Where's the cheapest place to get Microsoft Office and can you get Microsoft Word on it's own?

If you're a student or have kids between 5 & 16 then a student licence version would be the cheapest.

Have a look at buy.com (don't forget the forum link and you may be able to use a voucher as well;)), jungle.com, dabs.com, action.com and also PC World who were advertising it at the weekend.

You can get Word on it's own, but would probably pay almost as much as a student version of Office.

Thanks for that and how do I 'exploit' the fact I have a 7 yr old?

It should tell you in the box, as all you get is an application form to send to Microsoft for the CD's, although when I bought mine (as a p/t student) this time last year, I filled out the application on-line (from the details in the box) and got the CD's a few days later.

I think in your case, it would need to be registered in your 7 year old's name as they're the student (but I'm not sure on this), and if you use the form it will need to be signed by the school.

You might also want to check what versions of Office are available on Student Licence - when I got mine (Office 2000 Premium), there were a couple of versions Pro (Word, Excel, Access) and Premium (Word, Excel, Access, Frontpage & Publisher), but I think MS changed it recently. Best to have a look on www.microsoft.com/uk
