Shure E2C (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000CE1UO/thedvdforums-21)
I've heard good things about these so going to give them a punt - seems like a good price too.

I have (had .. returned them as acquired a fault) a pair of Sennheiser CX300 Ear Canal Headphones - which I was happy with .. how does this one compare?
Thanks.

The reviews I've read seem good (wouldn't have bought them otherwise!)
Better than the CX300. In my opinion.
Meant to be way better than CX300 but not good enough for the price tag apparently. Mylarone XB or X3 are meant to be a lo better. This is the only place to get them from:

What Hi-Fi gave the Sure E2C 5/5 stars in Dec 06 (reviewed at £60) and named them "Best Portable Headphones £50-£100 in [End of year] Awards 2006"
In a different league to the CX300, much much better.
edit: I had a pair of CX300's, but the wire on them broke (fairly thin). These Shure ones have a thicker cable and also the sound the cable gets rubbing on your clothes/blowing in the wind doesn't transfer like with the CX300's.

The e2cs are really good, and come with 3 different sizes of 3 different materials to make the ear buds up with - so something for everyone's taste / ear size!
Note to OP: They aren't noise cancelling.

That's good to know, thanks - are they also around the neck type (as with CX300).
Thanks.

Thanks, have a pair of Sony MDR-EX71's which I've been pretty happy with but the one thing that does annoy sometimes is the rubbing on the cable. Always considered going for something like the Shure's so thought I'd give them a try at this price.
Thanks to the OP too, and as already pointed out they aren't noise cancelling (as in emitting anti-noise to cancel out the background) but are probably better described as sound isolating (as in the in-ear design blocks out background noise).

I have had a pair of these for about 4 years now, they are great and I paid £50 for them and would buy them again if mine ever broke, even at that price. I'm tempted to get these again just as a spare pair.

Headphones are very subjective. I've tried Shure and Sony ear buds and find the sound quality abysmal even compared to a pair of £7.99 MX300s.
I can only assume it's something to do with your individual ear characteristics, because with me it's not just a question of them sounding a bit worse, they just sound appalling.
whats better. E2C or Mylarones?

I think it could be that you didn't have the right sized earpieces in for the Shures in that case cos they sound far from appalling especially compared to the MX300s...

You said mylarones earlier didn't you?
I've had a pair of E2C's and they are well worth at least twice what I paid (30). Lost them so may go for another set..

Updated description, thanks guys.
well its all about the sound. Do they have much bass etc?
How good do they sound
Not a great deal of bass no but they are pretty refined, crystal clear and block out everything. Solid design as well, I mistreat my phones and these weathered the storm.. :p
Solid design as well, I mistreat my phones and these weathered the storm.. :p
The cables are pretty weak actually. I'm on my third pair under warranty from the same fault - the cabling around the right headphone started coming away, exposing the wires inside.
The bass on these is really dependent on getting the right fit with the different earpieces. As for the sound - much better than anything you get with any MP3 players etc. and better than the CX300s as well which sounded really distorted in comparison and felt a bit cheap.
Quite interested in getting the MylarOne X3 now as after looking on head-fi it could be better than the E2Cs...
I've just got the E3Cs and was a teeny bit surprised by the (relative) lack of bass - even after trying all the different bud pieces. Ended up with the yellow foam ones and I've become accustomed to the new sound - it's very clear and, after getting used to a slightly different experience (compared with my now broken Sennheiser px200s), I can see the improvement.
Not sure how the E3Cs compare with the E2Cs, but I can recommend mine certainly.
Also quite interest in he Mylars after reading about them on head-fi... Cheers for the link 1012007

I think it could be that you didn't have the right sized earpieces in for the Shures in that case cos they sound far from appalling especially compared to the MX300s...
I spend hours buggering around with the different sized rubber bits. Big, small, whatever, pressing deep in the ear, pulling out a bit, doing the hokey kokey and pulling it out etc.
They still sounded crap. So after a wash I gave the Sony's to my brother, who also said they were awful.
When I offered him the Shure ones he just laughed!
Apparently, ear phones need to be "worn in" and after a few weeks usage, the sound quality will have improved.
agree but that's the sound rather than the fit. If the bud's don't fit, they don't fit.
shaq365 and dm can you pm me when you get the mylarone's and tell me which ones are best??
Thanks
yeah ok as everyone will know.
Ive always wanted to know whats better?
Mylarone X3 or XB or Sure E2C??
Any owners of all 3 out there??

also its worth mentioning that the E2C and the E3C are different sizes.... i initialy bought the E2C and after many painfull daysof trying all the differnt buds and attachments... even with the smallest it was still to big to fit into my ear canal... so bear in mind if u also have smaller than usual ear canals..
After a bit of research, i did find out that the E3C used a differnt driver and therefore could be housed in a smaller earpiece.... also with a smaller insert into the canal..... so i tried these and with the smallest attachment they just about fit... :)
Sound quality,,,,, both the E2C and E3C are far better than my Sens CX300, much more midrange and clarity overall, and after listening back to the CX300`s after u really do notice how poor they sound in comparison... extremly "muddy" bass and just loose all over...
Would definatly reccomend the Shures ..... especialy at that price :)

Also decided, after a lot of reading up to go for the Shure SE210. I decided against the E2C, thought they looked too bulky and resembled a hearing aid of sorts! Skipped the EC3 as it was about the same price as the SE210 which is newer and highly related. Will report back how I get on with them when they arrive.
My MylarOne X3s are being sent off today so I'll see how they compare to the E2C...
ok thnks shaq big help to all of us

l got these based on everyone's thoughts and they arrived today, so far i'm finding the quality very impressive, but does anyone else think they fit better with the left in the right ear, and vice versa? currently using the smallest black earbuds...
No. How are you managing that exactly??

Thanks to the OP - been looking for a set of these for less than £30 for watching TV on my N95 during my 50 min commute.
Cheers to the OP, found this on a search.
Incidentally they where back at 29.99 just now.
And now cancelled my order.
I don't understand what's going on as they keep sending me email telling me to update the payment details. Tried all three of my cards and they don't seem to want to process any of them, despite that I bought some books from them just last week with the same card saved on my account.
Cards are certainly all working fine down town at lunch time and two of them are for different banks entirely.
Has any body used these in the gym or while running?, just wondering if they'll stay in place or not.
If they fit, they will stay put, deffo

So do these things go right into you ear? Ive never used these types and im a bit scared :)
They don't go right into your eardrum, just the opening of the ear canal. About half the earphone is needed for a snug fit, so I wouldn't worry about damaging your ears, unless you play the music very loud. Also, I recommend trying all the earpiece sizes to find the best one for you.

OK thanks. Well I listen to music on the train, so it might be quite loud. Although i dont notice affects to my ears (like I would after a gig).
I guess being sound isolating, i dont need to have them as loud?
No, in fact, a lot less than usual. When wearing the iPod earphones, I had to have the volume to the maximum. With the e2cs, about half.

Just want to reinforce that. The e2cs are my first in ear earphones and I'm really enjoying the experience (was worried about them too). Either the large or medium foam covers fit me (the former being tighter and making me completely deaf, the latter letting a tiny amount of ambient noise through but still leaving me pretty much alone with my music, even on a noisy train). And, as has been mentioned, I've gone from the sound volume being at the maximum lelvel with my old Senheisers to about half to 2/3 on the e2cs. And nothing intrudes.
Had my manager cracking jokes behind my back in the office for 5 minutes before I happened to turn around and notice he was there... good thing I wasn't on the DVD forums then. ;)

Woah super tempted!! Although being complete deaf is a bit worrying /paranoia
It's not totally deaf although it's pretty close. I reckon you'd hear a fire alarm or other high pitched noise.
well all you need to hire is a fire alarm and a gun shot.
By then its too late anyway :):)
I have to say, as you will become nearly deaf to the outside world, you have to be more aware of your surroundings. However, I found that this comes naturally and you immediately look around more when walking, etc.

How does the sound compare to the PX200s? I got a pair of PX200s recently and the bass is not great, had thought these would be a step-up from a variety of panasonic and sony phones that I had. Wondering if the Shures might be a better choice.

I've noticed Amazon seem to have started using TNT for their super saver carrier on my recent orders. They take ages, the record is an item of mine that was dispatched using them from Amazon on Monday, and only arrived today (Friday). But TNT have been definitely taking 2-3 days at least.

EDIT: Spoke too soon, it has shipped.
I noticed Amazon now say "using a Super Saver Delivery carrier". Never had a problem with HDN but hope they haven't gone for some dodgy company now.
Anyone found a cheap source of replacement foam sleeves (the orange ones) for these? I think the part number is PA752.
The only ones that fit me reliably are the orange ones (in small) and they are brilliant but they eventually wear out.
These are coming out at over £11 delivered for a pack of 5 sets (10 sleeves).
Anyone seen a better price?
I've got some spares from my last set. Mail me your address and I'll stick them i n the post for you. I haven't used them.
Any1 one going to be as kind as DM and send me only a few foamies.
Il pay postage through paypal if that would change anyones mind

Received mine today.
Jeez, wearing these are weird, I can hear my heartbeat!
I think I found the right size - small flex. Bass is pretty good straight away so I guess I have the correct fit but doesn't sound as 'clear' as my sennheiser MX400s.
EDIT: I can hear everything in my head, even turning my head makes noise, is this normal?
Thanks very much. Email sent.

It's the thick cord used, but it may be that it's not sitting in your ear canal fully, the best fit for the E2c's has always been the sponges.

LOL no. Well try sticking your fingers in yuor ears, you can hear your heartbeat right?
Anyway had a test run on the train today and they are pretty good. Blocked out a lot of noise and I can now run my iPod at half the volume. I could wish for better sound quality though.

Surely that doesn't apply when you're having music pumped straight into your brain? What cans were you using before out of interest?
KeyserSoze
03-10-2007, 19:28
Well to be honest I don't pump the volume very loud.
I used Sennheiser MX400s before.
Not really complaining, just felt weird. I think they are excellent for the train which is pretty much the only time I listen to my ipod.
They urinate all over mx400's to be fair. They are weird but once you've got used to it you'll have a hard time using standard earbuds again.

Got mine earlier this week and I have to say they are a massive improvement on my normal headphones.
I use them on the train every day (50 mins each way) to watch TV (currently on season 4 of The Wire) on my N95 and from having to re-encode at 190% volume (http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=smartmovie), I now set it at 100%.
From having the volume set at full (10 'bars'), I now only need 2 bars!
Plus the sound is totally clear, I don't notice the tunnels (I had to pause before) and can hear all the dialogue.

I've had mine since November and use them daily in the gym for about an hour and I'd say about 15 hours per week normal use - best headphones I've had from the crappy ipod ones, Sony EX-71s and some other random ones.
The wire cracking has been a problem for other people and mine finally went recently. Spoke iwth Shure today and they checked the number on the jack, stated they were within the 2 year warranty and said to stick them in the post to get fixed. I'll keep you posted on how quick they are at turning it round.
Did anyone get an answer on where to pick up cheap replacement foams?
Ciao

Yeah - they're not the most robust headphones but the two pairs I've sent off have been pretty quickly returned from what I remember. Also, I forgot to include a copy of a receipt the second time around so it's basically like having a new 2 year warranty with each new replacement cos they just use the code printed on the jack...

Well I managed to snag some by entering a new card on Amazon.
I am in two minds with these earphones. On one side I am chuffed as the sound is superb IF you can get them in the correct positions/seal properly. On the other hand its like they where made by Satan himself as some sort of ear torture device. So uncomfortable regardless of which inserts I use on them

If you're using the sponge buds then you stick them in washing machine in one of those net bags you get with the washing tablets on a cool wash. They come out looking brand new and it doesn't harm them.
The only ones that work for me are the very smallest sponge sleeves. I put them in like earplugs (sort of screw them in) and then I don't notice them at all.
Without any music on I can hear my heartbeat and my footsteps!

Can anyone help me? I've lost one of the rubber pieces that I was using - can you buy them from Shure? Or would anyone care to part with one or both of the smallest black ones if they're not using them - will cover your costs.
You can pick a pack of 10 up from Advanced MP3 Players (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(17569)a(60823)g(134344)url(http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/Headphones.6/Shure.44/PA749/Shure_PA749_Ultra_Soft_Flex_Sleeves_for_E2C.1662.html)) for £12+P&P. May be able to find them cheaper if you search.
You can buy them direct from Shure in the States but don't seem to be able to do so from their UK site. Although if you take a look at this page (http://www.shure.co.uk/PersonalAudio/Products/Accessories/Sleeves/index.htm) on the site it'll give you all the product codes to make searching easier.
