First impressions? Off to the shops at lunch for a looksie - whether I can justify shelling out the £129 against splashing $199 when I get to the US in December.
Worth it?

$199 + Tax so more like $220 most places but you do get more for your money (Daxter/Family Guy/Memory Stick)

I've got the Asian 'Silver' one and I'm very impressed, screen is about the same, maybe slightly better, its MUCH lighter, feels good in your hand, no fingerprints (on the silver one anyway), charges via USB, faster, almost silent UMD, I like :)
Argos are doing a deal with a game, accessory pack and this weekend a £10 gift card for £129.97.
Cheers

Hey Dave, I think you swung me. Found the argos deal meself on a search earlier and posted it in the Bargain Forum.
That's a great deal, espec with the gift card. I wasn't sure which game to go for so plumped for PES since it's an old friend. I quite like the look of Tekken Resurrection too.
Must remind the girlfriend she's not getting much attention this weekend, he he!
How's the battery life on this beast?
Dave - quick q - my right palm rubs quite badly against the ridges of the 'lock' button on the current PSP, tis really something that bugs me. Presume it is the same for the new one?

No probs :) Battery life is much better, helped by the UMD cache I'm sure, around 5 hours apparently, I've got about 4 :) Suppose it'd depend, a lot of that was using WIFI to 'remote play' the PS3.

Hmm, various buttons have moved around, the wifi one is on the top now for instance, I can't say I've noticed that problem in a long PSP session to be honest, even with the 'fat and heavy' model! It just seems much more comfortable the new one, especially as the weight is half as much maybe this will mean its more comfortable for you? If you like I can take a pic of the switch when I get home and any other bits you want to see, let us know.

Hang on, hang on..
They actually named the PSP "Slim & Lite"?

Is "lite" an accepted spelling of the word "light" now?

Cheers for that  I think my pudgy hand grips it too tightly! Always gets a bit sore. No need for photos cheers, I will check one out in town tomorrow I think, hopefully it will be a bit more comfortable as you suggest. Thanks again :)
Just had a quick play around with one in Gamestation and, although it was only a couple of minutes, it's made me want to 'upgrade.' Biggest deal for me is the improved buttons and d-pad. Always felt that the square button was about to pack in on the original PSP so it's nice to see it improved for this model. The weight difference is good news as well. I think I'll have one of these but I'm waiting for the white one to arrive - the black one picks up fingerprints very easily. Not really a big issue but I can hang on for the white one.

No probs, happy to help :) I would definitely recommend the silver one though, looks really nice and no finger prints, same reason I got a white PSP 'fat and heavy' one and DS Lite White, anything in black seems to attract finger prints!

It seems so, unfortunately. It disgusts me.
I got the Daxter/Family Guy/Memory Stick pack today imported from the U.S for about £123 inc shipping.
The silver one is a lovely piece of kit
(although I've always preferred the PSP to the DS anyway).
The improved D-pad, faster loading times and reduced weight make it a worthy upgrade IMO.
The Argos deal is a snip though and I would have probably bought that one if I hadn't have been a big kid and not been able to wait to see what deals were available.

Cool, was that from VG+ ? Also does the US Lite have 'x' to select in the XMB or is it 'o' like the Asian/Japanese models? If it is 'x' like the UK ones, I may have to sell this one as its a little irritating with them swapped over being used to the UK PS3 and the layout now.

Are VG+ customs friendly?
Actually I got it from a trusted ebay seller for a buy-it-now price.
It should have worked out more but his PayPal account wouldn't accept foreign transactions. In the end I paid by Google checkout and he knocked a bit off the price as his fees were less by that payment method, so the total came to $249.99 including tracked shipping.
He marked the item as a gift so hopefully I will avoid import tax.
Everything went smoothly and I got it within 4 days.
Personally though I'd now go for the Argos deal with the 3 year added warrenty.

They are :) Got my original DS and other things from there no probs, very good company, would have bought my PSP from there if it was on the site, couldn't wait though .. impatient me!
Borofan - could you let me know about the selection in the XMB please?
Cheers

What's the deal with the battery - is it the same size/shape as the original so I can keep and use the couple of third party ones i've bought if I upgrade?

Nope, its thinner and lighter so from what I've read you won't be able to use your old ones unless you mind them bulging out of the back, however battery life with 'old' batteries should be even better as the new PSP is more efficient.
Hope this helps,
Cheers
Dave
So do Argos stock the silver edition? Or any UK retailers stock alternatives to black?
I'm tempted but not tempted enough yet, shocking to think my PSP is 2 years old now!

Got mine today with the Argos deal. Hopefully it'll get more use than than the first PSP I bought and later sold due to lack of use.
Anyway, where is the best place to pick up a decent, genuine memory stick nowadays? 2gb will probably suffice.

Got mine this morning from Argos and it totally blew me away!
Never played a PSP before. Had Outrun 2006, LocoRoco and PES on. Absolutely incredible, it's like Xmas aged 12!
Top deal, top games, top machine. Best gadget I ever bought. And despite what everyone else seems to say, I find the internet browser on it ok too.
Maybe I'm just easily pleased. Anyway, top buy. TOP buy!

I have had a ds for a few year then got the chance of a Psp with 1 gig stick for £60 at work. Must say I love it. Put my tv shows, music, podcasts etc on it. Amazing bit of kit.

So is there anyone guaranteed customs free for a US Daxter pack? It sounds like VG+ can be hit and miss?
Email them and ask to mark it as 'Competition Winner' or similar.
I've never been hit for Customs from them - got my original DS and plenty of games over the years from them.

It's a smaller battery, though you can use original batteries and they'll last longer. But an older battery will stick out. Sony plans to release a specific battery cover to allow you to house the older larger batteries at a later date.

The difference in load times is pretty impressive
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="409"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?umid=106231"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?umid=106231" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="409"></embed> </object>
It seems to vary quite a bit from game to game, though is definitely quicker on average. When games are released with their code optimised to take advantage of the new psp characteristics, load times should be even more improved.

PSP Slim has 64mb of memory, doubling that of the old PSP. Chances are that it's making a cache area for quicker processing of UMD data, as well as providing a 640x480 framebuffer for the video output.

one thing i completely forgot about was the fact there's absolutely zilch space for game saves - wanted to start a Master League of PES until i figured i'd lose everything cos i don't have a card yet.
Is play the best place to get one from? 31 quid for 4Gb?
Steve Jackson
16-09-2007, 14:27
I wanted to but couldn't wait for delivery so ended up paying £34.99 for a 2gb card from GameStation (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://greatgaming.at/thedvdforums). Foolish I know, but I really wanted to get cracking on PES6 and LocoRoco. I was quite surprised there wasn't a 32mb card included as with my old Japanese PSP which would have done me until a bigger card was delivered.

I got a 4 gig card from Ebay. Was £22 with free shipping. Had a look but the seller does not have any up right now. Oh and it works a treat.
Is play the best place to get one from? 31 quid for 4Gb?
I would - hardly any chance of it being a fake card unlike the almost chance of it being fake via eBay.
If I import the Daxter pack, would I just need to provide a UK Figure 8 lead?
Also is the X and O button different on the US model? Sure someone asked before, sorry!

well I'm still on cloud nine about my Slim purchase. Thought I'd be bored of it but I still get that wow factor when PES kicks into life. Can't believe they squeezed so much loveliness into such a tiny package (just what I tell the missus every night...)
Shame you can't play PES across the net tho.

I think that's just Japanese models.

Got mine about 2 weeks ago for £35 which included a USB Duo Card reader from
http://www.mobymemory.co.uk/
Is the screen refresh better on these new ones? There is some ghosting on some games and movies on the "tubby" one.
Any idea when the silver version is being released in the UK. Don't understand why you can only get piano black. Definitely going to get one, just gotta find the best deal..

the white one's coming out next month i believe.
where can you get spare batteries for the 'Slim from?
I want the silver too. Was considering a US import but I'll just hold out I think. The white will be as bad as the black if they're gonna coat the back in gloss!

i don't understand this problem with fingerprints. i would have thought even for you lot it would be pretty simple to wipe em off? i have something called 'a cloth' that you use to wipe off 'prints. amazingly, they disappear after a couple of wipes.
thank the lord none of you are rozzers - you wouldn't last a week!*
* all of the above is tongue in cheek
I've just bought myself one of the silver ones while I'm here in Vegas.
I didn't realise there was such a difference between them until I read this thread, but I'm well happy with it.
It was the Daxter pack and it cost about $215 with tax and eveything. I also got MLB06 for $10 ('07 is $40 so I figured I could live with last years version)

good deal you got there Rhino. Gonna get me one for the missus when I'm in the US later in the year. She doesn't want it but I'll put some chick flicks on there to wean her on to it gradually (while I'm waiting to get my hands on a spare copy of Loco Roco!)

Anyone know when the Star Wars branded PSP Lite is due out, as I'd rather hold off and get that model of PSP Lite
The Star Wars Battlefront 3 game is down for release on 12th October & I would have thought the PSP release would be linked with this date but I cannot see any of the e-tailers with it up for order yet

Think the Star wars ones U.S. only.
The U.K. gets Simpsons and Spider-Man versions.

Thanks for the update; might be swayed by the Spider-Man version, although I had my heart set on the white/darth vader stencil PSP...
The Spider-Man 3 UMD release is 15th October so might see some bundles round about then

Do you need a specific lead to connect the psp l/s to my pc or will a normal usb lead work ??
Also anyone tried that lead to connect the psp to tv/monitor
Another quick question if i upload jpeg's/mpeg/avi/youtube clips will the instantly play on the psp ??
Have some cool wedding/family and holiday clips i wanna show the olds
thanks

The PSP takes a standard mini-USB lead. The same sort of one used my most cameras and MP3 players.
TV output is NTSC only, and games require a component cable. This is disappointing for me, because the TV output would be most useful on holiday, and most places only have old-style SDTVs, that probably can't do NTSC either.
The PSP will view Jpegs, but requires movies to be in MP4 or AVC format. It won't play standard AVIs or YouTube clips unless they've been converted.

cheers good to know
I've got an old(ish) Sony TV, it plays NTSC but it only has yellow, red and white/ S-Video and Scart inputs - does this mean I won't be able to play the Slim on the TV, as I was hoping to play PS1 games that way - since my PS1 is pining for the fjords.. :(

Yep. You can only play games via a PSP Slim & Lite on a TV that supports NTSC Progressive Scan via component. Videos can be played via a composite lead, but the TV still must be NTSC capable.
I have NTSC but not sure what component is - will my Sony TV not support that then - it's about 8 years old??

component is red/green/blue.
composite is yellow.
audio is red/white.

still having huge fun with mine.
Got Crazy Taxi and Test Drive Unlimited on the cheap and it just keeps getting better. Remarkably, I'm still completely addicted to PES 6 on it too (most people knock it, but I'm rubbish so I don't notice the different on any platform!)

I had one of the older PSP and ended up getting rid of it to get a DS Lite. However Im off to the US in just over a week so may try and pick up one of the Star Wars bundles.
I've seen the Ice Silver version on FleaBay with tons of accessories for £140 (from Asia) - might pick one up, unless anyone can give a good reason not too (seller has hundreds of positive fb)..?

I had both the US and Asian Ice Silver, sold my Asian one to a guy on the classifieds here, only difference really is the x and o buttons are reversed in the XMB, so 'o' is select, and 'x' is back. Nothing else really.
I got my US one from videogamesplus for £138 inc shipping, arrived a few days later via DHL, no import charges :) My Asian one cost about £140.
The US one came with Daxter UMD (which I'd never played before), a Family Guy UMD with a few episodes on it, and a 1gig stick, the Asian one doesn't come with a memory stick or any UMDs.
Whichever one you get I'm sure you'll be happy with it, the Ice Silver is lovely, doesn't pick up fingerprints, looks really stylish. I had both the black and white 'old' PSPs and much prefer this new one!
Any other queries feel free to ask!
