Merci Pour le Chocolat is directed by Claude Chabrol (2000) and it's available on Artificial Eye DVD. Video is anamorphic and in my opinion it is excellent. The aspect ratio in my telly is 16:9. Audio is AE's usual DD2.0. English subtitles are obligatory but not burnt into the print. They are very readable.

Has any one watched this DVD? Is there something missing in the upper part of the frame? Or is it just a psychological device used by the photographer (framing concentrates on protagonists while attending persons are not fully visible - hair is cut out in many frames)?

The edition is MK2 production and therefore there are many extras: making of, interviews, etc. Extras have no timing information.

Excellent film - saw it in the cinema when it came out. I don't recall it being in 'scope, so 16:9 ought to be around the correct aspect ratio.

BTW, does this disk sport English subs at all?

Yes it does - in feature and in extras. In that respect it is a usual Artificial Eye release - although of MK2 (i.e. Marin Karmitz - Kieslowski's Colors producer).

Yes, I've seen the DVD as well - very good film. A good suspense thriller that works without trying to pull any sensationalist twists. Didn't notice anything strange about the framing on the DVD. Good range of extras on the DVD. Well worth seeing.

Chabrol usually shoots his films in 1.66:1, but as I haven't seen Merci pour le chocolat I can't say if he's made an exception here or not. I'd be surprised if Artificial Eye didn't get this right anyway.

(I remember showing their films at University - the cans almost always had the ratio printed on the label.)
