I have just watched all five seasons over a period of a few weeks in readyness. Have to say with the possible exception of the outstanding episode five Ruth's departure  and all that consipiracy shenagans in the first two episodes, season five was comparitively weak, especially the religious nutters episode (No 8) and the last one with the Thames Barrier nonsense.
Up until then only the dire 'Riff & Bea' episode (the awful one about the has been celeb rockstar and his drug snorting missus) No 8 of season three was the unusual low pointsof the series as a whole.
Here is hoping it picks up a bit. We are already preparing the familiy's betting on which regular character gets the implausible and sudden departure from the series, sadly the old clues of introducing a new rather similiar character the episode before (where Danny went just a short time after Zafar arrived for example was so obvious!!) isn't done anymore.
Here is hoping....

Surely Adam "he's a loose cannon! brilliant!" Carter is odds on for the chop considering his antics in S5?
I almost gave up watching spooks with s3 which I found utterly tedious for most of it.
S4 brought it right back on forum, and overall I enjoyed s5 too
really looking forward to this now

They should just give Harry a van and let him drive around London sorting it all out himself. That would be a great show.

Actually that could make a great spin off, gather all the ex Spooks (that are still breathing) such as Zoe, Matthew, Ruth etc together and start their own private security agency.
Anyway, I have just caught the trailer, looks like we are in for a feast of Adam losing it spectacularly which should make for some big exit I would have thought.
If there is a new male Spook on board in the first episiode then you just know Adam's contract is about to get cancelled....
Just thought I'd bump this one up as it starts tonight on BBC1 at 9pm.
I'm really looking forward to this...Shame it's not in HD though :(

Hope they’ve learned lessons from last year’s rubbish season. A couple of decent eps amongst a sea of dross just won’t do 2 years in a row. I note that they couldn’t even work up the enthusiasm to do the season 5 DVDs right either. Even Kudos know they produced a turkey overall and can’t be arsed to sit down and falsely enthuse about the episodes.
Trailer was snappy but it seems all about Adam still and frankly he’s not that interesting.

I think I need a second watch of that first episode (which of course isn't repeated as far as I can tell!) as first impression, I thought it was pretty terrible!!
The plot was all over the place but I suppose that Ep II could tie up the loose ends though.
And a British Railways branded carriage in Teran?!?!?
I quite enjoyed it, typical Spooks thought in that the pace just never gives up.
One of two cheesy lines apart this was a cracking start to the series.

Not bad,but I still don't think it's the same without Ruth though. Over to BBC3 for me too.

Well episode two was A LOT better I thought even if there was an awful lot of that old cliche in the form of endless railway arch locations! Lots to wonder and tempt inb what looks like it is going to be an ongoing story arc this series.

Much stronger season opener than last year. Wouldn’t have minded it spreading to three eps but with only ten eps that would be a significant chunk on one storyline. Still, good to see that the ramifications from this continue throughout the following eps.
Amusing to watch the Kudos team trying to de-frost Ros. Writing such a cold character last year it’s a bit much to expect us to believe she’s now so empathetic.
Not a big spoiler, but something I read in a magazine recently about the series:
I read an article on this series that says it has a single story arc, unlike the previous seasons, so we should expect the Iranian links to continue.
Must say I thought (spoiler for ep 2, in case someone's not watched it yet) :
that Zaf was going to do the brave thing and let off the grenade in that lorry. He knew he was toast as he was infected, and he also couldn't allow the mercs to get away. It certainly seemed that Adam was saying goodbye to him as he got out the lorry.

Never watched Spooks before but thought both episodes (also watched the 2nd part on BBC THREE) were pretty good.
Loved seeing granny with the hand gun - that character is brilliant! See should play M.

Yeah I thought so too.
But the thing is though WHY
did the Infected Iraqi, knowing how deadly the virus is run into the built up poplated area of central London? Wouldn't/Shouldn't he have done the decent thing and found a quiet ally to snuff it in a pool of his own blood and therefore not risk an entire city becoming infected? Sure though, if he did that, they'd be no story to tell other than the special agent trying to cure himself.. but still - seemed contrived.
I'd like to thank the BBC3 types for using spoilers. I hate these threads when there are two episodes on different channels each week.
Well, I enjoyed it as usual. I still miss Ruth though.

There is a shot of an F18 or similiar taking off in the opening title sequence.... :suspect:
I am wondering one thing, will there be a seventh series? I am not convinced, indeed I had doubts there was going to be a sixth at one point.
Didn't like the way that all of Adam's psyco problems which formed the basis of much of series five were casually dismissed into the dustbin (along with it would appear his now vanished son) with just one quick exchange between him and Harry at the beggining.
And Zaf? I have a sneaky feeling we haven't seen the last of him.
Still needs Ruth to come back though, Harry needs some serious cheering up!
Having watched the first episode, I was bit confused (not helped by the big messy rush they had in the first ten minutes to set up the rest of the episode): I thought previous series had shown that MI5 deals with domestic intelligence and MI6 handles the overseas stuff. Is that not the case? I couldn't work out why Adam and Zaf were out performing such an important operation in Iran when (I thought) it wasn't their agency's area.

Ah, was not paying attention obviously. What I meant was 24 S3, with the virus plotline, had 2 F18 hornets screaming along the L.A. creek beds to shoot down an escaping helicopter. ;)
Anyway....
One of only two shows I actually follow.
And this is the better of the two.
I love how unafraid the makers of Spooks are in tackling various issues. They've got some serious balls to show the British government being responsible for bombings that cause mass civilian casualities... It's extremely refreshing to see another take on politics that ISN'T what we're bombarded with in the news on a daily basis.
I got hooked when I saw Episode 2, Series 2 (the one with the suicide bombers)
I knew from that point on that these people weren't afraid...and that they were making some bloody quality entertainment. For its 59 minute runtime, the value you get is quite remarkable.

It's not quite as black and white as that, although I have to admit I thought the same thing at first.
MI5 handles threats to national security, so it's quite possible that certain missions that lead them abroad in the interests of national security may also be undertaken. According to Wiki, "while mainly concerned with internal security, it does have an overseas role in support of the mission". So there we are :D
Ah, good, the writers aren't just being really sloppy then! I think I started to pick up on things which weren't working because those first minutes seemed a bit messy; looks like it was all okay after all!
They were following up a direct threat of a bombing on a UK target, so I guess it was ok.
Mind you, Zaf royally screwed the whole mission by alerting the people in the office that he knew about the bombing. I'd put money on that woman in the office showing up later in the series - the one that gave Zaf the evil eye after the explosion...she's sussed that the British are involved.
I also wondered that had happened to Adam's kid. Mind you, we don't really know how much time has passed since the end of the last series...they didn't even resolve how they got out of that flooding room. I wonder if there's going to be some flashbacks later in the series?

I'm fairly sure you saw Adam and 'Roz' surfacing in the Thames at the end of S5, hence no cliffhanger.
A bit of a cop-out that Adam spends the whole of S5 mentally self-destructing and then is magically cured with a throwaway line in the first five minutes of S6.
Though he clearly does have a screw loose if he's having it away with 'Roz'.

Think S5 was the first for no cliffhanger ending
not sure if a spoiler as more my thoughts but ...

Just got around to watching the opening two-parter. Good tense start to the new series (I genuinely thought throughout the episodes that key characters were definitely on the way out!). They also seem to have layed some groundwork for future episodes so hopefully this series will be a little more consistant than the last.
Looking forward to tomorrow night's now.

I thought this series was actually comprised of one 10 part story.
It is, it is supposed to have one main story running throughout the series.

yep, the actions of the team in the first two episodes guide how the rest of the stories in this series work apparently. Really impressed with it so far

hey im glad to hear about that angle - it might give the series more meat as i feel it turned to throwaway in the last.
I'd say it's looking fairly promising, but the 'bad guy' (can't remember the codename) is going to have to be interesting. If it's another British / American politician / arms dealer working to start a war with Russia / the Middle East in order to cement his grip on power / make massive profits then I think I might lose interest.

He got pretty harsh treatment if that were going to be the case. Didn't he get shot in the back in first episode? And that's ignoring the fact that he's contracted the disease and as far as we know he's not been given the cure yet...unless it was Russians who took him - they're the only ones we know have a treatment for it at the moment. We know that Iranians don't have the cure or else those people in the lab would have been alright...and they were presumably the ones that were 'adapting' the American strain.

Well the first episode was a little messy, the second which I had the pleasure of seeing again on BBC1 was a cracker and then there is the third just shown on BBC3 - Wow! this is brewing very nicely!
Looks like Harry is still pining for Ruth though is that annual psychologist session with the word association is anything to go by!
Can see that Adam's err unique interview technique of the tasty Iranian source is going to end in tears and just who are this mysterious dodgy lot Ros has signed up with after an afternoon inspecting the French agent's leaky plumbing?

Episode 3 confirms the writers have not only been watching 24 boxsets but also first season X-Files as well! A strong episode though even if Ros’ character continues to demonstrate character traits completely contrary to ones she showed last year. Jo is looking increasingly foxy.....which is nice.
An excellent, tense opening two-parter. It just goes to show that we can do big television as well. I've never been a fan of 24 given how convoluted the plots were, I much prefer Spooks.
Might seek out the DVDs actually.

Difference is she didn’t give a toss about anyone last year and now she’s melting over Adam and willing to scour the world for Raf! The writers have clearly been alarmed at criticism about her aloofness last series and have made her so empathetic this year that I half expect to see an RSPCA poster up in her cubicle featuring a piccie of an ickle kitten.
Here’s hoping there’s a "big surprise" planned for her character. And soon.
i missed out on what happened to ros. i liked her...what happened? did she go down in a blaze of glory for queen and country or was she being paid off by the other side?

I'd hardly say she was melting over him, just a bit wound up that her bloke had to sleep with another woman to get information.

I just don't buy 'Roz' and Adam as a couple, and it made the end of episode 3 just feel weird. It's as though we missed a few episodes where they actually hooked up. We're seeing much more in the way of a more natural romance between Adam and that Iranian bird.
Was surprised to see Malcolm out in the field bearing in mind what happened to his best friend at the beginning of S5.
Right that's me out of this thread. Can't trust people to not give away stuff that hasn't been on BBC1.
If that is happening let us know and we will add the tags. Like you I am only watching on BBC 1 so will not be to happy reading something that should be within the tags.
Dunno why people can't start seperate threads for each episode, pretty sure that's what happened with previous series and it avoids the problem.

Sorry for any offense!
Dunno why people can't start seperate threads for each episode, pretty sure that's what happened with previous series and it avoids the problem.
I had completely forgotten that we had separate threads in the past and although we are already into the series I think this is the way to go. This thread can remain open for now for discussing the first three episodes and a new one can be started for this weeks BBC 3 episode (6x04).
Please use the tags if you are discussing episode 3 until it airs on BBC One on Tuesday evening.
Oh Jo... Jo Jo Jo... what have you done to your hair?
Presumably they wanted to change her appearance from attractive to tough now she's an established agant.
