View Full Version : moving from pro-logic to dolby digital 5.1
I have a really old Sony pro-logic stereo, which I've been using with my DVD player.
I've got a Videologic Digitheatre (just the DD5.1, not the DTS version) on order from tiny for £150, but I'm a bit worried that I might be wasting my money. Will the (relatively cheap) videologic system be that much better than my old Sony stereo?
(Will I really hear the difference?)
TIA,
RikA

Too right you will
Going from Pro logic to DD 5.1 is like going from Mono to Stereo.

That's hard to answer with the info you've given.
It depends on how good (not how old) your Sony amp and current speakers are.

That's true with kit of similar capabilities, but may not be if you don't compare like for like.
A mate of mine still has a Prologic setup - a Yamaha 2070 with an oldish pair of Mission Freedom speakers, a Mission centre and some Mission DS surrounds - I very much doubt he would be impressed with a Digitheatre.
On the other hand, if you a re currently using a Prologic TV, then a Digitheatre will probably be something of a revelation.

It's just an all-in-one hi-fi (the speakers are the ones that came with it) - no seperate amp - It's just a big black box that plays cd/cass/radio. It cost my parents £500, about 5 years ago.

My current setup is nowhere near as good as that! :)
to give you an idea of what I have - this is a similar (but newer) model:

I'm hoping that the sound will be clearer with the videologic set (the rears in particular just sound like a muffled noise at the moment). I'm not too bothered about loudness (I have neighbours to think about!)

You'll be very happy.
Unless your prepared to spend some £300 odd quid, then this is the only realistic option for good 5.1 sound at an affordable price.
Some people might be quick to slate the videologic for its cheap price tag, but its worth remembering that its universally reconised (as is the DTS system) as an excellent introduction to full surround sound.
