It's for the UK version - The advantages over the US version include:
UK version is 5 discs, while the USA version is only 4 discs.
USA version is shortened and presented in 1080i (BBC-version is in 1080p).
Original UK version (530 minutes). Includes 90 minutes of footage not seen in the USA broadcast version. Including the original narrator Sir David Attenborough (not Sigourney Weaver, as in the US broadcast version).
USA Version - AVC MPEG-4 compression.
UK Version - VC-1 compression.

What's the difference between this and the US release? The OP talks about the US release and the US broadcast (which is kind of irrelevant) which used Sigorney Weaver but the US release was Attenborough
The OP lists the differences between the US and UK versions :?:
UK = 5 discs inc 90mins not available for the US, 1080p, VC-1 and Attenborough
US = 4 discs, 1080i, AVC and Sigourney Weaver.

Not on my US HD-DVD version.

I did this before someone pointed out that the US version is avaiable for the same price from amazon.com and it's region free. So you get better VFM from the UK version between the two.
The HD DVD version of Planet Earth is available at the Virgin Megastore website for £33.95.

not on my US bluray either, the OP seems to quoting differences between the US broadcast version and the UK BluRay. The US BluRay is 1080p and features Attenborough. It doesn't have the 5th disk of extras though.
Fair enough, didn't realise it was the US broadcast version Sigourney was on.
Had held off ordering the HD-DVD from the US for that reason, now I find out I could have gone ahead
Stuck an order in with Virgin now anyways.
either way it's a bargain, absoloutely fantastic set.

Like I said:
The OP talks about the US release and the US broadcast
Clearly I'm asking for the difference between the UK release and the US release rather than the difference between the UK release and the US release and the US broadcast. The US broadcast isn't relevant here, we just want to know the difference (if any) between the two released versions.
For example:
Includes 90 minutes of footage not seen in the USA broadcast version. Including the original narrator Sir David Attenborough (not Sigourney Weaver, as in the US broadcast version).
Which is all nice and well but it doesn't matter what was in the US broadcast, only in the US release. Like I said, they used Attenborough for the US release and I'm sure there wasn't any missing footage compared to the original version
Amazon (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000SKNIWE/thedvdforums-21) Have it for £33.98 (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000SKNIWE/thedvdforums-21) if you'd rather order from them - not a lot of difference!
I noticed this in my local Sainsburys instore this morning for £32.97 I think.
