Just bought my first car (M, 1.4 Clio) dead chuffed, but the stereo is utter crap.

Wasn't planning on turning into a boy racer, but i would like a nice in car CD player for it (not a changer)

Don't really know what to get - detachable face seems to be safe but other people have talked about ones that flip over or something? Do they all player CD-R's?

My mate said some did mp3, are they v.expensive?

So any advice and links to cheap suppliers would be great.

(My gut instict told me that Halford is probably the car equivelent of Currys.)

All depends on the amount you want to spend and what you're looking for. if you want mp3 playback then kenwood do a couple of good value ones. Practically all the new models are compatible with cdr/w's now so this shouldn't be a problem. Definitely get one with a detachable facia (it would be difficult to find one that isn't anyway). Kenwood have their MASK system where the facia spins around when the ignition is off revealing just a blank panel. I would pick up a copy of Max Power (or similar) and look at the ads at the back (I've found that going to one of the advertisers are cheaper than the net, plus you can see the unit and get advice if you go to somewhere decent) :)

I can only think of www.caraudiodirect.co.uk at the moment

I used caraudiodirect and found them to be a lot cheaper than halfords (I saved £90 on a system).
Also they were very quick with delivery so if you see anything that takes your fancy compsre it to these guys.

I can recommend http://www.bass-junkies.com/ they fitted my CD head unit, changer & complete set of new speakers. The bloke was really helpful, and actually sorted me out a system for £150 less than then he knew I was prepared to pay.

Stay away from Halfords though, their prices are ridiculous!
