Finally got round to updating. Apologies as I have been busy with work, hols and life in general. This will be the first of many as I have free internet again. I will try to update once a fortnight.

Cheers Dave.

Hey!

I have checked this with threadkiller so this thread should be on a sticky. The point of this thread is to answer those common questions, which come up everyweek about potential dvd releases. I'll keep this updated (with your help) so whenever there are developments we can add them (cool ain't it!). So for all you newbies, here are the answers to those questions that you just can't wait to ask (TBH who can blame you!);

Two great resource for release dates and other information are

The DVD Times (http://www.thedvdtimes.co.uk)

and

The R2 Project (http://www.r2-dvd.org)

STAR WARS ORIGINAL TRILOGY

This isn't coming out anytime soon :(
Lucas is too busy filming the new ones to work on the extra material that he wants to put in. It looks like after Episode 3! An alternative is the laserdisc collection or the vcds. The official VCD can be found at Coolashop (http://www.coolashop.com)or Coolvcd (http://www.coolvcd.com)
I own the vcds and they are video quality. I know they are the SEs (Greedo shoots Han first) but they are good as a stop gap solution.

On the bright side TPM is already out and AOTC is on preorder for 11/11/02 (r2) with these specs,

Audio commentary from writer/director George Lucas, producer Rick McCallum, editor and sound designer Ben Burtt, visual effects supervisors Pablo Helman, John Knoll & Ben Snow and animation supervisor Rob Coleman offering personal insights into the making of the film
8 deleted scenes created for this DVD release with introductions from George Lucas, Rick McCallum and Ben Burtt
'From Puppets to Pixels': an all-new full-length documentary that tracks the revolution in digital character animation, featuring the creation of the digital Yoda, Dexter Jettster and more!
'State of the Art: The Previsualization of Episode II': an all-new documentary featuring never-before-seen animatics of Episode II
'Films Are Not Released: They Escape': an all-new documentary in which Ben Burtt and his team explain the process of creating the sound for Episode II
3 behind-the-scenes featurettes respectively exploring Episode II's storyline, action scenes and love story
All 12 parts of the web documentaries 'Making Episode II'
'Across The Stars' music video from composer John Williams
Theatrical teaser and launch trailers
12 TV spots

INDIANA JONES

cheers Jimmy_b!!!!
According to theforce.net the Indy dvds are in the works, with Raiders out this year (4th Q) and the other 2 coming 2003 and 2004 respectuvely. SS will not be doing a commentary :(
Check out jimmy's post for a direct link to the article. UPDATE: Still no sign unfortunately. I'll leave the above up for a while and see what happens!

Indy4 seems to be coming a reality, and is in preproduction. Check out cinescape for articles on it (there are some very minor spoilers). Aparently Ford wants Calista Flockhart (his gf) to star.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

OUT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on r4. Nice set and good extras. Well worth the cash!

R1 - out 17/12/02 and I don't like the packaging. The preorder price is around the $50 mark.

R4 - Around $60au (incl P&P). The packaging is pretty groovy and it is out now!

I have gone for R4 (there are a good 10 hours of extras and it is a lot cheaper.

The official website for the DVD release of the trilogy is now up - OfficialBTTF (http://www.bttfmovie.com)

Check out
BTTF (http://www.bttf.com/dvd)
for updates (and you can follow all of the gossip and disappointments since 1997!!!!)

GOODFELLAS

One I have been looking for! Looking at a autumn release for this on R1. Cheers for the info "thing with no name."

RED DWARF

No official release date for the film as yet, but it is being filmed as we speak.

The dvds are winging their way to us. Season 1 will be released in a double dvd set for an rrp of £19.99 on the 04/11/02 with 2 coming Feb 2003!!

dvd package;
Cast and crew commentary
Original BBC Series One trailer
to Z of Red Dwarf
Extended and deleted scenes
Model effects shots (original 35mm)
Smeg-ups (Series One)
Japanese dubbed clip
Easter egg
Audio elements

The first disc is all eps, the 2nd extras. THESE EPS ARE NOT(!!!!!!!) THE REMASTERED ONES :)

Other release dates:
R4 same as R2 (nov and feb)
R1 seies 1 Feb 25 2003 (possibly series 2 but they don't know yet)
no news on any differences with extras but with simultaneous r4/2 releases might help with the price!!

(info taken from http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/deck01/dv...red_120702.html where they also have a small pic of the s2 cover art!)

www.reddwarf.co.uk is great for updates on the RD movie and dvds.

LOTR

04/11/02, an Driector's cut will also be released which will include even more exclusive features, and on 4 discs! The Special Edition in November will be available to buy bundled with the film for £24.99 or as a stand alone disc for a cheaper price for people who already own the film (like The Matrix Revisited)."

pbenstead posted that the r4 will be out on the 26/08/02 then an SE will follow on the 26/11/02

The second release will be 4 DISCS and will include an extra 30 minutes footage, most of that from Lorien (sp?).

NB: the BBFC lists 1m16s of cuts on the extras for LOTR extended edition. Between that and the lack of DTS, the UK R2 edition is to be avoided.

Not sure if you want to add this or not!

December's DVD Review mentions that Steven Speilberg is interested in making Indy 4 once he has finished with the re-release of ET. He has said that this is dependant on Harrison Ford and George Lucas and that he wants input from both for the DVD's.

Bearing in mind the work load of Uncle George it's anyones guess how long we might have to wait or which will come first!

finally the sticky of all stickies!! :D

just one suggestion, how about changing the title to something like

"The Star Wars and Indiana DVD issue.. + others"

of course a bit long in the mouth, and i know someone else should come up with something more catchy, but you get the idea? i think that way newcomers will spot the thread more easily??

Glad to see this has become a sticky, which was something I suggested a few times last week with several BOB threads within a few days of each other.

Will anyone asking for release dates on the above titles get hung, drawn and quartered if they ask in future? ;)

www.Theforce.net has a snippet about the Indiana Jones DVD here (http://www.theforce.net/holonet/index.html#14053). Sounds like Spielberg will not be doing a commentary for it :( but at least it sounds like the wheels of production might be starting to move for these discs (finally), even if it is just in a planning stage @ the mo. :)

A bit more info from digitalbits...

Now then... this is UNOFFICIAL. We've been told by various sources that at least SOME work has been done to get Raiders of the Lost Ark closer to release on DVD. Word is that the films would be released one per year, as 2-disc special editions. And our friends at The Force.net have received an interesting report on this subject. Apparently, director Steven Spielberg paid a surprise visit to a film class at USC last week. During a Q&A with the students, he mentioned that he doesn't do audio commentaries for his work because he thinks they detract from the film experience (which we already knew). More importantly, however, he revealed that he recently turned down a request from George Lucas to record commentaries for the DVD release of the Indiana Jones films. Which confirms that at least some serious thought is being given by Lucasfilm to releasing them. Does that mean we can expect to see Raiders on disc in 2002? We'll certainly let you know if we hear anything more substantial on this note.

Band Of Brothers:-

After a bit of amatuer detective work on my part, I managed to work out that Band of Brothers would be a Warner Brothers Release in the UK. (i.e. HBO is part of Warner Brothers, who have released previous HBO product such as "The Sopranos").

I then mailed various DVD pages to so that somebody in the know might talk to Warner Brothers. As a result, R2 Project have confirmed that it's Warner Brothers, is coming THIS YEAR, but not yet!!!!

So let's get badgering Warner Brothers NOW!!!!!!

Update for BTTF:

From thedigitalbits.com
Just thought you all might like to know: we've checked in with more of our sources, who have learned that Universal is now targeting December for the release of The Back to the Future Trilogy on DVD. No word yet on whether there will be a theatrical re-release this summer first, but it's possible.

Update for LOTR:
From thedigitalbits.com
Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has confirmed that he's doing an audio commentary for the DVD (probably the 4-disc version that streets in November). In fact, he's probably working on it as we speak. He also confirmed that he's adding 30 minutes back into the cut of the film for the disc.

EDIT:

BTTF is being reported to be released in Germany in July. This comes direct from Universal Germany.

So this is going to be a 4 disc SE... wow, I thought it was only going to be 3.

If he's adding 30 minutes back in to a 180 minute movie, doesn't this make it 3 and a half hours!! Wow! Butt-numb-a-thon!

Incidentally, won't this mean that it's going to have to be a flipper disc, or can you cram 3.5 hours of high quality anamorphic video + a 5.1 DD sound transfer onto a single sided dual layer?!

Back To The Future

Dave, perhaps worth adding:

The official website for the DVD release of the trilogy is now up - www.bttfmovie.com

www.bttf.com reports that a brand new trailer, not the one shown on the R4 release of JP3, will be shown on the website SOON!

As part of my regular trawl for Band of Brothers DVD news, I have turned up the following:-

On The Digital Bits:-

"HBO's War Stories is coming on 5/21 (and yes, they will release Band of Brothers on DVD later this year). "

On a Dreamworks SKG Fan Site:-

Starting April 8th, 'Band of Brothers' is returning to HBO on weekly basis. The premiere episode will be two hours long followed by one hour episodes every Monday at 9:00 p.m. The DVD and VHS release is set for Fall 2002 in a special Box Set.

The R2 Project have posted a list of rumoured dates for key Warner Brother releases. They are usually pretty accurate with their information and if the latest post is true, how about this for a 25th November line up:-

Band Of Brothers
The Time Machine (This year's remake)
Scooby Doo (This year's live action)

I think Warner Brothers should make a fair bit of cash before Christmas!!!

Another titbit of info for Indy 4
After years of starts and stops, the Indiana Jones empire seems to be shaking off its cobwebs. Producer Kathleen Kennedy says a new writer will begin penning a script in June, with a first draft due by the fall. (Her office denies a report that it could be Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love scribe Tom Stoppard.) The fourth chapter in the Indy saga will be based on a story recently written by cocreator George Lucas, who tells EW that the biggest challenge facing Harrison Ford's Dr. Jones this time may not involve snakes or sword-weilding heavies. "There is a scene where a lot of Indy's ex-girlfriends show up, but they are not major characters," says Lucas, hinting that both Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Mrs. Steven Spielberg, Kate Capshaw (Temple of Doom) might cameo. So what does Indy himself think of a reunion with his former flames? Says Ford with a wink: "It's probably going to be the best scene in the movie."Source: Coming Soon! Snapper or no-snapper. That is the question :D

I know BBC stuff sometimes gets released by Warner in the US, so maybe with this the BBC have the distribution rights in the UK (hopefully). Only problem is many BBC titles are a little over-compressed. Hopefully it'll be a Warner disc just distributed by BBC so we get decent quality pic and decent case (though will we get any extras, and being Warner we might miss out on DTS if that's available).

The Star Wars dvds I have seen are all in 4:3 with borders, so they look crap on a w/s tv, and the audio is ever-so-slightly out of sync.

Barney, in the past when there have been 2 releases they have specifies which one (such as with JP).

I have checked amazon.co.uk and there only seems to be one r2 version coming out (this could change) and .com has a ws and fs on offer.

guys,

should we include answers to very regular questions of popular boxsets like:

* x files
* sopranos
* 6 feet under
* friends
* Angel & Buffy
* Simpsons

etc?

Hi Davester,
Thanks for checking out the Lord of the Rings info on the 2 disc version. On play.com they just say screen spec TBA. I think I'll pre-order it for now and I can always cancel if I find there is a fullscreen as well as a widescreen. I would definately want a widescreen version so I hope that it will be available in r2. Thanks

Davester, just a couple of suggestions.... any chance you can make the titles a bit bigger so they're easier to spot, ie.

Back To The Future

If you can get the title changed, how about something like:
Commonly asked release dates and specs **Please check here before posting**

Oh and it's probably worth removing Usual Suspects from the first post now, just to keep things tidy.

Good work by the way. :)

...oh and some ET news worth adding, reported at DVD Times and many other places:

Universal will finally release Steven Spielbergs E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial to Region 1 DVD on October 22nd this year with one small catch, the DVD will only be available to buy for a 10-week period! Two sets are planned…

The E.T. Limited Collectors Edition that features the 2002 Theatrical Release in a 2-disc set will be available in both Widescreen and Full-Frame editions, each carrying a retail price of $22.95.

The E.T. Ultimate Collectors Giftset will feature the Original 1982 Theatrical Release in Widescreen, the 2002 Theatrical Release in widescreen, the same extras as the Limited Collectors Edition, a CD soundtrack, a script from the original feature and a collectible senitype, all for $69.98.

The only way to get the original version is to buy the overpriced 'ultimate' boxset. (For the time being at least :rolleyes: )

more Dwarf news, this time international release dates

R4 same as R2 (nov and feb)
R1 seies 1 Feb 25 2003 (possibly series 2 but they don't know yet)
no news on any differences with extras but with simultaneous r4/2 releases might help with the price!!

(info taken from http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/deck01/dvd_getting_it_covered_120702.html where they also have a small pic of the s2 cover art!)

the BBFC lists 1m16s of cuts on the extras for LOTR extended edition. Between that and the lack of DTS, the UK R2 edition is to be avoided.
check here (http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified.nsf/6c58504cd644dcd5802566a4004a5ef9/28be21a5f81977a280256c3600561d75?OpenDocument)

is that actually in the film or in the extras, i'll take cuts to the extras if it means i can get the package un-crushed and my player doesnt do DTS anyway so that doesnt matter

I saw Robert Llewelyn's "Woman Wizard" show last night, at the end of which he told us that filming of the Red Dwarf movie will start in March 2003.
