Signed up to Sky (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://skytv.at/thedvdforums) at one of their outside hut thingys in the Ridings Centre in Wakefield and got a Sky+ Box for £49, with free install and a £24 credit on my first bill if I signed up to the full Sky World package.

Its not on their website but it was a Sky Retailer and they used the Promotion Code LSRS 6BOX on the application form.

Thanks OP, we're thinking of running away from Virgin Media as fast as we can when our contract is up next month, how does Sky compare in general? We'll probably go for all the normal mix of channels + movies (not interested in sports).

Also what's Sky broadband like? I don't mind paying any amount up to £35 a month for that but I need a very dependable service and no cap limits - I work from home a lot.

I was looking at Sky (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://skytv.at/thedvdforums) for broadband but heard so many bad stories I decided to pay the extra for Be Internet (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&z=s&v=355254) and am so far very happy with my choice (ganted only be connected 15 minutes but hey its all been good!

I've been eagerly searching for any decent offers for current customers as I've signed up back in April for Sky but at the moment, all I've found is the standard offer of £129 (£99 box and £30 installation). There's been talk of people being offered £49 box with no installation charge by threatening to cancel but after calling Sky yesterday, I was told that the only offer available was the bog standard offer.

I'd be very interested in knowing if any current customers still tied in their contract have been able to get SKY+ on the cheap - although I'm sure it's worth paying £129 for tbh, I think if I can save myself £80 then I'll try my best to find it! :)

It took Sky BB a fair while to set up my connection initially, but never had any prolonged downtime ever since.

This is on the Max 16mb service. Ok, I was pee'd off at the time cos they took forever to get it up and running (it was always one thing after another) but, since then, I've been impressed.

If you are on an LLU enabled exchange then it should be a paltry £10 a month for upto 16meg. No downtime at all for me so far, been with them since March and they are as dependable as Zen (one of the best ADSL providers in the country) who I was with previously. No caps that seem to have been found thus far from a fairly heavy downloader here :)
Despite all the bad press that Sky seem to get I have nothing but utmost respect for them. I get good service throughout all of my TV and broadband packages and have done for a number of years. Sometimes you have to make them work a little harder to get good results out of them (originally had a cut price Sky+ box and have had a replacement for free just the other week when it was out of warranty).
Their call centre is also very good IMO, and most likely that you speak to someone who you can actually understand...though there are a few very broad Scots on there that can be as difficult to understand as the equivalent Indian phone jockey LOL
Only bad things I have heard (and that my brother experienced) was delays in setting up when migrating from a previous ISP. Mine was flawless, my brothers less so as the stack of Sky modems he has at home from the 4 attempts to get an order processed will show. He ended up moving to BE24 instead in the end, but got compensation from Sky for messing him around.
A thumbs up from me and I think it makes a change to post something mainly positive about an often maligned company.

Was with Sky and it was good enough, but had a lot of dropped connections over a few weekends and the support was pants, but switched to Be Internet (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.s2d6.com/x/?x=c&z=s&v=355254) back in June and have not experienced a loss of connection in all that time. Support is very very good too, with tickets being answered within a few hours or the freephone number answered pretty much instantaneously.

To highlight how good they are, I just had this drop into my mailbox

Dear Be Member,

Happy Birthday to Be - We at Be would like to wish ourselves a very Happy 2nd Birthday, and in light of this special occasion we are giving you 2 days FREE surfing.

Enjoy yourselves!

What have you found wrong with VM? I recently signed up to their VIP package and can't fault it. Rock solid 20mb unlimited broadband. If you find that too expensive I'm sure they'd let you pick up the £23.50 broadband/tel deal.

Are you in the South East Splobber? I want to go with Be but unfortunatley they aren't in my area. Basically I need to get rid of this Virgin pap but it looks like a complete ball ache.

To go with Sky or any ADSL you have to have a BT phone so I need to get that installed which is 129 quid. Then there's the sky installation. What a complete pain in the ass.

Despite what they say on that page (unless I've missed a link to a clear explanation), Virgin Media now employ a traffic shaping scheme (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html)which is causing a huge stir especially for people like me who called VM many times (and paid for the privelidge) to try and find out why my download speed was a quarter of what it should be, only to be told there may be a fault in the area, my modem may be faulty, check my PC etc etc. The call centre staff have no idea about this policy and I resent paying money to call their broadband helpline to find out. Why couldn't they have just mailed their customers to tell them this was now in place?

Even now I've been careful about what I download and sure I'm not breaking their 3Gb limit, certain websites are very slow during the day and miraculously speed up 4-fold at midnight every damn day.

With many TV broadcasters putting programs online, movie rentals going online and downloadable demos for my Xbox 360 etc, I don't want a broadband service where I have to constantly worry about how much I'm downloading every day. Lowering my download speed after midday effects the speed I can get files from our office server for my work.

That aside, VM helpline staff are consistently clueless when I've had problems and have insisted on engineers being called out several times to fix my TV set-top-box when it's obvious that there's a problem with the VM TV services in the area (neighbours also had issues, but telling them this always falls on deaf ears).

Rant over! That felt good.

Worst case scenario is you hit your 3gig limit between 4pm and midnight (assume they start counting at 4pm) and are then limited to a 5mb connection for 4 hours. This still leaves more than 2/3 of the day at full speed.

Do you really think an ADSL line is going to give a better overall performance over a 24hr period?

Seems like a reasonable policy to me.

Seems like a reasonable policy to me.No, there's something weird going on where certain websites, images and files download slower between 4pm and midnight even when I'm no where near my limit. Downloading files directly on Telewests servers seems fine whatever the time of day. At exactly midnight the problem disappears each day - this can't be a coincidence that it's just started happening at exactly the 'peak' hours they've defined.

That aside, even if the policy worked OK, I signed up for a 20 Mb service and I transfer large files from my office to home. So to suddenly have a quarter of that speed means that I can't work effectively from home because it takes a lot longer to get my files from work. PS I work evenings too - basically any time of day.

Worked for me, just paid £49 for a brand new box with free installation. Had to refuse the refurbished box which was a PVR2. He even offered Broadband free - turned down.

Its not a coincidence COZ I SUFFER THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE as you mate.
awful speeds between 4pm till exactly midnight, because ive sat there and watched my downloads immeadiatley speed up to max at the stroke of midnight. its a **** take.
i might have to pay the £40 odd disconnection fee or whatever it is, to get out of this. im a heavy downloader, but i thought virgin had no caps when i took them on. bloody gits!
