Hi all,
Hope this is the right place for this posting?
A quick question then please. I have a PS3 and it's great for me overall.
With regard to playing standard DVD's (called SD DVD's now?) will my PS3 upscale my DVD's to my Panny 42" Plasma (model no.TH42PX70)?
Will I notice a marked improvement if I were to play my SD DVD's through a new DVD player that upscales to my TV and has an HDMI output? My old DVD's already look pretty good on the PS3...is it worth getting a new player such as the cheap Toshiba £60 player currently available?
Sorry if my terminology/knowledge is making my questions less than clear, but I hope you get my meaning.

Yes, I'm using mine to upscale my R2 SD DVD's

I'd say that the PS3 is adequate for DVD, yes. The only thing that counts against it is the locked region coding, but if you're UK all the way then I wouldn't bother getting a standalone DVD player.

Ok cheers guys.
That is to be honest the answer I was looking for :n0rty:
I shall continue as I am then. Also, 95+% of my library is Region 2 anyway.

God no. The PS3 has much better scaling abilities than any DVD player under the £100 mark. The PS3 is up there with the expensive stuff in terms of how well it upscales.

Don't you have to ensure you set the 'upscale' option on though

Will check my settings again tomorrow.
Any links that go through all the PS3 settings about?
Many thanks so far guys. I'm really pleased with my set up...it suits me just fine

Yes, but once it's on, it's on for good

It is an excellent upscaler, I'm more than happy with it.
And I'm the opposite to you Nick; probably 90% of my DVDs are Region 1, so I bought a US PS3.
The PS3 is a good upscaler but my laptop is better (vga conection)

the online guide is here

the upscaling stuff is under the settings heading.

Surely you just leave it as 'Normal' which is the factory default anyway?

Why does that matter? Surely you must have a high-res television if you are concerned about upscaling anyway?
