My old 32 CRT is starting to play up so i`m having to buy an LCD/Plasma sooner than i thought. I`ll be ordering it from Littlewoods which i don`t mind because i can pay it over the year interest free. My knowledge of HD is sketchy at best but from what i understand i wouldn`t need a 1080 as i wouldn`t see the benefit on a 42". Is that right?

Which of these models would perform best using Sky+, DvdPlayer through the Scart, Xbox 360 Elite using the HDMI and possibly playing things through the PC i.e Avi`s, HD trailers and such?

From those three I'd probably get the Samsung.

There's been quite a few threads recently discussing the 1080p issue - but yes, the general consensus is that you won't see the benefit of 1080p at that kind of size (unless you sit very close). In some cases, it can make SD content look worse due the nature of upscaling by the greater amount.

You didn't specifically mention budget, but of the three models mentioned I would go along with thescoungers's recommendation of the Samsung. It's a pretty new model though, so there isn't a lot of user information out there about it yet. I would try and see it in the flesh first if you can.

Thanks guys, i was pretty much leaning that way myself.

The budget is £1000. Had the missus let me go £150 more i would have ordered the 42 X3030 :D

A bit academic, but had your budget been more I would have suggested the Panasonic TH42PZ70 (http://www.totaldigital.biz/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=43_112&products_id=2287&zenid=c0c1f7abbafc71f479522279520d703a) plasma model. I had a brief play with one earlier in the week and from what I could tell it's excellent; an incremental upgrade to the PX70. It needs a bit more investigation, but I think I may have finally found my replacement lounge television (- I may wait to compare with the 50" version though).

Yeah, I realised that :) I thought I would mention it though, more for other people who might be browsing. There seems to be quite a few people wondering whether it's worth paying the extra over the PX70 and I would say it's worth it based on my initial experiences. Not so much for the change to 1080p (although the 42" version of the PX70 can look a bit soft compared to the 37" model) but it doesn't go as bright (- not too critical as you wouldn't want to turn the brightness all the way up anyway) with not so much posterisation - a very natural looking image. The other thing is it does make the PZ700 seem rediculously overpriced.

Ive got the PX70 and Sky+ looks excellent, i think if you got an LCD at 42" you would be disapointed watching Sky in SD, well from what ive seen on other peoples LCD's anyway unless things have improved

Can you not go elsewhere and get now now pay later or a intrest free credit card , as Littlewoods inflate the price because of being a catalogue

I hadn't realised how inflated the Littlewoods prices are but deano is right - for example, that Samsung model is £999 at Littlewoods and £691.21 including delivery at the BT Shop (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(50092)a(60823)g(16417296)url(http://www.shop.bt.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4HSV)). So you are paying an awful lot for the privalege of so-called 'interest free'.

Regarding the selection between LCD and Plasma, that's why it's necessary to go see them in the flesh. My last television, I fully went into researching different models expecting to buy a LCD but ended up with a plasma.

The 42X3030 can be had for as little as £750 if you look hard enough. I bought mine from Dixons Online (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=1597&id=30372) for £815 delivered, well below your budget.

For the record i'm well chiffed with the panel and it will tide me over for the next few years when hopefully 24fps and 100hz will be widespread and cheap.

We have a thread in the Bargain Forum for some voucher codes from Dixons (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=1597&id=30372)
