It's back. My favourite show of last year and they pretty much crammed a lot into this opening episode of which i'm on the fence a little if it's a good or bad thing.
My biggest problem is the Tyra/Landry 'event'. Up until that point those two were the funniest thing about this episode. Landry is a cracking character but now i feel they've painted him into a corner.
I also like how we're a few months down the line. Certain people have changed: Lyla finds Jesus, Riggins has pretty much been reset and become the token jock and Julie is even more of a bitch. And the new coach reminds me of someone but i can't place who. He look a bit like Mickey Rourke.
But so far so good, there's only so much they can squeeze into the opening season so i'll forgive any issues i have so far. I pretty much hated the pilot of the first season which took me a while to really get invested into the characters so maybe it'll be the same this season.
Still, great music used throughout and i'm glad it's back.
EDIT: Great interview here with Kyle & Connie (No Spoilers) http://www.timeout.com/newyork/article/time-in/23120/back-in-the-game-extended-version/1.html
Good to have it back & a mixed-bag of a first episode. The Landry/Tyler situation was cute upto the "incident" near the end which feels out of place in this show. Not so keen at Lyla's conversion to religion although it's understandable.
Anyways, it's early days & any show about american football that can be this good without actually having any football in it, must be doing something right.

Didn't like Julie last year, can't stand her this year. Saracen should just sack her off. Its not like her dads coach anymore.
Didsapointed that they've had Riggins just go back to the same character as at the start of last year. Thought they'd developed him really well as the season went on.
I get the feeling Smash is heading for a fall.
Hopefully we'll get someone off the O of D lines as a character this year, or maybe even a WR.
I wonder how this'll affect Landry. Will he take out the guilt on the opposition from his new un-named position on the team?
I need to just type loads of differerent words such as Fantastic - Awesome - I Love This Show!!11 - copy and then paste every new episode. Its just a brilliant 45 minutes of entertainment and I was waiting to say "it should have ended last season" etc etc and been all upset, but as usual it was a great episode. Fanboy alert.
I also thought it was great and can see the storyline building up. The new coach will not get on with everyone and then Coach Taylor will find his family breaking apart and the only thing that can be done is for them to rejoin with each other.
But as for this weeks episode thought it was very good, not sure on the Landry storyline yet but see how that goes.
As great as it is, this season is already looking predictable. As mentioned above, the new Coach is already looking like an ass & this combined with the Taylor family situation will result in the old coach coming back & rescuing the team & his family. Of course, thankfully there's plenty of other interesting characters & their stories will carry the show hopefully.

Like others thoguht the major plotpoint was very unusual for this show and just when Landry was gonna get maybe lucky

What a disappointment, where has last years show with its emphasis on small town stories and characterisation gone? Instead we get ret cons about Riggins age plus he loses all the gains he made as a human last year, Matt and Julie apparently put their relationship on hold for 8 months. Tyra and Landry's plot line belongs in a soap or One Tree Hill not FNL. Why isn't Lyla at collage or did she also take the magic lose-a-year-pill?
If it doesn't improve I going to dump this.

I thought it was a few of their last years as well Sleepy, in fact I'm pretty sure it was mentioned they were seniors throughout last season.
Main disapointments for me:
Riggins back to how he was at the start of last season
The thing with Landry, how is he going to be the funny guy now?
Seniors that are still playing :dork:
Acting was excellent always, coach Taylor's wife best of all when he told her he was going back to TMU early. :notworthy
Don't think I'll ever dump this though, once I've invested in a season thats me hooked for the duration of the show. :/
Much better episode this week. That's more like the show I remember from last season. Characters acting more like their old selves too, especially Riggins. They should just give next year's Emmy/Golden Globe to Connie Britton now as her performance this week was heartbreaking.
I thought a few people were over reacting to things that weren't really there last week, we didn't see enough of Tim to judge where the story was heading. This week, as Tony says, charachters are back to how they finished last season. Riggins and Lyla was a fantastic scene, but the whole show was stolen by absolutely wonderful performance from coach's wife. I also felt real compassion for Buddy, Here is a guy who loves only two things, his family and his football and both are being taken from him due to his own behaviour. Rather than become melodramatic, even my wife feels sorry for him now, a chap who's commited the ultimate sin:eek:
The show seems to have gone even further away from the actual football story arc this season, and in a way I think its better for it. By concentrating on a family and its career aspirations and high school kids as they make life changing decisions I think it is more gripping than just concentrating on whether or not the Panthers will win State.
Uh oh! .... First episode ratings were apparently "ok" but dropped 20% for the 2nd episode. :|

I love this show and was thankful it was given a second season. That said - I don't think it should go further than this season. Could just be me though :D
EP3 for me was FNL at its best, with so many great moments. Buddy and I practically punched the air in unison when Coach agreed to come back. Street's second prep talk to Riggins was a highlight too, it made me laugh for all the wrong reasons.
It'll never, ever happen, but how cool would it be if Jack Bauer picked up Landry's Dad for work one day? :D
Glad to see the writers proved us wrong & made things difficult for Coach Taylor to come back with the Smash ... Oops I mean the Panthers winning the first game. Also funny to see Riggins upto his old mischief by trying to use God to get into Lyla's knickers.
Oh & I'm not embarrassed to say I cheered when Julie got slapped.

Was that the "I'm Awesome!!" bit, made me laugh as well :D
Any doubts i had about whether or not this show would be as great as season 1 have gone. Episode 6 was almost perfect in that it's funny, sad, joyous and sombre all in the space of 40 odd minutes.
I've actually really taken to the idea of Landry being a football player. I kinda figured it was a cop out and an easier way of giving him screen time but in a way it gives the viewer a better way at relating to the game, especially those, like myself, who aren't all that clued up on the game. He seems like a fish out of water and i can identify with that. He did good this episode and is still one of my favourite characters.
Also I couldn't help but wonder if Lyla would be up for a spit roast in this ep.

I think FNL is a close to spot on as a TV drama can get.
Loving the series so far, and I love that with Landry they made him a hero through determination and not skill - which would have been unrealistic.
Agreed, this week's episode was as close to perfection as television can get. Poor Landry from such a high to the lowest of lows in the space of two minutes. The coach's frustration from not getting any was funny & the icing on the cake would have been seeing Lyla stray from the Lord with some threeway bedroom action. ;)

Phew - I wondered if the writer's strike was biting.
Cheers Tony.
Apparently this is one of the few shows that's been least affected by the Writers strike. They have 15 episodes completed & ready to be shown.
Another great episode this week. Matt's finally gettin' some (and boy did he make the right choice!) & who knew Smash could run that fast!

I loved the first season of this and I was so looking forward to the new season. But having now seen this season's episodes, I felt a bit let down. Second seasons are always difficult because in the first seasons, all the ideas are fresh, each episode is establising the characters and people stay in character. Come the second season, you have to move forward and lots of writers then just rejig relationships or dump in ideas just for the sake of it. With FNL, I just feel many of the characters have lost their integrity and the plots are disjointed. I don't think I have been this disappointed since watching the second season of the O.C. (loved the first season, hated the second).

9 episodes so far and S2 has not finished yet. Apologies if I implied otherwise. It's just that nowadays I prefer to watch my shows in chunks rather than weekly for better continuity.

According to AintItCool, the S2 finale airs on Feb 8th, so that's one-a-week until episode 15. :)
Is it too early to start thinking about a possibility of a third season? What with the writer strikes and ratings.
My fingers are crossed but i'm not hopeful tbh.
The one good thing with regard to the strike, the show is not up against anything new now, so hopefully the ratings will improve due to this.

Can't they just give Riggins a break for once? :(
I don't know who to feel more sorry for. Riggins, Buddy or Landry. Fantastic episode as always. Tyra looked gorgeous at the dance & the Coach's household situation is laugh-a-minute.

All superb - actually envy you for not seeing it before :D
best episode of the season. one of the best ever. cool bits :
- basically everything in the taylor house of course. especially when tim first called her 'shells'. then he is told to put the beer back and she giggles 'haha...hes so bad'.
- the buddy doorstep scene, probably the best sad scene this season
- the first locker room scene where the two coaches trade barbs
- the fight. i liked it, sue me
- coach throwing the other coach against the wall was just brilliant.
- the party scene '...i will END you'. haha
man there wasn't much i didn't like here. the landry/tyra and tami/sister stuff continues to retread old ground but its very well acted.
Solid episode this week. At last we got some football action & it sure was an unexpected finale! .... Regarding the "coach interference" .. I assume they were awarded the touchdown & won the game?
...and what is it with Riggins? ... Things are not going to end well with that Drug runner looney.
Riggins just can't get a break can he? I like how they played the Coach's honourable speech right after he'd just stole $3k. He is a decent guy yet he always finds himself between a rock and a hard place and forced to make rash decisions, i have a feeling his Brother is going to feel the brunt of this latest story arc.
I can't remember what's happened to Street lately as he hasn't been in the last two episodes. The last i remember was he asked Lilah for help on how she changed her life. Did he take a trip somewhere?

Didn't he move in with the bloke he met in hospital?
Yes, you're right thanks. He moved in with Herc.
Thoughts on this weeks ep (i always post these on a different forum hence some of the comments) :
blah, it wasn't that great. i can't really say it was bad (though as has been mentioned, the cash scene and the 'bad coach' scenes were kinda dumb), there just weren't that many great scenes.
good scenes :
- tim / julie doorstop scene
- coach & smash & chick in his office. just an awesome scene by coach, initially it seems like they have done their research then off the top of his head he just blows them out of the water with detailed knowledge of the backup. 'what does your mother say?' 'my mom?' 'yeah, the woman who gave you birth'
- 'that's not our burden. that is our gift.'
- as jay riall mentioned the smash/mother scene at the end was good too.
so yeah.. i dunno. just a bit of a disappointment after last week. the riggins stealing the money thing felt so out of character.
oh and somehow no jason/lyla/buddy/tyra/landry? wtf?
robzinski

The Riggins stealing the money thing felt so out of character.
I don't know really. I think its just another way of highlighting that away from his brother with the Taylors he was the picture of responsibility, helping around the house/with the baby/being an older brother figure for Julie, but stick him back with his brother and he's drinking in the morning, dumping rubbish on the floor, and stealing cash from a meth dealer.
yeah but he's always been the type to just mope about in his own little world drinking himself into oblivion. i can't think of one other instance where he has stolen or done anything bad to anyone but himself.

This weeks ep just didn't seem to fit in with other recent eps, like parts of it were meant to have been aired earlier in the season or something.
I wasn't that keen on this week's either. It's now getting too far away from the football element (was there ANY in this week's?) & dangerously getting too much like a soap-opera.
...or maybe i'm just upset that Saracen's HOT Latino "maid" has gone. ;)
Great emotional episode this week. At first you thought Saracen was just being a dick but his outburst under the shower really turned it around & between that scene & Smash's end scene in the locker-room, brought a tear to the eye.
And as for Landry ... Oops! ... Bad call, but lets be honest, we'd all make the mistake.

Thought it was rubbish this week apart from Tyra looking amazing.

I've been watching too much Arrested Development, I thought Tyra's final scene was going to end with her saying "I've made a huge mistake" :)
As reassuring as it is to watch the geek get the gorgeous filly i too think it's all for nothing, it'll only end badly. Top episode this week and once again great music used. They really know how to use Explosions in The Sky tracks to score the emotional scenes. The bit with Tyra & Landry was almost as good as Smash rejoining the Panthers last season when they had the racist spat.
Oh and Priestess - Lay Down :notworthy .He may be a misguided fool ******* his potential away but Riggins knows how to party.

Hopefully the writers strike will be resolved this weekend to allow at least a couple more eps to be made.
Be a shame for it to go out like it did if this weeks was the finale.
Yeah, it was a solid episode, but certainly no season/show finale.
The Christianity is strong in that guy if he can resist the temptation of Lyla! :)
.... and you couldn't help but :D at Landry scoring his touchdown.
I hope NBC make the right decision as that's no way to finish the series. Now i suppose we wait with baited breathe.
Great to see the main man responsible Peter Berg show up in this ep, he had some great scenes with Coach. Also Saracen seemed to have cheered up after his emotional breakdown last episode. I hope they haven't swept that storyline under the rug.
Oh and Crucifictorious for Guitar Hero IV!!!
so is that it forever?? They can't end it like that! One of the best things on telly. I watched House after it and got bored!!
Latest rumours regarding the future of the show....
We might get a 2hr tv "movie" to wrap the show up .... or
... it gets picked up by another Network.
To be honest, i'd go with the former.
Radiohead

But as things stand that's the last episode :(
Real shame this has ended, especially in the rather uninspiring manner that it did. I suppose you can't argue with the people in charge though. If people don't watch it in the numbers required then its only logical for it to be canned. My favourite show by a wide margin, unfortunately there is no accounting for why the majority of people prefer the rubbish that is served up.
Very disappointing news as much as i'd like closure with a tv style movie finale i'd rather another network picked it up (excluding Fox). Showtime have produced some consistently excellent shows over the last couple of years and i think FNL could sit comfortably with the likes of Dexter, Brotherhood, Weeds et al. They could make the show a bit more grittier but imo i think the writing, acting and directing of FNL is mature enough and it could make a simple transition to a more adult network without changing what makes FNL so great.
I'm in two minds about buying the next boxset that's coming out. It seems a frustrating prospect.
Some scuttlebutt at Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117981232.html?categoryid=1417&cs=1&p=0) that a 3rd season may still be possible:
"Friday Night Lights" may shine on for another season -- and on more than one network.
NBC Universal execs have decided they want to go the extra yard to ensure the drama returns for a third season. To make sure that happens, conglom is having serious conversations with several networks about a plan to carve out multiple broadcast windows for the show, which has received critical worship and has a cult-like following.
Peacock has had talks with the CW, Comcast Entertainment Networks (E!/G4) and TNT about sharing "Friday Night Lights" with NBC. DirecTV, which last year picked up the rights to NBC sudser "Passions," has also been brought into the mix.
Just how the shared window plan would work is unclear, but one model may be the plan NBC worked out for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
Starting this season, episodes of "CI" premiered on USA Network and aired a few months later on NBC. Skein has generated solid numbers in both windows.
Whether NBC U can work out a similar deal with a network it doesn't own remains to be seen. Already, some people familiar with the talks have complained that Peacock's asking price for "Friday Night Lights" is too high.
Still, the show's loyal core audience and attractive demos -- it's among the most popular shows on TV with upscale viewers -- could help close the sale.
Reps for the Peacock and producer Imagine Television declined comment.

I'm really pleased this is getting a dvd release so quickly having not seen any of the second season yet. It's a show that deserves to be watched properly, without ad breaks or network banners flying across the screen!
I'm glad I stopped watching on ITV4 last year and just got the dvd set of season 1 as it was doing my head in (especially when it started moving around the schedule).
