as in title should i sell my EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS to get a SIGMA 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS.
i have been offered the sigma for £310 from a local(ish) dealer, is that good
i love my EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and its big brother the EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM :notworthy
i like the look of the sigma but should i sell one or both of my IS lenses
and what would they be worth (advice please )
or should i keep my canon lenses and forget about the sigma . i like the fact its 18-200 and it would lessen my lens swapping and be a good walkabout lens .
advice please
Must confess I've been tempted by the Sigma too. I have a Tamron 18-200 at the mo which is just about perfect as a walkabout, but the extra couple of stops that the OS would effectively make available are pretty enticing.

£215 here: http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-sigma-lens-18-200mm-f3-5-6-3-dc.htm
Unless I've got the wrong lens that is! :p
You've got the wrong lens :p. Its this one: http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-sigma-lens-18-200mm-f3-5-6-3-dc-os.htm with the optical stabilisation for £355.

Ah, I see.
£299 here then: http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?pName=sigma-18200mm-f3563-dc-os-lens-for-canon&cName=sigma-lenses-digital-camera-lens
So add on the £8 P&P, and the £310 looks like a very good price.

£296 from OneStop Digital (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.onestop-digital.com/) if it matters and you can wait - but knowing you H you are probably already out buying it! ;) - Or alternatively you can get it from HK on eBay (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-5826355) for around £282

For the small difference in price, I'd stick with a Uk supplier.
I'm also half interested in this lens, and would be interested in how you get on with it, should you decide to get it.

TBH H after you mentioned the Sigma 18-200 with OS I am more interested in one of those and hearing about it when you get yours. I could realistically sell 2 of my lenses I don't use/am not happy with and contribute towards the Sigma, much the same as you really.

I've just consulted the pennies and realised this is a bad month. Sorry mate I'll have to pass. If it had been any other time I would have taken it.
If you want to sell it please use the classifieds rather than here.

I'd be very interested in knowing what you think - I have the 28-135mm IS lens as well, and if this gives the same quality and stabilisation then I'd be very tempted.

Might be interested in your 28-135IS, let me know if you go ahead will the Sigma and you do put it on the classifieds (cant see it on there ayet )

Also looking at this OS lens... rather than getting a few cheaper ones, I'm thinking this might make a very good 75%-of-use lens..
I just got the sigma one and was very pleased with it, a LOT better than the unstabilised 18-200. I got some really good shots with it and it survived the desert well!

How does it perform at both extremes, ie: 18mm and 200mm?

got a call yesterday ,i should have my lens by the end of the week
have a look in the classifieds for my IS lens  for those that asked about it :D
It looks pretty good, I'm no expert though, I'll see if I can dig out a couple of photos...
here's the first two photos I can find at each end of the zoom range. There's been some post processing but only levels/curves nothing to affect the vignetting and no cropping. Hope they're of some help. I also noticed that the lens focussed a lot quicker at 200mm compared to the unstabilised lens.

i received mine yesterday afternoon and i haven't had a chance to get out yet  but i did get this shot

its a nice compact lens with a creep lock , i feel it actually works well on the OS side as it covers box axis (you only see that on the L is canon range :notworthy)

Do you mean you can individually switch IS on and off for each axis? All Canon IS lenses (L and non-L) compensate for motion in both axes, but only the more recent lenses allow you to switch to a panning mode of IS (although again that's not limited to L lenses, but rather on the implementation of IS - the 70-300mm IS lens has mode 1 and mode 2 IS, for example).
Does it support FTM focussing (i.e. can you adjust the focus after it's auto-focussed without switching it into MF mode)?

it just has the one OS switch mate on/off
i didn't know canon IS lenses did both axis :doh:i have the 75-300 and its only got the one IS switch , thanks for pointing that out to me
as for the FTM focussing ,i have just tested it and it will not let you override AF :( but for me that's not a problem .

OK. FTM is nice but not a necessity for me either (mainly because I usually make things worse!)
Would be interested to know your thoughts on sharpness compared to the 28-135 though - after you've got used to it, of course :)
