I've seen the odd few from the Tate Modern hall but do people often take a camera to museums, art galleries and other such places? Are they prohibited usually?
it will vary by museum, room, exhibition and even individual exhibit. I've found that it's more acceptable in a museum rather than art gallery, to boost sales of art posters in the shop maybe? You usually can't use flash or a tripod.
Yeah, most Art places will restrict flash. Thank god for ISO 1600...and image stabalisation if you've got it.

Reminds me that the Tutankhamen exhibit at the O2 is in November and the Terracotta Army is at the British Museum soon. Mustn't miss either.
From this week at london:
London Science Museum, Design Museum, British Museum, etc, its all good. The number of flashes going off in the science museum was unreal! (And the fact they're shooting at stuff far too far away to be effective was also making my giggle)
The only place I couldn't use a camera was the gallery section of the Tate Modern. Your welcome to use them in the Turbine hall, unfortunately they were changing exhibits at the time :(
Always best to check the guide. For example your welcome to shoot as much as you like outside in yorkshire sculpture park, but the indoor gallerys are no photography, flash or not. (And had enough staff to enforce it, even without tale-tale flashes)
