View Full Version : Curves in Picture!
Hi,
I have a Panasonic 28DK1 TV. I have noticed when watching DVDs that sometimes things like pillars in the background at curved and not straight. What settings do you think i need to change?
In my service menu for the TV there are the following settings:
HPOS - Horizontal position
VPOS - Vertical position
HAMP - (Horizontal Amplitude)
VAMP - (Vetical Amplitude)
V-Lin - (Vertical Linearity)
V-Sym (Vertical Symmetry)
Is it that my picture is a little too stretch and therefore I need to change VAMP?
Any Help would be great.
Cheers
Richard

Does the distortion (curvy effect) occur when there are bright images on screen?
I suppose so. I mostly notice it with sky backgrounds or when someone is standing by a window and there are pillars behind him. Any ideas?

This effect is quite common on all CRT's when bright images are on screen. Unfortunately its a limitation of the technology. If its any consolation at all my Panny WS 28" PK3 suffers from exactly the same problem, and so does my sister-in-law's 28" Sony WS.
The reason it does this is something to do with the electron gun defletor plates not being able to accurately control the beam placement when refreshing part of the screen with bright white(ish). The effect is localised to the bright area, but can be annoying, especially when you may have potentially paid a mint for it. I'm not sure but I think a WS CRT exagerates the effect.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the help matey :) I will just have to put up with it then.

What Confused says is right, but what you (richy 77) posted initially sounds like something different. ALL widescreen TV's (and 4:3's for that matter) will sometimes display images with bendy edges, but that's because a large proportion of movies are filmed with wide-angle lenses. That way they can fit more of the required image into the frame, but it does have the side-effect of curving the tops of windows/pillars etc (it's especially noticeable on tracking shots of skyscrapers).
If you adjusted your screen to show these (intentionally) bent angles as straight, normal TV (filmed with standard equipment) will look odd instead. You may well have a technical fault (in which case you can ignore all this), but most 2.35:1 films will show a degree of 'bendiness' on any conceivable set-up.
I have this problem on my 4:3 21" Goodmans. I've gotten used to it over the years. I only really noticed it again when i watched Moulin Rouge the other week. During the 'Come What May' song, where the camera pans out over Paris the Eiffel Tower is bent at least 30 degrees to the left. I originally thought 'cool' must have been when they were building it :o but then watching it again on my Panny WS i noticed it was fully erect.:o :o

Some TV's are worse than others. The "curves" are particular bad on my 24" Samsung compared to my 29" Tosh.
I thought all this was down to the crap build quality of domestic TV sets....
Or rather I should say Crap power regulation (transormers)
Just the same as you get on a cheap computer monitor.
