US site "The Digital Bits" is reporting a rumour of a DVD release of Red Dwarf Series 1 & 2 in August. If this is true, I assume we'll get a R2 release form the BBC around the same time.

Don't bet on it mate, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it didn't appear on R2 for a long time after that...just look at Blackadder and Father Ted and Monty Python and..............

The release of Blackadder I in R2 occurred around two years before R1! At the time of the R1 boxset, the only discs yet to be released were Blackadder Goes Forth and Back and Forth, both of which were released shortly afterwards -- only Blackadder's Christmas Carol has not been included on a R2 disc.

Hopefully the BBC will do a simultaneous (or close enough) release, similar to the Fawlty Towers UK and US discs. But then you can never really tell with the BBC... I got an e-mail from a BBC employee yesterday asking me what Only Fools and Horses DVDs the BBC were planning to release in the near future, as well as the transmission dates for the new episodes  Surely it would have been easier to check internally, especially as the new episodes have not even been finished yet and the public have not been informed of any dates.

Seasons 1 and 2 are (allegedly) in pre-production at the moment for a September-ish release this year. That said I have heard no word on the specs except that they will NOT be the re-mastered versions.

What source do you have that they won't be the smeggin' god-awful remastered editions?
I'm very pleased that they will be the originals,
Fan-#%$^$%$#-ing-tastic.
I was beginning to think we'd be stuck with the re-done versions forever glad to see they've seen sense.

Rob - the source is the horses mouth so if they do end up using the remastered versions I will look forward to hearing the horses excuses.

I just got a head rush as I read the release date US style when you have month/day/year "Release Date: 4/11/2002" that would've meant tomorrow :( I wonder if we buy the R2 version will get a completely inferior version to the US one like we did with Blackadder? Maybe they'll put the smeg up / outs shows onto the discs as well? Ah well got a long wait still

My understanding is that all versions are being made by the same people so (rights allowing) the content should be the same.

To be fair though, I don't think the Father Ted R1 discs have the excellent commentaries ;)
