View Full Version : Whatever happened to EDGE not giving 10s?
There's another one in the latest issue (182).
I shan't spoil it by saying what for...
D.
I've already mentioned what it's for on the game's thread
To be honest though, fully deserved IMHO. As a package it is stunning.
What game?
Metroid Prime 3?

Relatively speaking, they still haven't dished out that many. Whether you agree with them or not is of course a wholly separate matter...
Super Mario 64
Gran Turismo
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Halo
Half-Life 2
Halo 3
Orange Box

What do you mean? Where you under the impression that they had some kind of no 10 policy? Even Famitsu gives 40's from time to time
I can't believe we're spoiler tagging review scores!
"Whatta twist, all the way through they had me thinking it was an 8 then at the end they pulled the rug out from under me and gave it a 6 in a move worthy of Hitchcock!

Is that all they've ever given?
I suppose Orange Box deserves more if HL2 got a 10 as well :)

Super Mario 64 was the only game I saw that got 100% (as apposed to 10/10) in a magazine, that might have been in Official Nintendo Magazine though :)

I know but don't they always do that in EDGE threads?

You also can't argue with the value of the Orange Box and its a quality product! More deserving than Halo 3.
I think the poster is commenting on the recent spate of 10 scores, I guess they gave Halo 3 one last month, the one before that was a few years ago

I used to get ONM around the time of the N64 and I don't recall them giving anything 100% (although Ocarina of Time came close - 97% or 98%). Plus it would've given them nowhere to go in a magazine that became almost exclusively N64 games if a release title got 100%.
I think it got maybe a 94%, but then this was decreased to 92% and then to 90% (or something like that) when it started to show its age and games like Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Donkey Kong were released.
Mario64 was the pinnacle of platform games. It deserved the highest marks possible. There was several afterwards that tried to copy the style but non have ever been as good.

Fair enough, I wasn't sure. In that case it was N64 Magazine (which used to be Super Play and then went on to be something else), as they were the two I used to buy.
Edit: NGC Magazine and then NGamer.
Actually, it may be worth speculating whether or not EDGE will give another 10 score this year.
We have quite a few potential contenders ready for release this year:
Crysis
CoD4
Mario Galaxy
Rock Band

As much as I loved Mario 64 I'd say Jak and Daxter topped in most respects (not the 2 sequels though)

That's a bit like saying Oasis are better than the Beatles.

lol...
I think Mario 64 was the closest I felt to 'next gen'...
I couldn't believe how good a game could be in 3d...
And all the moves he could do...

I don't remember the Beatles having infuriating camera controls

The controls for mario 64 are about as good as it can get in a platform game, after playing it for a while you had perfect control over the little fella. All the games that followed really just tried to copy it, some were good, but none were close to mario 64.

Ther'e nothing wrong with the camera on Mario 64. Considering it was essentially the first 3D platformer it still kicks the ass, camera-wise, of pretty much everything out there. See how much Nintendo cacked it up for Sunshine, for example.

I'd say that, generally, despite all the advances in computer game technology the camera is one of the hardest to get right and still something that some games (non-linear movement in wild directions - mainly platformers) continue to struggle with.
Considering that Mario 64 is over ten years old (1996, right?), that camera is almost a miracle of gaming genius.

Yeah all those scores are good with me.
