The real quandary is whether to go with the 400D now or start saving and wait for the 450D in Feburary(ish)

I'm saving for a D300... :-)
seriously though, that is a great price if you are after a canon. I don't see the cashback listed on Amazon though - I thought it had run out? Obviously not though eh?!

I'll maybe let others who know more than I do elaborate, but I'd say no contest - 400D every time.

Hmm... not too sure about that. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the Canon is a great camera but from what I've heard the kit lenses are supposed to be awful.
I doubt a layman like me would notice the difference between a good and bad lens though.
Oh, these guys rate the Nikon highly:

Damn! Bought my 400D about a month ago. I coulda saved £60 :(
Now I wish I bought the Pentax K10D
From what I have read in the past there is not a huge amount of difference between the d40x and the 400d. Two point to note are that the nikon can't do exposure bracketing which will annoy some people and also the range of lenses that can be used with the d40x is limited as it does not have an internal focusing motor.
Before making your mind up though go to a shop and hold both. The hand grip on the 400d is quite small and does not suit everyone. Its all personal choice so I would deffinately suggest going and irritating some one in jessops for a while, then of course go home and buy online cheaper...

Very true, but i wonder what the specs would be of the 450D? its like what can they add? they cant add to much as it would approach the 40D.
I suppose a 12mp sensor is a must, maybe up it to 5fps as well?
450D already? When did the 400D come out?
Anyway, try both the Canon & Nikon cameras and buy your favourite, otherwise you'll be constantly waiting for the next thing around the corner and not get any photography done at all.

Might want to take a short trip to the USA - the D300 over there is ~£900 against £1299 over here.

The Nikon is missing depth-of-field preview and some other stuff. On top of that, the 400D has the 30D 9-point autofocus system which is far superior to the D40x.

I'll be getting mine from Hong Kong. I get pretty much all my stuff from there.
:)

It's not awful, just a bit average and certainly much worse than the Canon L lens I own (:D). It's not a bad kit lens considering the price, and is reasonably sharp if you stop it down to about f/8 or so. Wide open it's not as good, but if you want a lens with a big aperture for low light stuff just add a 50mm f/1.8 for about £60.

Agreed, HK prices are excellent. Lowest price I could find for Canon's 70-200 f/4 L in the UK was around £550, but I got it for £330 in HK with international warranty.

I was about to take the plunge but it's now gone up to £418
I know it's not much but it's the principle!
I did a lot of research into this recently. Ended up getting a D40X (well actually I paid for a D40 and the shop gave me a D40X by mistake!!). All the reviews will say that the D40X and the 400D are neck and neck. 400D might have an edge if you have lots of Canon lenses already and want to re-use them.
for info I already had a Canon film SLR (350) but liked the look and feel of the Nikon.
If you don't have ambitions to be a professional but want a decent step up from a compact then a Nikon D40 (not X) would fit the bill given it's lower cost. It's 6 megapixel but that is fine - when are you going to print A0??? Don't get swayed by the number of megapixels.
This website is very helpful - the guy has loads of cameras but uses his Nikon D40 more than any other:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2007-05-what-camera.htm
ps - I'm not knocking the Canon - it's a great camera!

I would take anything Ken Rockwell says with a pinch of salt! :) You certainly won't get an unbiased, fact based appraisal of the two cameras. He is a nikon man through and through.
He does have a very interesting site though and has some great opnions on nikon kit.

Yeah, I agree that his views can be somewhat biased and at times pig-headed but he does have a more detailed insight into the Nikon range than some camera reviews might offer.
I bought the Nikon based on a mix of reviews, the features I was looking for and also the look and feel of the camera. Holding the camera and playing with a few settings in the shop was important. And the yellow Nikon strap is cooler than the EOS (IMO)!!!

I base ALL of my camera purchases on the strap colour. ;)
Got one at the 399 price the other day, rude not to really :) Just a shame I didn't have it a couple of weeks ago, some good pictures from Skye with my digital compact, which could have been stunning with a proper camera..

I've been wanting to make the move to SLR for some time now and need to learn about the different lenses, but does this camera make for a good beginners rig or should I be looking at something else? Am on holiday in a few weeks and would love to have a better camera for it.

Either the Canon or the Nikon are perfect first DSLR's.
However there are some downsides to the Nikon because without an internal focus motor you cannot use prime (fixed focus) lenses in auto mode, only manual. Other, older zoom lenses are also out, which means you have to spend a lot on new compatible lenses.
If it were me buying again today, and having owned the Canon 350d and my current Nikon d70s, I would plump for a second-hand nikon - a D50 or D70 or if your budget can stretch, a D80. All of these are fantastic cameras
The touble with DSLR's is that they can turn into a money pit. Once you get into photography you end up spending far too much on lenses, and tripods and bags, and filters, and other toys. The camera body tends to be merely the tip of the iceberg!

The mans right, my 350D body cost £450 nearly two years ago but since then I have spend over 1K on lenses (all at bargain prices too), £150 on an external flash, god knows how much on several filters and two tripods... The bill must come to nearly £1300, nearly three times the cost of the orignal camera. I expect most people who have had both film and digital SLRs will be able to tell a similar story...

...and that's when you leave it all at home because it's too big and heavy to carry! Not so bad as a few years ago when I got into photography with film and would have 2 or 3 camera bodies (colour slide, b/w film maybe colour neg too) and then I started carrying medium format too! :help:
Interesting prices. Out here in 'tax free' UAE the prices on many cameras are the same or even more than the best prices back in UK although it's standard practice to give you a manufacturer case and a memory card all in. Canon 400D is about £430 here! (where has all that VAT saving gone?!)
I regularly use a Nikon D80 and a D200. D80 is really nice and does most of what anyone could want. D40/x is nice but restrictive on that lens issue. Olympus E510 anyone? Meant to be be best bang for the buck.
However there are some downsides to the Nikon because without an internal focus motor you cannot use prime (fixed focus) lenses in auto mode, only manual.
Not so.
There are many fixed focal length ( prime ) lenses you can use on the D40(x) that do not require the body motor.

I think jessops usually include the cashback with their prices, so it's really £429 - £50 cashback.
