSP)
Yes, it is in Japanese but I've had a really good guide and have managed to bungle my way through it. As a massive FF7 fan this gets my GOTY vote with a very cool combat system, awesome graphics (especially for a handheld system), some of the best cutscenes I have ever witnessed and characters that I actually care about.

2) Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Great characters, great graphics for such an old system, again awesome cutscenes and I love the new gambit combat system. Another exceptional outing in the Final Fantasy series. Released in February 2007 in the EU so makes my 2007 top 10 with no problem.

3) God of War 2 (PS2)
Played this through for the first time upscaled and smoothed on my PS3 and it was an awesome experience. Graphically at times could be mistaken for a lesser 360 or PS3 game. Perfect controls, possibly the best combat system ever (it's between this and Ninja Gaiden Sigma for me), a lead character that again I actually like, some hugely varied environments and still probably the best quick time events in the business.

4) Bioshock (PC/360)
This game exudes style and quality from every pore, initially I started playing the 360 version and then migrated to the PC version once that was released and had no problems playing through the first few hours again. The game is truly amazing, more linear then it first seems, but still, I was blown away by it from start to finish (even if the ending(s) was a bit sub par).

5) Heavenly Sword (PS3)
If there was a "style top 10" Heavenly Sword would have to top the list imo. Yes it's short, yes it is repetitive in places but still...it has taken the cinematic gaming experience to a whole new level imo, probably the best game graphically of the year for me, excellent voice acting and capture performances, combat almost as good as God of War, a great story, great characters with a decent sense of humour thrown in for good measure. While disappointingly short, what is there is exceptional imo and I have actually spent a hell of a lot of time going back and doing certain sections again (the fights with Flying Fox for example). While probably not an all time bona fide classic, it was certainly one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences of the year for me.

6) Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction (PS3)
Really like the R&C games and this is the best in the series for me. When they said it's like playing a Pixar movie they weren't wrong, graphically it really does show off the potential of the PS3. Great platforming and shooting mechanics, broken up to perfection with sub games, sections of the game are created on such a massive scale it really does make you question your definition of what makes a truly great game at times. Again, every PS3 owner should get this.

7) Call of Duty 4 (PC/360/PS3)
What else can be said about this game that hasn't already been said? I played the PC version from start to finish in just a weekend and while I don't normally like war games, this hooked me. Not sure if the console versions would make my top 10 because I find in FPS games the pad creates an interface barrier that just isn't there on a keyboard and mouse setup on a decent PC. Looks sweet, runs very well, great single player, solid multiplayer, awesome.

8) Resident Evil 4 (Wii)
The Wii controls add a certain something to this game that had me begging for more, even through the dated graphics. Oodles of atmosphere, a great plot, some of the best realised controls I've ever used. Brilliant game, made even better by the Wii controls.

9) Motorstorm (PS3)
Released in March over here as one of the only decent PS3 launch titles. No other game has made me so angry, the AI in Motorstorm appears not to be designed with winning the race in mind, but deliberately stitching the player up! A good choice of genuinely different vehicles (between classes that is), varied tracks, multiple routes and some insane jumps. Graphically few games fit together as well as Motorstorm and it's so easy to get into as a beginner, even the missus helped me through the first few race days with no issue. This is a must have for PS3 owners imo.

10) Assassin's Creed (360/PS3)
One of the most anticipated games of the year for me, and despite what the critics said, it didn't disappoint me! Huge cities, gorgeous graphics, a massive game world to explore, good story and some really memorable moments make this one of the games of the year for me. Repetitive it may be, but there are so many ways of completing the tasks that it need not be, it really is your choice. High profile assassination and being chased by the guards over rooftops, a leap of faith and away. It's like Grand Theft Auto mixed with The Bible! Sort of.

Honourable mentions:

- Uncharted Drake's Fortune (PS3): not played enough of this to put it in my top 10, but I get the feeling it would certainly be up there somewhere.

- Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo (XBLA): excellent puzzle action, spent many an hour on this with friends. On another day this may make my top 10.

- Gears of War (PC): even better than the excellent 360 version, even though I'd already played Gears through on the 360, I wanted to see the extra content on the PC version and it just reaffirmed how good a game it really is.

- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii): again, not had the time to really explore this but as a big Mario fan I will certainly be putting some time aside for it and as with most (proper) Mario games, I highly doubt I will be left disappointed.

- Metroid Prime Corruption (Wii): great game, great controls, not enough time to play it I'm afraid. Will get round to it at some point, the brief blasts I've had look very promising.

- Mass Effect (360): as a huge fan of the KOTOR games (specifically the first) I have been waiting for this for so damn long, certainly a game I will be dedicating a lot of time to in the near future. Gorgeous looking, massively deep characters, a huge universe to explore, this should be right up my street!

- Crysis (PC): while it may have brought my once proud PC to its knees, it is an excellent game. While it reeks of Far Cry in many ways, the nanosuit and destructible environments add enough to the game to make it feel fresh. Very, very good.

None of the games I purchased this year really fell into the bad category with no redeeming aspects to them. I watched all the Harry Potter movies for the first time and played the Harry Potter game in the sapce of a few days. The game allows you to explore the world of Harry Potter which was OK but the gameplay itself was definitely lacking but I was determined to beat the chess challenges. "Would you like a game of Gobstones?" ;)

For me my list would be (subject to change before deadline):

1. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

2. The Orange Box ( 360 - whole package is just brilliant, best FPSs ever made)

3. Call Of Duty 4 (360)

4. Bioshock (360)

5. God Hand (PS2 - probably a weird choice for a lot of people but I love this game to bits, one of the finest and fun combat systems in a fighting game for years)

6. God Of War 2 (PS2)

7. Super Paper Mario (Wii)

8. Crackdown (360 - wonderful game and lost a lot of time to it)

9. Earth Defense Force 2017 (360 - not a lot to it graphics wise but damnit it's fun taking down lots of aliens on screen)

10. Metroid Prime 3 (Wii)

Damage Inc

bearing in mind all I have is a 360 & a mac (and now a PS3), my list so far:

1. Orange Box (360) - Finished the lot and wished there was still more to play, unfortunately COD4 then came out and stole TF2's thunder.
2. COD4 (360) - Excellent single player, possibly the best multiplayer so far on XBL.
3. Uncharted - Drake's Fortune (PS3) - this deserves to do really well, so far the best PS3 game I have played.
4. Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction (PS3) - fantastic graphics and gameplay, the PS3 needs more good titles like this.
5. Eternal Sonata (360) - not usually a fan of turn based RPGs, however the fighting system in this is nigh on perfect. Also the anime graphics are incredible.
6. Mass effect (360) - did not think I would like this, however i've found it totally captivating. This would have been in the top 3 if it hadn't been for all the boring side quests and the annoyance of realising the game had not auto-saved a half hour back.
7. Crackdown (360) - fun fun fun is the name of the game. a surprise hit that I did not stop playing until I had finished it (couldnt be bothered with some of those achievements though)
8. Bioshock (360) - An excellent intro, and stunning graphics, the story was also quite good. Definately not as good as the pre-release hype around it suggested though.
9. Ace Combat 6 (360) - I have never liked flight sims so always been put off by dog-fighting. decided to give the demo a go and pre-ordered it straight away. I would have placed this higher if the single player game had been a bit longer. for a novice at this type of game i'd have expected to struggle, but it is very easy to pick up and play.
10. Guitar Hero 3 (360) - a good game, but lacks a lot of good songs. i'm now up to hard and getting my arse kicked on the later tracks, not sure if my little brain can handle the ferocity.

I also don't agree with the 'so bad it's good' , it sets out to do what it wants to do and does it very well. It may not be much technically (well graphics wise, it does cope with a lot of stuff onscreen very well) but it's got the gameplay and that's what matters.

Would it be possible to calculate results with a weighting system in mind?

To clarify: There are obviously a lot of 360 owners on these boards, myself included, now this will lead to the sheer number of votes for 360 games being put forward to be substantially higher than the Wii and especially the PS3. While this would make the chart representative of the number of votes per game it has very little reflection on the quality of games.

For example, let's way there were 3 times as many 360 owners as there were PS3 owners, for ease we'll call the number of 360 owners 90 vs the 30 PS3 owners. Now let's say 60 of those 360 owners have Halo 3 in their top 10 games and all 30 PS3 owners have Uncharted in their top 10, obviously Halo 3 would win on flat out numbers, but would that be strictly fair considering a higher proportion of PS3 owners having Uncharted in the top 10? So in this case let's say we weighted 360 games as 1 point per vote and PS3 games as 3 points per vote (excluding multiformat ofc, this would balance the ratio of 360 to PS3 owners in this example) this would give Halo 3 60 points and Uncharted 90 points thus putting Uncharted above Halo 3 in this example. Using the same setup lets use Crackdown and Ratchet & Clank ToD, Crackdown with 45 votes, R&C with 15 votes. Obviously numerically this puts Crackdown well ahead of R&C but using a weighted system to account for the ratio of 3:1 in favour of the 360, that would actually put them both on equal footing.

This could be done for each of the less popular systems, with the most popular, being the 360 in this case almost certainly, as the yardstick and then adjust the "worth" of games on other formats according to the ratio of owners. This would actually give PSP and PS3 (and to a lesser extent Wii) games a decent shot at the top 10 for example, and I don't think many fair minded people would argue that something like Uncharted is not worthy of a top 10 position but it would never achieve it based purely on numbers because it would never receive enough votes in a strictly numerical system.

Does this make sense to anyone else or would it just overly complicate matters?

You can't say whether a game deserves to be in there unless you have played it - I've read one review of Uncharted and it got 7/10 - so I wouldn't say it deserves to be in the top 10 unless I have played it. You can't go giving a weighting based on the assumption of ratio of owners....

Resident evil 4 is prime of example of this.
Dropping £50 on a GameCube to play Resi 4 isn't quite the same as dropping £350 on a PS3 to play Drake's Fortune is it? Anyway, it was just an idea to try and avoid the sheer number of 360 games being voted for pushing some genuinely good titles on other formats further down the list where they wouldn't necessarily belong. Resident Evil 4 (Wii) is also an example of this because it will almost certainly never garner enough votes to make the top 10, but imo it should almost certainly be in the top 10. See what I mean?

You can't say whether a game deserves to be in there unless you have played it - I've read one review of Uncharted and it got 7/10 - so I wouldn't say it deserves to be in the top 10 unless I have played it. You can't go giving a weighting based on the assumption of ratio of owners....

Exactly my point, if you haven't played it you wouldn't vote for it obviously. I've not even voted for it [Uncharted] at this stage. The ratio wouldn't be based on an assumption, it would just be a means for a PS3 game to go head to head with an equal quality 360 game, isn't this chart about quality because if it isn't that would simply make it a sales chart...have I totally missed the point or am I misunderstanding something? I mean are we in agreement that Uncharted, regardless of how good it is, will never make the top 10 in a strictly numerical vote based chart on this forum?

I own and play games on all formats (bar PS3) and most of my top 10 would be 360 with the odd wii/DS game thrown in. The 360 has had a fantastic year and I'm sure you'll find that a lot of the people voting solely/majority for 360 do have other games systems.

I think we should multiply any Spectrum votes by 1000.

Resi 4 wii edition won't make it because many of us played it on GC, PS2 quite a while ago. Nothing to do with how good it is or isn't. Resi 4 was a great game 2 years ago and still is today.

we have format specific charts produced anyway I think.

best make a start on my nominations I think

1 Orange Box (PC) Although I really think Portal and TF should be allowed to stand alone, HL2 is ancient and ep1 and 2 are expansions to it. Portal best game of the year without a doubt.

2 Uncharted (PS3)
3 GH2 (360)
4 GH3 (360)
5 Mass Effect (360)
6 Bioshock (360)
7 Crackdown (360)
8 STALKER (PC)
9 Forza 2 (360)
10 Okami (PS2)

Zelda on the Wii would have been my No1.... unfortunately it wasn't released until mid-Dec 2006 so would never make it into any "game of the year" competition, the same applies with R6:Vegas... too late for last year's voting, too early for this year.

Therefore I'll go with:

1) Trackmania United (PC) - endless hours of online fun with mates.
2) Flatout Ultimate Carnage (360) - excellent single player and the only game I've ever been happy to play online with "randoms" and, imo, the best game ever for online tears of laughter with mates!
3) Guitar Hero 3 (360) - good single player and local co-op, many a late night session of "just one more song" with mates.
4) PGR4 (360) - good single player and endless hours of online fun with mates.
5) Picross (DS) - a nice little puzzler, damn addictive!
6) GR:AW2 (360) - Bought for Online use only - great fun with a bunch of mates.
7) Blazing Angels - Squadrons WWII (360) - good single player and top fun online with mates. (hmmmm.. I see a trend here! )
.
.
.
50) Pro Evo 2008 (360) - ermm... best ignore that choice! It does get my vote for biggest waste of money of 2007 though! Everyone who bought it should be given a full refund!

It doesn't bother me at all if none of my top 10 get into the top 10 of 2007, (just as well as on the Albums of the year poll that is guaranteed). I would be happy if somebody looked at a game because I placed it on the list. But everyone has their own personal opinions on games and if Uncharted or Okami don't get many votes then it is a reflection of peoples' favourite games of 2007 not a definitive list of quality games of 2007. It reflects the popularity of consoles as well as games and there is no need to give under-represented consoles or games more weight IMO. The top 50 games is a snapshot of popular opinion and anybody's opinion is no more or less valid than the next person's opinion. That said, I like reading peoples' top 10 lists more than the final results.

That's fair enough chap, I didn't realise there would be individual charts as well...although the PS3, PSP and the Wii would struggle to fill a top 10 (on each format respectively) with games that I personally would consider really, really good, but still. :)

As for the Time top 10 (listed again for reference)...

1. Halo 3
2. The Orange Box
3. Rock Band
4. Super Mario Galaxy
5. Bioshock
6. Call of Duty 4
7. Zelda Phantom Hourglass
8. Mass Effect
9. Ace Combat 6
10. Gods of War 2

Very pleased to see God of War 2 on there, never played Ace Combat beyond the demo and not had a chance to play Phantom Hourglass either. Not really keen on The Orange Box being included in there either really, considering how old Half-Life 2 is and would it still stand up on the actual new content alone? SMG, CoD4, Mass Effect, Bioshock, all very worthy though.

(Not sure if this has been posted before, apologies if it has.)

Bioshock as game of the year, not my first choice but still, again not a terrible choice at all imo. Again The Orange Box being in there does ruffle my feathers slightly as a PC gamer considering how old HL2 is, and at this point in time I would probably put Uncharted above R&C Tools for the PS3 title, but there you go, different strokes (and a big fat chequebook possibly? ;)) make the world go round. :)

I must say, the latter part of 2007 has been somewhat of a "golden age" of gaming. So many top titles released this year, many of us were struggling to find the money for all this.

But my top 10 of the year are all 360 games.

1. BioShock (360) - Without question my favourite game of the year, by a landslide.
2. Assassin's Creed (360) - Has provided me with some of the most memorable moments with it's free running and "rock climbing", beautiful architecture and stunning views of it's landscapes.
3. Call Of Duty 4 (360) - A brilliantly addictive shooter
4. Halo 3 (360) - recording any game online and posting pictures make this VERY special even if the solid gameplay was seen before with Halo 2, it still deserves the recognition as a great FPS package.
5. Virtua Fighter 5 (360) - The return of my favourite fighting game series is quite a brilliant conversion; fast, fluid and a deep combat system. And it has online play!
6. Mass Effect (360) - Misses a top 5 spot because it's a rather short RPG and infact didn't push the next generation envelope as much as I'd hoped, but STILL a distinct and superb title with much to explore and experience for sci-fi fans.
7. Orange Box (360) - While HL2 is old, it is still a classic sequel and it remains a template by which all other FPS follow. The rest of the disc is feature packed, with TF2 and Portal being pretty special too.
8. Crackdown (360) - Brilliant GTA superhero style game, very addictive and great art direction/upgrades/city design with interesting co-op play.
9. Colin McRae: DiRT (360) - My favourite racing game of 2007 is a rally game. I love it for the rallying, not so much the buggies and trucks. It's sheer exhilaration. RIP Colin :(
10. Lost Planet (360) - Early this year, the Mechs and the cold of Lost Planet had me hooked. The particle effects are quite nice too.

Honourable mentions to (in no particular order):
-Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (360) - for the offline gameplay.
-SWOS - few niggles stop this from being in top 10, but a decent arcade footie game.
-PGR4 - decent street racer, this time with bikes
-GRAW 2 A decent, slower paced tactical shooter
-The Darkness (Great Horror FPS)
-STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl - PC (intriguing mixture of FPS and RPG)
-SKATE (the best skateboarding game ever)
-NHL 2K8 (the best Ice hockey game since 2K3 - and in September I had thought EA's 08 was the king, but my fling with EA's game was superficial and I now stand corrected, it's 2K Sports all the way)
-All Pro Football 2K8 (the best American football game since 2K5)
-God Of War II - PS2 (excellent sequel)
-Okami - PS2 (superb art direction).

A bit 360 heavy this year:

2. COD4 (360) Purely for the multiplayer. Single player is too damn frustrating.
3. Crackdown (360)
4. GHII (360)
5. The Orange Box (360)
6. PGR 4 (360)

my top 10 games for this year are 360 games.

1. Halo 3 (360) - Without any doubt my favourite game of the year, it does everything right. the story gave me Goosebumps, the action was fluid and great and at moment tense, the multiplayer just brilliant the ability to record every match then take screens then to look at the statistics was unbelievable, even if it was done in Halo 2. (Master Chief is so cool)
2. PGR 4 (360) – Without a doubt my favourite racing game of the year. Looks amazing and has some really good new additions in the game but it also has a few things missing that make it a little disappointing but I still love this game and the weather system adds a new element to the game play love it.
3. Assassin's Creed (360) – it's a great game, it has some beautiful set piece action in it which will be very memorable. And with its facinating storyline leaving you asking questions and wanting more... great. it Has its flaws but still a great movie like gameplay.
4. Call Of Duty 4 (360) - A brilliantly addictive multiplayer shooter that brings back the kill cam and adds some interesting multiplayer modes in to the action. Even thou it has some irritating “random” grenade kills.
5. Crackdown (360) - Brilliant GTA style game with a superhero powers angle thrown in, very addictive and great cell shaded graphics. A little disappointed once you complete with nothing much for you to do but I love this game. Love the upgrades on the cars and the jumping from buildings.
6. Colin McRae: DiRT (360) - My favourite Rally game. I love it, its most probably the best one yet but could have been a lot better if it had a weather system in it like PGR 4. love it for the fast paced frantic driving to better your time over XBOX live. With Colin Mcrae being my favourite drive of all time. he will be missed I hope they still make more of his games
7. Orange Box (360) – A great package, 5 games and they are all great. Love it. With half life being a great game on its own and the additions of portals and team fortress both great games.
8. SWOS (XBLA) – Well what can I say loved it on the Amiga and still love it now it’s a great port keeps the game to it original routes. The game play has stood the test of time and I love it. If only the online was better. Gave you the same option as in the local multiplayer part.
9. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (360) – A great Football game one of the best of its kind looks great plays great. A little disappointing online. Also a few features missing but still a great play offline.
10. Virtual Tennis 3 (360) – Well what can I say it’s the best Virtual Tennis game yet and I love the arcade style play makes me believe I can play the game for real.

Honourable mentions to (in no particular order):
- Lost Planet (360) – great fun, looks great too.
- GRAW 2 (360) – again looks great, not a big improvement from the first though.
- BioShock (360) – great game nice graphics.
- Mass Effect (360) – haven’t played it yet but can tell it will be a great game.
- Scene it: Lights, Camera, Action (360) – well great package with a good presentation but a little disappointing that there is not enough questions, has no online mode, and the question seam to get repeated quite a bit.
- Worms (XBLA) - great game funny gameplay.
- Speedball 2 (XBLA) – classic Amiga game which again stays true to the original love it.
- Bomberman Live (XBLA) - great arcade game lots of fun off line and online and just classic gaming.
- Every extend extra extreme (XBLA) – great game very addictive lose time playing it very quick.
- LocoRoco Cocoreccho (PSP) – great an fun game. Very involving.
- Shadow Run (360) - great multiplayer gameplay, frantic action cool abilities.
- Wario Ware (wii) - real fun with a group of people. not a great single player game, like the rest of Wii stuff

Biggest Gaming Disappointment
- Forza 2 (360) - the graphic's are poor for next gen and the tracks were not that good plus there was not alot of upgrade options. could of been good but it aint.should of been an advance PGR4.

Most Disgraceful Moment Of Shame
- MS for letting Bungie go
- MS not buying Bizzare
- MS for not buying Bio Ware
(should have bought them, but allowed their creative freedom)

Original list and more detail: http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7739521&postcount=71

Changes: After downloading a couple of new track packs for Motorstorm I have been close to destroying my PS3 a number of times and the frustration has overcome the fun for the time being so that had to go. I have also since finished Uncharted and that is one excellent game, certainly the best looking game of this generation so far with only Heavenly Sword coming close in certain sections. Mass Effect just didn't grab me enough to want to play for any huge period of time so that doesn't make my top 10 I'm afraid although I do intend to revisit at some point and I just haven't had the time to spend on Mario Galaxy although I suspect from the brief goes I have had it would be high up there (probably top 3) somewhere probably edging Assassin's Creed out of the top 10. Tough list, been some good games in 2007, let's hope for more of the same in 2008. :)

EDIT: I would love to have squeezed Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3) in there somewhere as well but I've really not had the chance to play as much of it as I would like, but I certainly considered it.

Well i'm still in the process of adding things up at the moment, the results won't be posted until tomorrow evening when i get home at 7.30. In the meantime, you can continue to post or ammend your votes.

And here is mine:

01 Super Stardust HD - Just so addictive. I can still see me playing this occasionally for months to come.

02 Uncharted: Drakes Fortune - A fantastic adventure. If it had paced the game out with just a few more puzzles (taxing ones!) or two, it'd have probably been my first choice.

03 Call of Duty 4 - I've barely played the single player. It get's the nod based on the multiplayer side of things.

04 Resistance: Fall of Man - An enjoyable single player game. This is another one that really comes to life online. The front-end interface and online features are considerably better than CoD4 in many respects but it just gets pipped to the bronze spot.

05 Rock Band - Guitars. Drums. Singing. What's not to love?

06 God of War II - More of the same. But improved upon.

07 Bioshock - For the opening 5 or 6 hours of this, i think it was all set to be GotY but i tired of it little by little the further it went on and wished it would kindly end. Slightly. Still an 8.5 or 9/10 though.

08 Orange Box - This is here purely on the strength of Portal. If i had got round to starting Episode 1 and 2 i'm sure it would have been higher.

09 Heavenly Sword - More depth to it than some have given credit imo. I started on the hardest level and it took about 10-11 hours to complete, not bad for such a 'short' game. I've replayed many of the chapters too. The story and cut-scenes are amongst the best and most involving i've ever witnessed in a game.

10 Puzzle Quest - I've only had this since the New Year but i've only played Ratchet & Clank and Beats, since purchasing it. Rock Band, Orange Box, Mario Galaxy, CoD4 have all been left aside so far.

Such was the quality of this years releases that i couldn't find room in my top 10 for many other great games, so a few more honourable mentions then for:

Motorstorm - The game i bought the PS3 for. I certainly wasn't disappointed with the gameplay or online experience but it did lack a little in the features department and though there was an update to add time-trial/ghost options, by that point i was too involved in other titles.

Sega Rally - Arcade Perfect. Probably would have made my top 10 in many of the other voting years.

Warhawk - Sure the graphics weren't spectacular, but the scale of it was. Dogfighting especially.

Super Mario Galaxy & Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction - Too fantastic platformers and i'm determined i'll complete both but maybe i hark back for 2d with this kind of game because for some reason i've not enjoyed them quite as much as i've wanted too or felt i should do.

F1: Championship Edition - Well it's F1. It looks great (though i'd rather not have to do all my testing in Barcelona as the sun rises every time and i really enjoyed it.

And then there's Virtua Fighter 5 (it's not VF4: Evo though. :( ), Singstar, Okami - just not enough time in my life to do this justice!, flOw, LocoRoco Cocoreccho! etc etc.
