View Full Version : Can you recommend any good "thin" digital cameras?

Hopefully the thread title makes some sense!
We're looking to buy another digital camera, but this time one that can fit into our pockets a little easier than our Panasonic DMC-FZ7!
Haven't really got a shortlist yet, as the hunt has just begun, but I've started looking into cameras along the lines of the Fuji Finepix Z5fd (although we don't own any XD cards, so that'll add to the cost).
Anyone bought a slim digital camera recently, and if so what do you think of it? I'm interested to hear "real user" opinions in addition to what I'm reading on the usual review sites.
Thanks!
"Real user" opinion is probably less useful than a review site. No one likes to buy a shiny new gadget only to find it's not so good, let alone admit to it.
I think you'll find most people think their camera is great!

The Casio Exilim range are thin and of a decent quality. They're a bit restricted with regards to optical zoom though. They do what they say on the tin quite well, by all accounts, if that's of any help what so ever?

I went through this process myself recently as I want a slim camera to take to a wedding.
I've gone for the Canon IXUS 70 (£124) which is 19mm thick.
(Currently waiting for it to arrive)
I shortlisted 3 others based on dimenions.
Sony DSC-T200 (20.4mm) £250
Pentax Optio M30 (18mm) £125
FUJI Finepix Z100fd (19.8mm) £200

Thanks for the replies. :)
£200 is more than we were wanting to pay at the moment. However I'd seen the Ixus 70 for £124 and Z5fd for £110 on Amazon.co.uk (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/redirect-home?tag=thedvdforums-21&site=dvd), which is about what we want to spend.
The research continues...
have a butchers at some of the Casio Elixim Card cameras on their refurb store, they're really small and there's always some bargains:

I look fat on all of them :(

Wasn't there a camera release fairly recently that had a setting that made you look thinner, or am I imagining it??

Another vote for the Exilim cameras.
I love my Z600. Small enough to slip in your pocket on a night out, yet versatile enough to produce some great shots. There's no viewfinder, but the large bright lcd more than makes up for it. With some of the exilims it's also possible to shoot in raw mode by accessing the service engineers menu. ;)

1966 - thanks for the heads-up on the Casio store!
Our first digital camera was a 3MP Casio (and about £600!) and we were very pleased with it. Casio added to the research list!
No worries, as mentioned they are refurbished items, but I've ordered from there in the past, as have several friends/family, and the items are always in brand new condition, the only difference is that they are in a plain cardboard box.

And now ours is as well!
Finally made our minds up and went for the EX-Z75, which is currently £89.99 at Amazon.co.uk (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000MVWE8I/thedvdforums-21) - even comes with a free camera case.
According to all the reviews we read it isn't the best for picture quality (c.f. Canon, etc.), but as it's not meant to replace our proper camera and is only a point-and-shoot then it's more than adequate. Must admit the price was a big factor, and I've managed to pick up a couple of spare batteries for it from eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-5826355) for just over £7 delivered. Still at the playing stage, so no photographic excellence as yet, but what we've seen so far is promising.
Anyway, thanks for the advice!

Nice one! :D
I'm constantly amazed at how good (for a P&S) these exilim cameras are in low light situations.
Love playing around with different shots, much to the annoyance of the missus:

Nice piccies! A bit of digital noise on the first one (but exactly what I'd expect and can happily live with) but the second one is pretty good!
After only a little bit of playing the "Best Shot Flower" (a.k.a. macro) setting is quite impressive on our new camera - really good detail in the pictures. Not been out and about yet to test it outdoors properly.
Not that I could condone hacking my wife's new camera, but how did you get into the service engineer menu...? (I'm feeling a bit too lazy to Google it at the moment!).

Ta!
The trick with the low light shots is to make sure the flash is off and the image stabilisation in on. Both shots above were hand held.
As for the hacking: http://inweb.ch/foto/rawformat.html
Not tried it myself.

Yeah have a look at the Casio Exilim card range. A few of my friends have various ones. They seem to be very fast at taking picture, the flash is quite good and the pictures are good quality. If i ever bought another compact it would be an Exilim or a similar sized Canon.
i saw cheap canon ixus 70s (?) (not sure of number - 7mp anyway) on 7DayShop (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=530&gid=6083&id=30372) for £128, i am a big canon fan and they are pretty damn small. worth considering?

I just bought one from Amazon (see further up the thread) and it is very compact. Not as thin as the Casios but still a good (small) size.
The thing I've noticed most is its start up time. From pressing the on button to being able to take the first picture is something like a second, maybe less.
It truly walks all over my previous compact which was an Ixus V3.
