What's the deal with Special Edition of Dogma that apparently has just a brown cover with word 'Dogma' on it? Looking at all the retail sites it has an illustrated cover with all the characters on it!

Was there a limited edition version of the SE or something?

The illustrated cover at the retail sites is the cardboard slip cover that goes over the amaray case which contains the brown cover with just the word Dogma on it. So, as far as I know, all the SE's come with both :)

Hope that helps

BTW, was anyone else really disappointed with this film. Clerks was a very good film (clever), Mallrats great (not as good as clerks), Chasing amy (still not seen), this (his worst so far - too disjoited and surreal), then Jay and Silent Bob (his best yet - was soooooooooooooooo funny!!).

I don't think Dogma is his best, and it was certainly too long and tried to explain itself too much, but there was still a lot in it that was very funny. Jay's rant at the end is just brilliant!

I vote for Dogma being the best!

IMHO Dogma was really clever writing, much wittier than Clerks. I'm still surprised Jay was actually able to pull off a really good performance all the way through the film.

No doubt - Dogma was very clever. Though I don't know anything about the production of the film, assuming KS wrote it, he must have knowledge of biblical proportions!
Only problem was, trying to get across all the facts and make amusing observations about them and the hypocracy etc. got in the way of the dialogue making it stinted. It was like "hold on until I say this long, overly complicated speech" every 5 minutes, getting in the way of the characters' interactions.
Still a highly original and enjoyable film tho :D

didn't Smith have a catholic upbringing hence the religious stuff. i think maybe he's bitter! I love Dogma and don't try and compare it to the others, in fact I try not to compare any of them as they are all quite different films. I haven't seen JSBST yet but i've got it preordered!

problem with Dogma is that the scripts a great laugh out funny read but on film it kinda dies because of Smiths lack of directional skills and his reluctance to cut the dialouge down so the story moves faster.

I quite like Dogma, but I can definitely see its flaws.

There are too many secondary characters. Salma Hayek's character could have been completely removed... she only existed to give an elaborate speech about the roles of women in the Bible. The same goes for Chris Rock's character, Rufus... he's only there to make a point about Jesus being black, to add racial politics to the many themes the movie is already bursting-to-the-seams with. Most of the other characters have huge rants about something or other, and to be honest, some or all of their rants could be shortened or removed completely.

I could tell from the beginning that the film wasn't written or directed well, because it had to introduce characters by putting their name on the screen. I thought, "Why is this written so badly that the film has to visually tell us who the characters are, rather than finding out through dialogue?".

Then there are several basic film errors that no director should make. You know the part where Metatron talks to Bethany at night, then she wakes up the next moring, then all of a sudden it is night again? Very bad editing that leads to confusion... I didn't know if she was opening the abortion clinic that morning, or whether an entire day had passed. All that was needed was a daytime transition, but the film failed there.

Also, many scenes have continuity errors. I'm not talking about glasses moving around on the table. I'm talking about actors having one expression on their face in one shot, then when it cuts to the next shot, the actor has a completely different expression on their face. Watch Linda Fiorentino in the tequila restaurant scene, and you'll see what I mean.

Then the acting is just plain bad. This is a criticism of all Kevin Smith films. I feel that Smith writes excellent dialogue on the page, but it cannot be spoken by actors. When actors speak Smith's dialogue, it comes out very scripted and unnatural. Jason lee is cool, but his speech near the end of the film was just awful. Linda Fiorentino doesn't sound sincere or natural for a single moment. Salma Hayek's performance makes me cringe. The only *good* performance in the film is by Jason Mewes.

Eeek. I've totally trashed this film, but I actually like it, despite its flaws. The film makes very worthy points, and has many funny scenes. I just think it would have made a better book than a movie.

I really enjoyed this film. I'm sure I read that Kevin Smith made this film to glorify catholicism (it was in empire a couple of years ago, if anyone really wants I can go and look it up). I haven't seen any of his other films yet (I have clerks but haven't watched it yet). Some have said that it would have been better if not for teh overly descriptive dialogue, but I'd much rather have had that than be left confused about catholic dogma of which I know nothing about

I believe he wrote it before Clerks was even filmed (note the "Jay and Silent Bob will return in Dogma" in the credits :)), but was put on the back burner until filming it became viable (the script probably went through a lot of revision too ;)).

Just an FYI - they're selling Buddy Christ figures in several branches of Forbidden Planet.

Catholicism - Wow! :D
