I think this'd be the right forum for bringing this up, if not feel free to move it and accept my apologies.

About 3 weeks ago I sent an application form off with a cheque and a letter of recommendation from my university, I wanted to know that it got there so sent it recorded delivery first class.

After a week of checking the website for confirmation of delivery I called and complained, and two weeks later I get a letter from Royal Mail apologising because they've lost my letter.

Fortunately I cancelled the cheque a week ago, got another form and had to go to the trouble of getting a new letter of recommendation.

Royal Mail sent me the letter but in the two pages of excuses and apologies they seemed reluctant to offer to compensate me.

Anybody been in a similar situation, do I have any right to compensation (i think it;s up to £27 or something)? Any idea what i should do? Surely at the very least I'm entitled to my money back for sending it recorded?

Any help appreciated

Rik

The mail system is ***** at the moment, i've had a few parcels going missing as well. Rizel

Get a lost mail form from the post office and claim for postage and the cheque cancellation fee. No idea if they'll stump up, ie I don't think consequential loss is covered, but they sorted my claim out for two lost parcels very quickly.

Bw warned though that if you ring up to complain they always seem to offer you a book of first class stamps as compensation.

They'll offer you a book of 12 1st class stamps. Thats it.
What annoys me the most is they dont seem to be held responsible for anything, it seems like they can do what the hell they want with anything and the customer has no recourse. Recorded delivery isnt even a guaranteed delivery service, just means it gets a signature.
Special Delivery costs in the region of £3.50 + the postage which is scandless, even then they try ever way possible of dissolving themselves from any ownership.

ironically today i got a reply from the recorded letter I sent, but the royal mail still seem to have lost it and never got a sig. I phoned to complain and accepted the stamps as i couldn't be bothered with the hassle

but if I sent a DVD recorded like i often do will they not offer me any cash? Anyone ever made a claim like that? What about special delivery? I always felt safe that at least i'd get my £500 if they lost it but would they try and weasle out of it?

thanks for the info guys

Recorded, IMO, is a waste of money. Standard post - 1st & 2nd class - are covered for 27 quid just as well, with a free COP. I had 2x 2nd class parcels go missing and the PO paid my claim in full within 2 weeks, with no trouble whatsoever. Sure, they shouldn't have gone missing, but I was very impressed with the way they dealt with it. Of course, if it's over the 27 quid threshold, then the only option is Special Del, at least it's guarenteed for noon the next day and by what I've read from the posties on here, Special Del. is treated differently to regular post, so there's less chance of it going AWOL.

I had another forum member send a DVD to me recorded.
It never turned up - even after the postie left a card when i wasn't in - it disappeared by the time i got to the P.O

The forum member (no names) was supposed to fill out a claim form , as he sent it, but has since declined to reply! he's a green trader too!

Don't hold your breath :(

tpr007 - To be fair, failing to get your compo is down to the shameful behaviour of the Green Trader, not the fault of the PO.

Come on, name & shame!!

really - the DVD was in the posties hands, and when i wasn't in he left a card = fair enough. Then it never returned to the PO, and after going in for a couple of days it disappeared.!!!
I did phone the PO and they sent some stamps (cheeky ********rs) but i explained and they said the claim would need to be sent in by the sender.

thats where it went tits up for a second time!

to be (slightly) fair - this trader is hardly ever here recently, as i have his profile, and check it to see when his last posts were! although, it seems he has had the chance to get back in touch - its been nearly 2 months since he sent it!
His last post was on the 8th Jan - so i'll give him 1 more chance to come back before I let the mods know his word is as good as chip paper!
