View Full Version : recommendation for 22 inch 4:3 TV ?
i'm looking for a good quality (but cheap!) non-widescreen TV.
my requirements are:
(a) around 22 inch screen
(b) must have 16:9 mode available
(c) SCARTS supporting RGB/S-Video
(d) front AV inputs
(e) Nicam or better
(f) Teletext
if it comes with a stand, even better.
any recommendations? i don't want to spend more than 350 pounds.
thanks!
The Sony 21LS30 fits all of your requirements above (except the screen is 21" like all 4:3 TVs of this type).
The picture quality of the flat Wega screen is excellent and it looks very swish for a 4:3 in its silver livery. The front AV inputs don't have an s-video in, but the second scart takes s-video.
It's also NTSC 3.58 compatible, which is very useful if you fancy importing a Gamecube at any stage. I bought my TV from Empire Direct for £270.
Thoroughly recommended :).
Ok, I am the fussiest person in the world and recently I was looking for a 21" 4:3 TV for my bedroom, for PS2 etc. After much thought I went for the Sony KV-21X5(S). When watching a DVD it became apparent that there was a feint but noticable grey line accross the width of the screen. At first I thought it was on the movie but I realised it was on the TV. And once I'd noticed it, I was constantly looking for it and it was very annoying! I complained to BigSave (who I got it from but I dont think they do it anymore). An engineer explained to them that apparently this is quite common on certain types of TVs, Sony being one of them (and indeed some PC monitors). Anyway, BigSave gave me a refund because they still considered it faulty and duly collected the TV.
Then I found this beauty....
"Philips 21PT5505 CTV 51cm Nicam Fastext Real-Flat"
And I just cannot fault it. I truly love this TV! It looks great, has fantastic picture and sound quality, is Nicam, pure flatscreen, Autosetup, 2 Scarts, one of which accepts an S-Video signal (I use this for PS2), phono AV and headphone sockets (on the right hand side), NTSC playback, Fastext, Wake up clock , Smart Picture (optimises picture quality to one of several preferences with the press of a button), something called 'incredible sound' (fake 3D sound) etc etc.
If you get this you won't regret it! :)

It's not a fault. The Sony tube is an aperture grille Trinitron. The grey line is a damping wire that keeps the vertical wires in an aperture grille properly aligned within the Trinitron picture tube.
I can barely see two of them on my Sony monitor as I'm typing this. It all boils down to taste. You were within your rights to return the TV because you didn't like it but I'm quite happy to tolerate them as I'm more than happy with the image I get.
I have a Diamondtron monitor (basically the same technology, just not Sony) and I can juuuust make out the two lines as Numpty says. On my TV though I can't see them at all, although I did expect them to be there.

I searched for ages for a cheapish 21" bedroom TV (not a cross dressing dwarf before anyone asks...) with a single button on the remote for switching into 16:9 mode - switching the digibox depending on whether I was in the living room or bedroom was becoming a pain.
I looked at the sony range, but the best part of £300 was more than I could justify, and ended up buying a Warfedale for £120 from Tesco!!!
Not a perfect picture, but not bad, and only mono , and the teletext is sloooow - but excellent value for money!
And it's got a button marked 16:9 on the remote!!!!!

I agree, I knew it wasn't a fault as such but a manufacturing feature, and I did go for 2 weeks before even noticing it! But when I did, I couldn't stop looking for it (I'm just weird I guess!). I was just thankful BigSave saw it as a fault and gave me a refund.
