View Full Version : HMV Returns
Anyone know if I can return something to HMV without a receipt, say like an unwanted gift that isn't sealed? cheers
I think it would be down to there own disgression if it is without a receipt and is not sealed.
You will have a better chance if it is sealed as they can sell it on easier. But it is still up to them. If you are stuck for somewhere to take it back without having a receipt or not sealed try WHSmiths and most probably Virgin/Our Price. Wooltworths used to do it but now insist on a receipt.

WHSmith now demand a receipt for all music, video, dvd & games (they have large posters up in the entertainment area stating this) They had problems with people buying at reduced price online then trying to take back at full price.
Well I had no problem taking back a sealed PS2 game I got as a Christmas present last week. Granted I swapped it for another game but they had no problem with swapping it.

HMV will check in their computer when they last sold it and if this matches your story than they usually will either swap it for a different title or give you gift vouchers. At least that what happened to me. But this time I took something back the WHSmith and got a refund, but only because they did not Gift Vouchers and I did not want it changed to something else.

HMV changed their returns policy about two weeks ago. They will no longer refund or exchange anything without a receipt :(
Does anyone know if Virgin have adopted the same policy?, if they haven't yet I'm sure they soon will.

Thats funny because I work as a DVD buyer for HMV and their policy has been the same for a while
With a reciept you can have a refund/exchange with goods that are in its original condition
If you dont have a reciept and the item is in its ORIGINAL (i.e not scratched or broken) condition you may exchange the item for an item of the same price or have a refund in gift vouchers. If you return an item without a reciept and it has been a recent sale or promotion you will only be able to exchange it at the value it was in the sale/promotion, this is why it is always wise to keep your reciept.
This policy is on the back of all till reciepts ,so if what you say is true Joe91 ask the person who told you they could not exchange the item to check the the back of the till roll because you are entitled to an exchange provided the item is in its original condition.
Hope that clears up HMV's returns policy.

You may work for HMV, but I'm afraid you are wrong.
I bought something yesterday, and the back of the receipt clearly states:
"We want you to be happy with everything that you buy at HMV. We will exchange or refund your items provided you have a valid receipt. Your goods must be returned in a perfect condition within 21 days of purchase. refunds will be issued by the original method of payment and at the original selling price. This is in addition to your statutory rights."

Can you let the folks in HMV Brum (next to New Street Station) know this policy as they didn't half make me beg a few weeks back as I didn't have a reciept!!!!

Under the Sale of Goods Act you don't need a receipt for a refund. But opening packaging of a video/dvd etc invalidates this.

Not true I'm afraid. The shop is only obliged to give you a refund or exchange (your choice not theirs), if the goods are faulty ('not of merchantable quality').
Under the terms of the act you have NO rights if you simply change your mind about something you have bought, made a mistake, or were told about a fault before you bought it. The shop may exchange or give you a refund as a gesture of its goodwill, but is under no obligation to do so, with or without a receipt.
In addition, if you receive goods as a present you aren't entitled to make any claims - the buyer must do this if anything goes wrong.

I have been on Holiday for just over a week so apologies regarding the wording on the reciept (it has changed on their website too) Although until I go back to work (the 28th) I wont be able to say for sure about exchanges without reciepts, because although on the Guarantee of Satisfaction it doesnt mention refunds without a reciept it does not say they WILL NOT. It will probably be left to the member of staffs discretion I would imagine. I will let you know the definative answer when I return to work but personally I think they just left it off the reciept to try and limit the constant abuse the policy recieves. BUt then again if Smiths are changing their policy maybe its something all high street shops are taking on.
I tell yer, you leave for one damn week and they change the whole place

My Dad changed a DVD he received as a Christmas present on the weekend in the Chelmsford branch. It was sealed. They weren't going to do it first of all but after having a word they did but said after January, the rules change and you MUST have a receipt.

i guess it will be all these people buying cd's and taking them back after making a naughtly illegal copy ehmm ,, ;)))
Do you think they will exchange my faulty alien legacy boxset for another, because mvc haven't got any:(
Like it has been said before it will be down to the discrection of the shop and if they know that the Alien boxset is in the sale at MVC or Woolworths. Although in saying that if you are simply just exchanging then I would say you have a fair chance. Your best bet would probably be WHSmiths if you can find a good condition copy.

Its still OK to do this as long as you keep the original receipt. Not that I do that or condone that activity.....

Crikey you must have been asleep the policy was changed about two months ago, new till rolls sent in and graphics behind the tills. etc, however, most shops have been lenient on exchanges without receipts over Xmas but technically no receipt, no exchange. Basically its down to the individual shops descretion over whether they excahnge without a receipt.

Mr London, I think the HMV you went to were taking the P.
how can they check on there computer if/when it was sold?
What would happen if i bought it in Preston, sent to a friend in Manchester as a gift, he had it, and took it back to HMV, there is no way they could know if/when it was sold.
I did once have trouble with HMV before it opened in our town, i bought a CD in Preston, which was sealed but when i opened it, the disk was damaged, 5 days later i was going to Manchester, so thought "ok i`ll take it back there" went to Manchester and the girl (i think she was) said "why`ve you wated so long to return it?" i told her i waited till i was coming over to save money, and was told "you need to take it back to Preston if it`s damaged!" then she walked off!!
spoke to another guy, and told him i wanted to see the manager, he came, i told him what had happened, got a FULL refund and a £20 gift voucher, which i swapped with the guy next to me for £20 cash :D
So, does anyone know Virgin's current returns policy?

They can check on the computer and see when they last sold it, if you bought at another shop they can phone that shop and they can check, simple, if convoluted and now unecessary under the new policy
