As there is talk about in the Main Wii Thread i think it deserves at a thread of its own.

Thanks to Adam, here are some videos - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27613.html

The Shooting one is really cool and can't wait for Mario with a Shotgun !!

It's an historical event to rival the fall of the Berlin wall and man landing on the moon.

Haven't got round to playing this yet - but really looking forward to it.

Bit :( that the "online" aspect is only leaderboards/records rather than proper competing but at least there won't be any lag. And online leaderboards can be just as competitive.

IGN gave it 7.9 whilst recognising that there was a fair bit of repetition (eg not much difference between 100m, 400m, etc, etc) which is a pretty respectable score IMO.

The swimming video on the Gametrailers site, showing each player doing a different stroke with the Wiimote/nunchuk in the medley event looked very nice.

Have to say everything about this game screams average to me, the videos i've seen for it don't look that exciting. I hope to be proven wrong though and look forward to some impressions from folks here.

Saying that Super Mario Galaxy's out next week so that's the biggy for me!

This is the first title I have pre-ordered since buying the Mario Soccer game!

But I'll still buy it for it being near christmas, ideal for party play. Shame perhaps it wont be the polished game I was expecting from sega.

The 1UP review sounds very odd - particularly slagging of the table tennis event which other reviews have raved about saying it is nowhere near as good as any of the number of other tennis games on Wii ?? And the criticism of the archery event was very :?:

Started playing this last night ... on the leaderboard for 100m freestyle and javelin already [ but I think I got lucky in the javelin ;) ]

Having played it, 1UP's criticism of the numerous instruction screens is far too harsh since they can be skipped once you know the controls.

It's a good game if you accept it for what it is. It was never going to be an SMG , Zelda or MP3 beater but then it was never intended to be. For Track & Field nuts, like myself, it's great. Only played single player so far - but it will be the first game stuck in the Wii the next multi-player session I have.

For me - I'm still trying to work out how to get the hammer throw to work properly

I have to say I was surprised that it got panned by the critics - I've only played it two players and honestly the only critiscm I can levy against it as a "Track and Field" game , is when you use your Mii character it introduces both players as "meeee".

I've only played it two player so far - but I think its a cracker, and its great for tactical development of the birds wrist action ;)

Got mine today
I played it. It looks simple but its very hard and you could argue fiddly. I wonder if it will take away from the fun. The other fustration is having to play single player to unlock more multiplayer games. This is not the sort of game I would want to play on my owe.

Anyone else having connection errors when trying to upload their records?

Cannot remember exactly what the error was but it bagan with a 6 and alluded to the connection dropping out whilst accessing tables (i think)

EDIT: This was the error

Error Code: 98020

There appears to be a temporary network issue with our severs. Please wait and retry your connection again.

Hope they get them running soon!

Several of the events are very hard, but on the whole it's a good fun game...not too sure how much logevity it will have as a one player game (the online records are nigh on impossible to beat...8.5 seconds in the 100m, I have managed 9.5(ish).

The high jump stops at 2.6m, I was on a roll and somewhat disappointed when it just stopped.

I have beaten half the advanced circuit so far (winning gold)...

Every now and again (especially in the swimming) the controls seem to lack response and you end up floundering.

Table tennis is not the great!

Still, all in all a good game! My arms are aching this morning...glad no one was recording me playing it last night, I must of looked a right herbert!

Believe me Galaxy is absolutely worth it, one of the best games ever.

The great thing being even if you don't have enough time to play a lot, Galaxy is set up in such a great way that you can just do a star or two a night or whenever you fancy. Just superb.

Played this pretty briefly the other night in multiplayer, and overall was pretty impressed. Good to see that they have at least tried to add some variation into each event, such that the swimming events for example use a variety of stroke styles depending on the character used.

The track & field events appear to be pretty solid across the board, whilst the other events i tried were more hit-and-miss - fencing was a LOT of fun, whilst table tennis was pretty dismal, and skeet was fairly dull.

Overall, it'll make a nice companion game to trusty old Summer Games on the N64 for boozy gaming nights.

Digitiser reviewd it yesterday and only gave it 5 out of 10. The table tennis came in for particular critiscm as did the similarty between many events.

Shame the Wii doesn't have demo's like the 360....:(

Steve Parkinson
30-11-2007, 11:59
The table tennis really is very poor from my brief experience of it. There is little scope for long rallies, as the smash shots are very hard to return, and at other times you just seem to miss shots for no apparent reason.

As for the similarity between a lot of events, that's pretty much par for the course on track & field style button-bashing games. The one thing i would say is that, because of the flick-and-twist mechanics of jumping, throwing etc. there seems to be little potential for honing techniques or perfecting the minutiae of timing to achieve records. I set a new WR on long jump with my second ever attempt simply by nailing the flick jump pretty much accidentally. I then had a very similar experience with the javelin, throwing over 100m with my third throw.

I suppose it depends what you want out of it. It's not really a serious button-bashing game (as serious as that sort of game can get), but i would suspect that it'll make a long-term companion to Wii Sports in my collection in terms of pick-and-play fun.

I'd like to know that too.

I somehow managed to get the hammer lighting up in blue (if you know what I mean) but then released at the wrong time.

The hammer throw is such an infuriating event.

I read that beforehand, but then managed over 60m with each of the three throws i had on the one time i've played it, the final one going nearly 80m. I didn't really understand the problem personally.

For me ... it is I can't work out the motion needed on the Wiimote. Whoever I am playing as never seems to speed up no matter how fast I 'rotate' the Wiimote.

Do just move it in a circle or hold it upright, keeping the bottom of the Wiimote in the same position but the top goes round in a circle.

I can easily understand how that probably didn't make sense.

As far as i remember, i held it vertically, and just rotated my wrist in a tight circle. As if i were twirling a ribbon i guess (which i often do, of course).

It seems that, as with most Wii games, the best results are gained from just doing a really compact version of the prescribed action, especially when it's about building up speed through motion.

Is this the #1 xmas game?

Someone must have underestimated demand. The game is sold out everywhere. Looked all over for it today but couldn't find it :( I guess it's been sold with a lot of the Wiis that finally started appearing in stock, maybe Sega didn't know they would arrive.

Bit annoying as wanted it for my brother as it looks like a game everyone could play on xmas. Is there enough content to still justify getting it at full price if its only going to be played by one or two people?

This game (as indeed all Wii games) look like so much fun. I used to venehmently support the Xbox 360 due to its online capability but what with people saying that its full of thicko americans has put me off somewhat.

Whereas the Wii seems to be the real revolution in the console war.

Onto Master Class in the circuits, been playing those mainly. Find Luigi is great if high jumping / pole vaulting is your choice! For High Jump and Pole Vault the WRs are mine :)

I do like Dream Table Tennis too - much better than the real stuff.

Can't for the life of me get anywhere decent in the long jump; not much better in triple jump.

I know. It's quite revolutionary how Microsoft take your money and then XBOX Live doesn't work over the period when most people have new games they want to play.

Right up there with the Dyson that is. ;)

Yes and no.

I was playing this with my nephew over xmas and was in a similar situation.

Some of the events are just for the remote. Other are optional (although my nephew was beating me on the those using the nunchuckers:shrug:) Some (javalin) you can swap the nunchucker over between turns.

Great game. Finished the circuits last night then had a few goes on Javelin - got my throws sorted now, topping out at ~ 112 M.

Anyone fancy posting some records? My 4 by 100 M relay is just a new record too (37.something).

Found out high jump / pole vault have max heights you can tackle; annoying as they're easy to get to.

They unlock after completing some of the circuits on higher difficulty (can't remember which exactly, but they some of the early ones).

entrywound
13-02-2008, 10:14
They also get unlocked without doing any of the circuits. I've only completed 2 beginner circuits, and have all events unlocked apart from 3 or 4 I think. I think if you set world records or win gold medals, more stuff gets unlocked, but I could be wrong!

rbullivant
14-02-2008, 09:21
You unlock all the events after you unlock all but about two circuits, you unlock the events when you unlock the circuit with the event in it (normally have to place or win the previous circuit)

Had a quick search for this on Google but couldn't find any info. Played this quite a bit when I got it and unlocked quite a few of the events and this was saved to my save game.

Went to go into it on Sunday after not playing for 4-5 days and the save data had just gone?!!? Anyone else experienced this or am I doing something stupid? Tried it with both controllers just in case that had some affect on it.

Really don't want to have to go through all the events unlocking them again - my arms were sore for days last time!!
