How good is this player? Compared to a Pioneer 444 or 545, is it worth the extra?

I'd like to start building a seperates hifi and home cinema system and possibly combine the cd/dvd in one unit - which is best with this is mind? Anything else I should be considering?

Thanks!:)

Certainly not any worse, in terms of picture quality. BUT consider the extra money for the Marantz if you are wanting good cd replay. Easiest way to sum up the DV4100OSE is a £250-300 dedicated CD player that also plays DVDs:) marantz have just launched a couple of new DVD players also, DV4200 thats not tweaked for best audio performance (and as such is more comparable to the Dv444), and the DV6200, which basically is a better built DV4100OSE.

Bear in mind though that £350ish gets you into DVD Audio or SACD these days also... Hope the above helps.

Cheers for that Justin. Just to clear up a point.....

It sounds like the Marantz is the way to go for me if the cd and dvd playback are both up to scratch, but the improved build quality on the DV6200 - does that mean there was a problem with the 4100?

Thanks again.

No build problem on the DV4100OSE. Just meant that when you go to £400+ retail you usually get better built machines. DV6200 is full metal casework, better chassis and drive, etc. manufacturers usally spend more on the components and casing when they dont have to work to a budget sort of thing :D

Cheers

Well, I've just recently bought a 4100OSE to replace a Wharfedale 750 DVD and old Technics CD player. Definately worth it with only one grumble. The layer change. I can now see one whereas on my DVD750 the layer change was totally un-noticable. Oh well, guess I was spoilt by it there and I don't think the marantz is any worse than most other DVD players out there.

Still, the plus points of the Marantz definately oughtweigh that.

With DVD's the picture is a lot better, less artefacting and pixellation. Always had a problem with Reds becoming blocky around the edges on the 750, but the Marantz is spot on.

As to music, yum! A definate improvement over the Technics, (even SWMBO noticed the difference). More detail and control is evident and the sound is just, well, tighter. You can pick out the instruments properly now, eg, on a bass note, you can tell if it's guitar, bass drum, synth etc. Rather than just a rumbling speaker.

Well worth the £350. (Region free too).

I notice on your website that the Marantz models use the Excel sprinter upgrade.

Does this mean that the RC6 code doesn't work on these later models?

Also your link for the DV6200 is listed as a 4200.

Cheers.

One more question for Justin....

How long is this machine going to be available seeing as Marantz have just launched the other 2 machines? Should I be expecting any clearance prices soon? ;)

And, if not, can you do a forums price on it (it's not listed in the bargain forum thread, and I've seen it a bit cheaper elsewhere including delivery)?

Thanks again for your answers!

Nick,

No its not replaced, its a current model, the DV4200 replaces the DV3100OSE, and the DV6200 replaces (in therory) the DV7100. Marantz have no plans to replace the 4100OSE until late summer at the earliest....

Current forum price on this due to a recent price reduction from Marantz is now £330. I`ll try to get the forum offers updated this weekend....
