Does the upgrade use bits of XP and change bits.. or does it do a fresh install and just use the XP disc for verification?

If it's anything like the other 'upgrade' versions then you can boot off the DVD, select custom install and do a clean install, basically adding the serial number in afterwards. You are supposed to have a legit copy of XP (or applicable OS) and stop using it of course.

Anyone know how much it costs to upgrade this to Home Premium?

Yeah, clear a partition, install it there without entering serial. Then boot into it. Then from within Windows Vista, install it again, this time entering the serial (thus 'upgrading' it).

Then simply stop using the other partition with XP on ;) to fulfill the license requirements.

You can dual-boot with XP - as long as you don't try and install XP on another PC.

Incidentally, as this is an upgrade, you will need to install, and activate XP FIRST, as the Vista installer will only run from the XP desktop - this means it takes more than twice as long to install as a non-upgrade copy. (Or so Microsoft tell you. In fact, you can boot from the DVD with a completely blank HDD, install Vista to it with no code key, then, when at the Vista desktop, re-run the installer, 'upgrading' your trial version of Vista to the full version using your code key. And this does work, and activates fine, as I had to do it to install the 64 bit version of Home Premium a while back, before switching back to the 32 bit version on discovering the 64 bit version was poo)

As I said, the upgrade version I have does NOT require you to run it from within XP. I stick the DVD in, boot off that, select advanced install and ... infact rather than telling you just read this. It's a loophole MS left in.

excpect, I do NOT need to run the install a 2nd time, it works fine with the first install, and has done so for a few months now. Maybe this was changed, who knows.

OK. Next questions..

1. Is Home Basic any use.. or is it too.. basic ??

2. Is there any point in upgrading to Vista yet? Doesn't seem to do anything important that XP doesn't except give you incompatability problems.

1. It has everythng apart from Media Center and the Aero interface. Perfectly good for general use.

2. I would stick with XP!!!!
