Having just received My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service i was wondering if someone here could provide me with some info regarding this collection, in particular Princess Mononoke and Porco Rosso, and I'm also interested in Grave of the Fireflies which i haven't been able to find at CDJapan.

Any info regarding videoquality and sub or dubtitles on the main film and the extras would be very helpful.

PS. I've just seen Totoro and it's the most beautiful animated film I've ever seen.

i think at CDJapan you have to search under 'Hotaru no haka' to find Grave of the Fireflies.

In addition to the excellent site already mentioned (Lee does great work) I have my own comparison reviews online at DVDTimes.

Just go to the reviews section and choose my name from the pulldown list (Dave Foster) to find them.

I've been promising a Mononoke comparison for months now, I will do it eventually :D My opinion is that the R2 Japanese disc is the best, but then others say it suffers from Edge Enhancement - a flaw I must admit to rarely spotting on discs which are known to contain EE. However, the R1 is fantastic and is available at an even better price.

Porco Rosso - All we know is it will have the same specs as titles like Kiki, Totoro etc - English/Japanese Audio/Subtitles, Anamorphic Widescreen, Multi-Angle version...I will of course be reviewing it when its released March 8th.

Is there a decent set of all the films in one box? I've come across some R0 sets, but don't think they are any good.

Those R0 sets are bootlegs. Best avoid IMO.

I have all the R2 Japanese SE Ghibli titles and they range from excellent to astounding! However, some have subitles and some have "dub"titles.

Expensive but well worth it IMO

Check out the R1 Central Park Media 2 DVD SE of Grave of Fireflies. It's very nice.

it's not bad for a bootleg set tbh. I think all the transfers are from laserdisc and they ain't too shabby.

Some of the subtitles on the other hand.....

I can thoroughly recommend the R3 releases from IVL (avialable from DDDhouse.com). Almost perfect pictures (with only a hint of EE) and proper literal subtitles. I'm thinking of getting IVL's Mononoke to replace my British R2 (which has awful dubtitles).

Are those the releases available on DDDHouse.com?

I'm tempted of getting my neighbour Totoro from there but there seems to be 2 editions there. Which one should I go for?

The 2 discer: http://www.dddhouse.com/dddhouse/en/index.jsp?action=productDetail&productID=2151

Or this edition billed as new but without details: http://www.dddhouse.com/dddhouse/en/index.jsp?action=productDetail&productID=3175

Looks like the 2 discer but I want to make sure I get the right one.

By the way, that one has no English dub at all, has it? Might be a turn off for my 5 year olds who might enjoy the movie but won't be able to read the subtitles yet.

I got my copy from DVDSoon for that reason, couldn't expect my 5 yr old daughter to keep up with the subs

When I got mine from DVDSoon it worked out at like £7 or £8, well worth it:thumbs:

The 2-disc edition is the right one, yes. But if you want an English dub you'll either have to wait for Disney to release their version of Totoro or get the Japanese R2 (there is an R1 from Fox but it's pan&scan and has a pretty horrible picture). edit: Ok, not HORRIBLY horrible - just not good.

Oooh. Cheap. But isn't the R1 you got from DVDSoon the pan&scan one that Aardvaark mentions?

Well, pan&scan is definitely a big :nono:

So that's the only R1 out right now?

I haven't double checked since I don't know the suppliers but got the impression from the linked thread that Jap R2 is quite expensive. So I tried to look elsewhere on R2 but drew a blank. I even went as far as checking French suppliers but the only versions they list are an old out of print one and the pan&scan R1 import.

I guess I'll wait a while then... :(

if you are buying the dub for a child I don't think they are going to care about pan & scan to be honest.

Well, I'd like to be able to watch it too. ;)

Besides, my 5 year old twins happen to be picky about the black bars on the side for 4:3 shows. I spoiled them with widescreen early. :)

It might come as a shock too but I'm not too bothered about dubtitles since I don't have a clue about what's being said anyway.

I guess the Japanese release would fit my needs. But finding the same quality cheaper would obviously be better.

Dubtitles can be annoying when there are subtitles appearing but there is no Japanese audio (ie speech has been added to the dub)

The Totoro English dub is pretty nasty though (really sickly)

I've heard rumours of a Disney release in 2004. Can anyone verify that?

It will be out in the UK in November. US and Australian release are also likely (Australia by April '05 at the latest if Madman are to be believed)
