View Full Version : The Peter Serafinowicz Show

Starts tonight at 9.30 on BBC2.
I'm very much looking forward to it after the two series of Look Around You and the trailer on YouTube.
I'm hoping the crappy advert was just poor judgment and not a representation of the quality of the show.

Thanks for the heads up, don't watch much UK telly so didn't know about this but I've enjoyed him in other stuff.

Oh, I forgot I remember seeing about this when randomly browsing his wikipedia entry ages ago!
Cheers for the heads up, I hope it isn't tosh. Is it a sketch show or what? Edit: Looks like it is.
yeah - the adverts for the 'hilarity of Thursdays' are pretty poor, but from Spaced to Look Around You, he's a pretty funny bloke

Is this the guy who did Darth Maul's voice?

Aye.

But more importantly, he does the "Cashier number 4" voice you hear in the Post Office :D
What about this Vivienne Vyle show that's on, is that starting tonight or is it in mid-flow? Crap or worth a watch?
I'm a little worried about this show, Look Around You was special, creative and imaginative. From the ads so far it looks like "Just another sketch show", I pray I'm wrong but then he has been in some duds. "World of Pub" anyone?
Ooh good heads up, just plonked it in the planner. Will give it a go after the mrs has caught up with Brothers and Sisters.

I thought this was going to be complete dross going by the adverts, but it didn't seem that bad at all. Never really been a fan of [not going to attempt to spell his name] but most sketches seemed to hit the mark quite nicely.
It works as the sketches are short so there's always going to be something coming up that will raise a smile.

Thought he was very good but the material he had to work with was awful.

Some missed but the majority hit the mark. Also totally stunned to see a sketch show on the Beeb without canned laughter!!! :notworthy
They show a few canned laughter free sketch shows on BBC3 (although it maybe the laughter playback machine probably died of boredom)
One thing we already know is PS knows how to recreate a genre and he's pulled it off again here. The Cillit Bang ripoff was bang on ;)

Very hit and miss. As said above it's good there's plenty of sketches as it means the crap ones don't stay on for long (did have a bit too much of the clone show though). The Barry Scott impression was ace.
The funniest sketch I thought was the guide to getting married, though I usually love those parodies of old "how to" videos.
Laughed and not laughed. Some spot on production - O News was particularly good I thought.
Had to pause it for later when they started revisiting sketches (e.g. Clone House).
a very 'hit-and-miss' show IMO
Very hit & miss. The Clone House thing was funny the first time, but did they need to revisit it that often?
That said, the Ralph Fiennes/Leonard Rossiter bit on O News cracked me up :notworthy

Must of been in a stupid mood, but ****** myself laughing at the first Michael Caine sketch when he appeared in the background of shots :D

I'm not yet convinced - admittedly, I didn't watch it all, but what I saw didn't really get me going. I found some of the sketches way too predictable.

I liked it, not laugh out loud funny throughout but the ideas were good.
Nice to see he put his mrs in it and also Barry from Watford!

More hits than misses, and no audience laugh track - pleasantly surprised.
The shopping channel spoof has been done before, but it still felt fresh.
Loved the kitchen gun too :D
I liked Elephants and Trains and a few other sketches, but overall only about 30% of it was actually funny.
Loved "Look Around You" though so going to give this another chance...

Just caught up with it, thought it was very average, quite disappointing really.

I quite enjoyed this, certainly was better than I expected, I think the big test will come tonight though, to see whether they've written a new episode or whether, like most sketch shows these days, they'll just repeat the first episode for the next 5 weeks.
Guess I'm alone in thinking this is the worst sketch show I've ever seen. Shame - I liked most of his earlier work, but this is unbelievably bad.
More fool me for giving it a second chance after the weak first episode.

Its not brilliant, but it definitely has its funny moments. The Al Pacino sketch had me laughing. His impression of him was pretty good- not as good as Ben Stiller's, but still good. Other impressions aren't as good, like Simon Cowell, which sounds naff all like him.

I love nothing more than giving the BBC's recent "comedy" output a good kicking, but this has been good so far.
Of course some of the sketches aren't too hot (Pacino, Michael 6 sounding too much like Borat), but it's made up for with stuff like Dicken's Fruit Corners and the Butterfield disguises.
Also - Anyone else watching Vivienne Vyle? Two funny BBC shows in a row. Can't remember the last time that's happened.

Nope I thought it was utter dross as well. Unfortunately for me my husband thought it was hilarious is parts so I'm stuck with watching the rest of the series.
Missed last weeks so watched last night - it wasn't all great but you've got to admit that the "Dicken's Fruit Corners" was pure comedy genius.

"Dicken's Fruit Corners" was pure comedy genius.
  Loved it!
And the Al Pacino sketch was great too :D
It wasn't as good this week, but the Al Pacino, Butterfield (especially 'Christmas Man'), Dickens, Basil Fawlty impersonators had me chuckling. 'You're A ****' was OK too.
I'll keep watching it as he is a nice guy and worth 'sticking with'. It's certainly better than that ****-storm of **** that Saunders is doing.

It's a shame you know we're going to get another sketch of Michael 6 each week and it's tragically bad. All the "one off" sketches are much better than the repeated theme ones.
Though the "How tos" are great. The bit about the baby seeing into the future had us doubling-up with laughter.

I really enjoyed this actually. Didnt' see last week's so everything was fresh to me, but of course the problem with most sketch shows (well, post Fast Show anyway) is that the first one you see is always the funniest as you know they're going to recycle the gags over and over ad nauseam.
I liked the "Look Around You"-ness of a lot of it, fairly obvious considering who wrote them both, and good to see Robert Popper popping (arf) up in the show as well.
And the "Kill The French Ambassador" bit had me in stitches.

this weeks wasn't so funny. i really liked the first episode, though. hope they didn't stick all the strong material in the first ep to catch viewers. hopefully next week will see an improvement.
oh and which one is his missus, the blond or brunette?
I'm loving the bits of Look Around You-ness.
For some reason the news reader who keeps working through the options until the "ding" makes me laugh everytime..

Don't know why I find that hilarious, but I do!
PS for those who like the 70's style public information bits - seek out "Birds Of Britain" if you've never seen it on Look Around You 2.

Watched both episodes on saturday night after the pub, whilst having a bit of a smoke with some mates.
We laughed our socks off the entire way through! It was awesome.

Not quite sure what it would be like with a clear head though...

A bit disappointed with it although some of his impressions are spot on - loved his Chris Tarrant and, unlike a previous poster, I thought his Simon Cowell was fantastic. The Beatles sketch had me laughing too as did Al Pacino.
Personally I think he could do with a sidekick.

I saw it for the first time last night, didn't raise a smile.
Good impressions, terrible 'jokes'

Yeah, Kevin Spacey was a good impression but didn't work quite as well as the previous ones.
Darth Vader was quite funny though, and BBN news still cracks me up :)

KEVIN SPACEY impression was excellent. Definitely the best show of the series so far.

I'm a bit stunned as to what programme people are watching here. I'm finding this one of the better sketch shows of recent years, and bloody funny. The spot on impressions (Alan Alda is very very good) are just a bonus.
Do people really not like it? I personally think it ***** all over something like The IT Crowd - funny, since Graham Linehan is a script editor on this showing that he does actually remember how to be funny after all.

I like Serafinowicz. His impressions are for the most part are spot on. But my God the jokes are weaker than my grans tea. If he gets a 2nd series he needs to get some new writers.
MetalGearAl
23-10-2007, 07:11
I think that sums it up - Serafinowicz is a great personality and talent, but the sketches just aren't that great. His Kevin Spacey impression was spot on, but during the whole first sketch we sat through most of it in silence.
Loved the Butterfield, serial magazines and "The Cheese for Liars."
It's still more watchable than most other things on BBC at the moment.

Hilarious. Michael-6 has me in hysterics and Rossiter as Fiennes made a lunatic kind of sense. Be funny to watch him and Sessions try to out-Pacino each other.
Marple & Poirot was the only blah bit I thought.
I think this is the funniest show in years. Yeah, it's very hit and miss, but when it hits, it really is right out of the ball park and more than makes up the poor sketches.
I can't remember the last time a comedy show had me in tears of laughter week after week but this one does.

Bit of a weaker episode this week, but still good stuff.
On the very off chance someone's not seen the original...

This prog is curiously old fashioned & it seems odd that a relatively unknown person should be given a show to himself to do impressions of Leonard Rossiter.
Still, if it prompts one to put their "Rising Damp" dvd on then it has succeeded in its mission to make people laugh...in a round about way.
Like the 70's public information films it parodies, there's little point in bothering when the original thing is far funnier. That was the problem with "Look Around You"...not so much funny as "raise a smile in recognition of the original schools progs on which you're basing your humour"-time. Rather self indulgent & obvious.
There's really nothing to be gained from doing an impression of "Rigsby". One only stands to lose because Rossiter was the real mc coy...a bona fide comedy great.
Comedy is thoroughly ho hum these days. One takes more comedic value from watching Alan Titchmarsh at work...or is it that he is just "laughable"?

29-10-2007, 15:45
He wasn't really doing an impression of Leonard Rossiter, though... Or rather, the comedy isn't that simple. I'd never made the connection between Ralph Fiennes and Rossiter before, and when he did it in the first episode I really laughed...
The idea that Fiennes is Rigsby (rather than Rossiter) is pretty funny, but then having him appear in Schindler's List as Reggie Perrin is great - these synaptic leaps are what separates mediocre impersonation and good comedy.
I haven't thought that Serafinowicz's show has been brilliant, but it's had it's moments and I'm happy for my licence fee to go on a few more eps.
Those Ringo impressions are the best bits for me. The way he says "bloody", and the Goldfinger parody- dead on, cos that's how all Ringo's songs sound.

Gave it another go... ...painfully unfunny!! This really is a poor, poor show...if he get's a second series I think I'll shoot myself.
...the funniest thing about this show is this very thread...different strokes for different folks and all that but I really fail to see why any forumite could find anything to laugh at in this waste of a half hour??!!
Butterfield stuff really makes me laugh. I had already seen the original advert so I recognised it immediately. V funny
I quite enjoyed the latest one. All the film stuff leaves me cold as I'm not into modern films. But I loved the robot hunter, based on the snake guy on channel 5. And the Laurel & Hardy sketch was well done. The bleeped news bulletin was also quite good.

I liked the bond sketch as well - "I haven't got a wife" - "although it could be someone else's wife"
More miss than hit for me so far. I really hate the De Niro sketches. Loved the sausage Ad
I'll keep watching it though
