View Full Version : Final Fantasy movie...Any good ?
Saw this playing on a widescreen tv in tv/hifi shop today and looked and sounded pretty stunning. Is the film/disc any good ?
There's a review of the R1 on DVD Times here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=368&story=2338).
It does look fantastic, and there are a tone of extras (I'm guilty of having not actually watched any of the extras yet though) but the film left me rather unsatisfied. If you're a fan of the games then you are probably more ready to accept the basic storyline. A decent film and worth it for the sheer spectacle alone imo.
I enjoyed it but it probably helps if you are a fan of Sci-Fi, it's nothing like the games though. The story line is not the best but it's one to see because the computer generated graphics are stunning (is this the shape of things to come ? - I don't think so)and the extras are plentiful.
I liked the movie, sure it's not brilliant but worth watching the once at least. The 'out take' extra is reasonably amusing and the 'Thriller' easter egg is also great.
i'd also have to say that i really like this film, sure it's flawed but it's not too bad and the story isn't as boring as some people make it out to be.
Plus, the dvds are pretty nice as well.
if your a fan of the series dont expect a long or even complicated plot in the slightest, the plot in FF:TSW is like counting to ten, it dont need no thinking at all, looks nice but is a huge let down (for me and my RPG'ing friends anyway) if you want a nice looking movie with an unoriginal plot then its ok.
I thought it was great....others didnt :D

Looks lovely, but not really anything original plot wise. I've only really watched it once, but it was very predictable imho, and the characters needed more depth

This month's PSW magazine (formerly Playstation World) has some of the extra features off the FF DVD set (Aki's dream, Aki biog, theatrical trailers). Certainly looks stunning, don't know if that's enough to convince me to buy it though...

It's rubbish, a dead, soulless film. No sparkle, no magic.
The dialogue is unbearable, frequently knuckle chewingly bad and sometimes laugh out loud awful.
It might be great technically but it looks poor IMO (apart from the fantoms, which are ace). The image composition is messy, as is the inconsistent production design. It's not a seamless, believeable world.
The "heal the earth spirit" plot is laughable, and the wooly headed hippy cast have zero charisma. They just look like a bunch of stupid pinko lefties.
Following on from that, I was yearning throughout for the evil General guy to give them all a good slapping but by woefully underdeveloping the character and saddling him with crap lines the film has a huge whole in the shape of a mega cool baddie in it.
