I'm useless at recommending a phone to someone whose the exact opposite to me.. if it doesn't have MSMobile, a touchscreen, QWERTY keypad, MSN integration and a 2gb memory card I'm just not interested! All my mum wants is a phone that makes calls, is easy as hell to use and thats about it. She really doesn't need it very often, just due to emergencies and the last phone we had (o2) kept invalidating the SIM card every few months if it wasn't used and then cost her £15 to get a new one and a bit of credit. Not exactly ideal!

Prior to that she was on the old style Three PAYG plan that simply did a DD at the end of the month from the bank account, and that was useful.. didn't make any calls? No charge. However those phones have both packed in.

So whats a good deal at the moment? Cheap/easy handset that won't disable itself if not used for months... virgin seem pretty cheap but their T&Cs are long and I couldn't spot anything about deactivation in there.

I got my mum a Nokia 1100 from Tesco a few years ago (she'd a real technophobe probably like your mum) and she found it great.

She lost the thing and wanted another, so I managed to find one on Virgin pay as you go for about £30 a year ago, so she's happy again.

She even liked the little LED light in the top as it can help you if you are in the dark and need to see to put keys in the door, or anything.

Just a basic, non flashy phone with superb battery life and just does the job.

This is the phone here (with reviews underneath)

Albeit you can't buy it from this link, it still lets you read about it with others comments.

Note: It's nice and handbag sized too :)
