View Full Version : Flickr beater?

I do love Flickr (and, apparently, Flickr loves us, too). I can spend hours looking through random strangers' and people who I am getting to e-know shots.
For all its wondrous facilities, could it be that Flickr is lacking something? That its not giving enough back for all your hard work?
Oo, the controversy
Meh, enough of the build up. Check out http://www.jpgmag.com/
I kind of stumbled across it whilst mooching through a Flickr (the irony!) user's personal sites. It looks to be very cool. Lots of similarities to Flickr, sure, but specifically jpg only wants your best shots, and there's a chance of one (or more) of your shots being published in print, which is nice, and, ultimately, a little more rewarding than a simple online portfolio with (mostly) friendly online critique.
Tell us what you think.

I subscribe to jpgmag and it's OK, not really the same as flickr and hardly a rival, but a nice site nonetheless.

No, its not the same, is it? Well, apart from the whole "upload your photo's and let others leave comments" aspect. I think that JPG seems to be an established magazine, and there's something rather prestigious about having your work printed in a recognised publication, isn't there? Definitely good for the ol' CV ;)
I suppose the point I was trying to make was that, if you're going to upload your work, and you can still get the critique, then why not take the chance of getting some of your work published?
e: plus, you can download their back catalogue of issues, in Adobe reader format - nice mag it is too

A flickr contact of mine submitted an article to the magazine which made it in. And he got a subscription as reward (which he gave as a competition prize as he was already a subscriber). It is a nice mag but I don't see it as a flickr rival. It was co-founded by a flickr employee as well IIRC.
Flickr is pretty good. I recently signed up to a full account. I don't think anything can really match it now.

Google's the only one big enough who could rival it. They have their Picasa thing but they've not really got the Flickr element yet.
Amazon have the backbone in their S3/EC2 architecture for anyone to set up a Flickr competitor (in fact SmugMug I think uses S3 now).
SmugMug might be closest but they don't have a free account and that prevents them being as successful. They come across as more professional though.

How is zoomr doing these days? I got an account but haven't used it since march.
Smugmug... They come across as more professional though.
But very American I feel, even though a lot of members are from around the world. I don't really get that feeling from Flickr. I like the idea of Dgrin's (their forum) Whipping Post (http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=30) forum.

I really like JPG Mag - not a competitor to Flickr for me, but there's some really some photography there.
